Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo

The Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo Win32 client is now available, offering a sample of the next installment in Epic's multiplayer shooter series. The demo is a 209 MB download, available on 3D Gamers, Absolute Gamer's, ActionTrip, Adrenaline Vault, Boomtown (registration required), FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, IGN, Loadedinc, NVIDIA's nZone, UT2003Files, and Worthplaying. Here's word from an earlier story on this on the contents: "The Unreal Tournament 2004 official demo includes five playable game modes, and offers fans their first taste of Unreal Tournament 2004’s two new game modes: the introduction of the hyper-charged Onslaught mode and the return of the fan-favorite Assault mode, which last appeared in the original Unreal Tournament. The demo also features established gametypes like Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Bombing Run."

Don’t hold your breath, it’s not like any good mods came from the UT2003 engine. Apart from Red Orchestra if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah but noboby was giving away $1 million dollars for the best MOD for UT2003 either which is exactly what Nvidia is doing for UT2K4.

There will be MODS. Great ones.

Feedback sounds ok, but all I am really hearing is that UT2K4 is UT2K3 with vehicles and one new game mode. I can use UT2K3 Classic Mutator Mod to make it look and feel more like the original UT already. The MOD community made assault maps (and quite well) for UT2K3 because EPIC was to lazy to do so. So really the only new thing brought to the table is the Onslaught Mode and vehicles. This sounds like a $20 expansion to me but they are charging $40? Weren't they going to give existing UT2K3 customers a price break? And if so what was the cost offset? I can't remember to be honest.

Also, I have heard that the MODs that were created for UT2K3 WILL NOT work with UT2K4 because of network code??? Is this true? If so, I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for modders to waste their time making quality MODs for an engine that will screw them every year.

Sounds fun, but having to pay anything over $20 for an obvious expansion (or whoops, this should have been what UT2K3 was supposed to be) is a total rip-off.

Sounds like we need to start a "videocard for Wowbagger" fund...

Yep, after replacing the power supply, I still had the problem. I borrowed an old Voodoo card from a friend and swapped it for my card. Now Windows recognizes the card, so apparently my card was dead. So now I gotta get a new card Don't know how I ended up with such crappy karma? You'd think I go around kicking old ladies or something to earn such a punishment. Woe is Wowbagger...

My old bag of chips can actually run this at playable framerates! Athlon 1200, 512 MB PC133 RAM, Radeon 8500 64MB. Nothing oc'd. It runs smooth and it looks pretty darn good while doing it. That's at 800x600, but now I'm tempted to try 1024x768.

I'll have to dig into it tomorrow and see if I can still pop heads from the hip with the sniper rifle.

Great game! Only dissapointment is the "local" voice chat. In the previews, local Voice chat was supposed to allow your voice chat to come out of the player model's heads. You know, just like any other environmental sound effect. Instead we have a funky local range system of some sort, I believe. Guess it was too tough to code. But what we got is not bad, although the demo has severe sound volume problems from what I can tell. Very widespread. Eh i'm sure it will be fixed.

Definately buying this one. 100 maps! Yowza! And can't wait for full mods to start coming out.

Damnit, I wanted to skip this game, there's just too much coming out in march, but now that I read the comments...
Is it really that good that a FPS veteran who played everything since ipx-doom can get some fun out of it? Seriously, UT2K4 was the first major shooter I was going to skip....
Gotta try the demo tonight.
Sorry for the double-post.

Haha, getting 9 MB/s from that link.

Yahoo should host the HL2, Doom3 and DNF (if it ever comes out!) demos when they are released.

This really is a lot of fun...the CTF is certainly closer to what I remember from the original UT, the Assault is so much more fun with larger and more complex (not to mention prettier) maps, and Onslaught is a nice addition, especially with the vehicles. The sniper weapons are great, and don't have the camp-and-abuse tendencies from other *cough*CS*cough* games. It's pure fun, where teamwork is required and strategies are made up basically as you go along.

Framerates are a fairly steady 70+ with detail options set to defaults at 1024x768x32 4xAA/8xAF on an Athlon XP 2800+/Asus A7N8X/512MB Corsair/R9700 Pro.

On my P3-933/Ti4200 the games runs nicely at 1024x768 resolution with everything set to "normal", which surprised me, especially on the big onslaught map.

I loved UT and was a mild supporter of UT2003 but this is simply much better. For instance, just grab and shoot the mini-gun, to me it just feels right again.

This will be the second game I've ever pre-ordered.

Oh yeah... and isn't the cost of this game going to be less than the average game with the added bonus of getting even more off for buying ut2k3??? Man, this is awesome!

Well, EB has it on pre-order for $40 with a car decal.. there's even a Special Edition DVD version for the same price.

Edit: I don't know what kind of bonus there is if you already have UT2k3.. didn't check on that.

They need a new engine, simple as that. If we are lucky they will pick up HL2 engine for 2k5.

This statement is as clueless as it comes.

I heard that they were showing off an impressive build of 64 bit coded UT2004 last September. Any word on when users will get a chance to see ?

Microsoft has a free preview version of 64 bit Windows available for download (requires an Athlon64 or Opteron and is rumored to need polishing and better drivers and graphics support).

Well I just spend 6 and a half hours playing this. Let me start by saying that I'm 27, have a full time job that takes a lot of time, a loving wife that I like to give attentoin to and a baby on the way. I want a game that I can go on and get a quick fix, even if for only five minutes. Man, oh man, is it just what I've been looking for! Finally a game that gives me a buzz and put me on a high.. the last game to really do this was .. wait a minute, the first UT!!

Really, I played mostly Assault, although I initially tried them all (well, didn't get around to bombing run). This assault map is just awesome! I've been playing it for 4 hours straight! I didn't even want to stop to piss!!

In my honest opinion I love this game! This is exactly what I've been missing!!! And to think of how many more maps/characters/mods will be included when/after the game is released!!! Imagine being able to play all the maps of UT2k3 with these weapons and revised physics and look that just make the game feel awesome instead of being some glorified techfest about ragdoll physics (wasn't that all ut2k3 was)!

Technically my computer isn't the bomb. But this game ran so smooth and I encountered not one once of lag, although I did play mostly on the official servers.

Oh yeah... and isn't the cost of this game going to be less than the average game with the added bonus of getting even more off for buying ut2k3??? Man, this is awesome!
