Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo

The Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo Win32 client is now available, offering a sample of the next installment in Epic's multiplayer shooter series. The demo is a 209 MB download, available on 3D Gamers, Absolute Gamer's, ActionTrip, Adrenaline Vault, Boomtown (registration required), FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, IGN, Loadedinc, NVIDIA's nZone, UT2003Files, and Worthplaying. Here's word from an earlier story on this on the contents: "The Unreal Tournament 2004 official demo includes five playable game modes, and offers fans their first taste of Unreal Tournament 2004’s two new game modes: the introduction of the hyper-charged Onslaught mode and the return of the fan-favorite Assault mode, which last appeared in the original Unreal Tournament. The demo also features established gametypes like Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Bombing Run."

Ah, yes - Operation Flashpoint. Great game, but wonder if it turned some people off by being a little too realistic. Loved the editor in that game too. Hope they continue the OpFlash line.

not that I'm going to dl it, but is the rocket launcher still castrated down to 3 rockets at once in alt fire?

You pansy! "WAAAAAH, I need 5 rockets to kill someone because I suck at FPS's!" You wouldn't have lasted 60 seconds back in the Quake days.

UT2003 was not that different from UT, really. The major difference was that UT2003 added the double jump feature, apart from that: a slightly faster game feel and some adjustments to the weapons.

In my opinion, UT2003 was better than UT. And the reason why people don't like it I believe has to do with the fact that it is slightly more difficult - harder to hit, and less weapon impact.

Also: in my opinion the changes in UT2003 have little to do with Quake gameplay (particularly as concerns the physics, which remain superior in Q3) The reference to Quake only indicate a lack of references: if it is not like UT, well it has to be more like Quake... what else...?

2 hours to go for me...

They will need to release a improved demo if they want my hard-earned money, this thing is a mess.

Well, this is a 'Beta' demo.. so they may come out with a regular demo later. Hopefully they'll work on the lag and other bugs before then. I think it's good to have this demo so they can get feedback from the players on what needs to be fixed.. if they listen.

Disclaimer: my favorite online games are BF:1942, Call of Duty, Counterstrike, DOD, and Tribes 1 & 2. Never really got into the Quake/UT2k3 stuff for some reason...

I never really got into CS, DOD, or the like. I played BF:1942 pretty actively for awhile. Shame of it all is, another lesser known game is far superior to any of these titles and is plenty more fun; the game is called Operation Flashpoint.

But blah, hope this game turns out somewhat better than the last jaunt.

It is by far the best demo, or game, I've played in a long time. The Onslaught mode rocks with the vehicles. Assault is cool as hell with that convoy trucks map. All of the weapons are redone or entirely new. They did a great job. Even the bots are great.
If only it came out 2 years ago.

Anyway, I think I'll definitely buy this.

Not to step on any toes - I liked it! Thought the vehicles were pretty fun and overall feel is great. Will have to play a lot more before I really get a final opinion, but if it were out right now, I'd buy it.

Reading the previous comments, how was UT2k3 different than the original UT? My brain doesn't go back that far...

I also can no longer play. Apparently the master server doesn't like my cd-key.

While frustrating, this is good because I must... get... work... done... I'm sure they'll figure it out in a day or two.

In the 30 minutes I got to play it, this game looks and plays incredibly! I mean it is freeking awesome! Great job Epic, I'm finally looking forward to a FPS again!

Agreed. This one is much better than 2k3. I think people will like this game a lot more. I can't wait until we get some dedicated servers. Instant action is ok, but I'd like some true action!

McCrank, unless you're bot matching it probably has to do with the lack of good dedicated servers right now.

uber muppet,

'Twas not my intention to misguide anyone. I was merely giving my honest first impressions from playing two gametypes via Instant Action (not online).

I played UT an insane amount back in its heyday. When 2K3 was announced, I was pretty jazzed, so much so that I bought it against my better judgment. By that, I mean that I played the demo, thought it felt like Q3, but hoped that the retail version was tweakable enough to make it feel like the UT that I enjoyed immensely. Sadly, this was not the case, and most of my UT friends agreed. All of our 2K3 CDs are collecting dust somewhere...

But w/2K4, I didn't get the same feeling as w/2K3. I can honestly say that I will be picking this game up - DVD version, of course! W/the little bit of time I've spent on the demo, I've even gone so far as to post my impressions on various sites, and I've never posted anything before in my life! (You'll notice that my account is brand-new...) Hopefully, Assault will catch on, since that is my favorite gametype (after DM).

So if you did not enjoy the 2K4 demo, that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But as other posters (and other sites) have pointed out, many who enjoyed UT but not 2K3 are actually surprised to dig 2K4. (Initially, that is...)

DOHkes don't misguide ppl.

UT2004 plays exactly like UT2003 and is nothing like UT. Epic will never be able to make a new UT game that has the feel and popularity as UT.

Now before all you kids go on about "IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE UT" You are damn right, and I never said so.

UT2003 is just crap compared to UT if you ask the hardcore UT fanbase, it's as simple as that.
