Out of the Blue

Thanks for the grinder recommendations.... in looking over what folks sent along, clearly most people are using the chopper type, rather than true grinders. Funny thing is, I'm sure I read somewhere a long time ago that true grinding is preferable, but now I can't recall for the life of me what the reason for that would be... I'm guessing it has something to do with the bouquet or something like that (doesn't it always?), but I'm thinking that if I can't taste the difference in the coffee, I shouldn't be worried about how the beans are chopped (especially since it's so much more convenient this way).

With Burr grinders your coffee beans more evenly ground. With choppers, some ends up powder, some ends up kinda big pieces.

Burr grinders are usually able to make a finer grind. This is very important for espresso and turkish coffee. Not so important for drip.

Burr grinders create less heat in the beans when grinding, resulting in less chemical change in the coffee beans. Some people claim this results in better flavor.

Burr grinders cost at least $50-$75 for a cheap one. A perfectly good krups blade grinder costs $20.
