Valve Speaks Part One on HalfLife2.Net (thanks Tiscali Games) has loads of details on plans for Half-Life 2, constructed from the replies from Valve to various emails about the upcoming shooter sequel. Respondents include Yahn Bernier, Mike Gummelt, Ken Birdwell, while a majority of the questions are addressed by head honcho Gabe Newell. They discuss various concerns about the upcoming game, including questions generated by a frame-by-frame analysis of the E3 videos.

He kind of looks like an older, more bureacratic type Ray Liotta.

Ray Liotta did FANTASTIC voicework for Vice City, so we can only hope

Thanks for the heads up Gandhi, I'll look into those logitech wireless mice and keyboards. *scowls at wires running all over his desk*

It almost makes me wonder just whom the inspiration for the G-Man was for the second game. He kind of looks like an older, more bureacratic type Ray Liotta.

Gandhi, I noticed that you are using a wireless keyboard and mouse combo. Doesn't the slight delay you have drive you freaking crazy when you play FPS games?

Actually no. I specifically researched the polling rate on wireless mice before I made the purchase. The Logitech MX700 mouse has the same poll rate as a wired USB 1.1 mouse. There is no lag except for the split second upon FIRST use when the mouse "wakes up" from its sleep mode. So there is a split second lag upon computer startup when I first try to do something on my desktop, after that it works just like a regular mouse.

The best thing I like about the combo are the shortcut keys on the keyboard. Addicted to them to the point of going into withdrawal while at work using my laptop

Edit - here is a review talking about mouse polling"

Yawn, more Half Life 2 "news".

When I use a wireless setup, it always seems like there is like a 0.1 second delay on my motions or something. Kinda like Ex Deus : IW with it's fucked up mouselag setting. I go completely nuts trying to play an FPS with it.

Does that just not bother you, or don't you have that problem?

I'd love to go wireless if I could do so without that damned lag I always seem to get...

"A few DirectX-only games get ported to the Mac too, that is, they have to port it to OpenGL in the process. Like they did with Halo."

The biggest reason they did that is because Bungie used to be a Mac heavy studio.

It's becoming less and less likely for DX* games to get ported to OpenGL, especially if they are associated with MS in anyway (Look at Gabe's resume.)

That said, DX has come a long way. I still prefer OpenGL in most games, but that might be because I'm still running a GeForce3 :/

Well, that's the exception on DX games, not the rule. If Halo wasn't from Bungie, a long-time Mac advocate, I sincerely doubt they would have bothered. Valve didn't port HL1 to OGL for the Mac and I haven't seen anything to suggest Valve is going to waste time with re-engineering HL2 for the Mac, either.

That's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

Welcome. Actually, this is my first ever self-built system, and the whole process could not have been any easier. The only issue I had was a noisey powersupply that I had to spend some time troubleshooting (kept suspecting other components were making the noise).

As for when to take the plunge, you my want to wait for AMD to release the socket-939 version of the A64, which should be in about a month or so. The 939 has dual memory channels, as opposed to the socket 740 with only one memory channel.

Chris -

Been running A63 3200+ system since mid/late October of last year. Rock solid, no issues or any kind, and blazing fast (well, compared to my old 700 MHz P3 laptop, just about anything would be blazing fast).

Thank's Gandhi. That's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I think the A64 will be my next PC. I just don't know if it's worth making the plunge right now, with my P4 2.4 and all.

If HL-2 or Unreal 2004 don't run as fast as I'd like, I'll probably spend the dough.

Half Life 2 @ E3? Feb 11, 2004, 13:56
Feb 11, 2004, 13:56

I'm really curious to see what, if anything, they present at E3. Whenever a company puts a lot into their E3 demo it means they are not very close to release. In fact it's almost always meant that september is a best case scenario. The original half-life did not even get displayed at E3 right before it's release. Wasn't it released in june?

The Multiplayer side of this is going to be interesting. The environment they are creating is so interactive that long battles may end up vastly changing the environment. Ppl joining mid game may have a long sync time before they see things in their current condition. More likely online play will have very limited terrain changes...

Yuzzem, don't bother upgrading from a 9700 Pro to a 9800XT, it wouldn't be a big enough jump to justify 500 bucks (or even 400 if/when the price drops, though if you look hard enough, you could get it for about 435...but I digress).

Just wait for the next 2 generations...and by then, the next gen (higher than 9800XT) will be fairly cheap. But who knows how long that will take.

The advantage of the higher end ATI cards in my experience is the ability to run FSAA and Ansio at much higher levels than the lower cards without as significant frame rate hit. <<<<<<

Thats True- But won't u get more FPS out of it if u have a faster CPU working with a faster Video Card? How much DIfference would I get going from a 9700 Pro to an 9800XT?

My theory? Just like all delays of major games, this one will be forgotten a month after release (regardless if the game is any good).

You are partially correct. People will forget about the delays as soon as they complete the first level, then they'll start whining about when the first patch is gonna come out.
