WoW Beta Signups Wednesday

The Blizzard Entertainment Website (thanks Worldofwar.net) has word that sign-ups to beta test World of WarCraft, their upcoming MMORPG, will begin on Wednesday:
At 6:00 pm PST on Wednesday, January 28th, the signup period for the World of Warcraft Beta Test will officially begin. We will provide a link to the beta-test application right here in the news section at that time. Testers are not going to be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, so you will be able to submit an application and receive equal consideration anytime during the signup period, which will end on Wednesday, February 4th at 6:00 pm PST. Please note that multiple submissions from the same household will result in complete disqualification.

For this initial phase of the World of Warcraft beta test, we will only be able to accept applications from Canada, Korea, and the US. The test for Europe and other countries around the world will happen later this year. Please do not contact us for further information regarding the beta test; we will be posting an FAQ in the days ahead.

I work with a guy who is saving up his vacation days in anticipation of playing this game.

I find this rather frightening, myself.

What they oughta do is auction off beta test slots. Sure, it'd get a lot of people mad, but they'd make a bundle.

On another note, I wonder how many people make dupe applications and other evil tricks.

I used vacation time on Horizons.

Lol.. what a waste that was. I want that time back.

Don't use personal time on a MMOG just to be the first.. it's never worth it. 6 months later one week will mean nothing at all.

I am yet to find a MMORPG I like and I have tried a lot. I guess that makes no sense, but sometimes when you have a few hours to kill, it sounds like a good idea. The repetition involved to simply level up is absurd. Its typically countless hours of pressing the same mouse or key buttons. I do want to try WOW because I am a fan of the Warcraft series and signed up for City Of Heroes hoping that will be different. Both the early previews seem to say these 2 will be, but heard that before. If there was more to do ingame, perhaps 10-20 side quests or things to do per level to break up the repitition while earning experience, that would make these types of game more enjoyable. But, to those who love these things, its like crack.

Like I said, I play some, but dont follow them all religously and know very little about it. My interest is more being based on the Warcraft series. Was not aware knowing all details of a game was a requirement to post about it

I don't normally complain about graphics, but I wish Blizzard would stop making their engines to run on PII 200 Mhz machines. They have amazing artists, I'd like to see what they can do with a high-res engine.

Other than that, WarCraft + Diablo = Wee. "Joo want axe?"

I have a feeling that the chances of getting into this beta test are closer to 0% than 1%. If I do get selected though, I'll be sure to tell everyone here at Blues News.. as well as my friends and family and my classmates and anyone I happen to see walking down the street. I just hope they need a large test group of hardcore gamers from Chico, CA.

Anyone get selected for a beta from another Blizzard title? I assume they are looking for a wide range of player types, from different locations and with different connection speeds. Do they pick from any of these groups descriminately?

Also.. are there any guilds in place as of yet? I'd like to find one (the sooner the better :)).

I believe PlanetWarcraft has started a guild. I have never been selected for a Blizzard beta although I have tested for numerouse other games. I suspect that WoW will have a larger tester pool than previous games simply because MMOs require more players. Anyway I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get in, WoW has the potential to be an MMO that is actually worth playing and paying for.

.. WTF were the marketing people at Quiznos thinking? They have two mutated rats as their subshop's mascots? That has got to be the stupidist advertisement anyone could have come up with.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Marketing Executive, "Hey, I got an idea. How about two mutated rats... you know deformed looking freaks. But one is kinda artsy and he plays a guitar..."

CEO Bonehead, "Wow, now that is a brilliant idea. Because when I think of a good sub... I think of rats. Now I remember why we pay you so much and why I pay myself so much, we are pure genius"

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
As far as WOW? I was excited about a year ago. But it seems the graphics were scaled way back. And are just not as good as the early shots. But then it always comes down to game play. Right? So we shall see...

Once WoW is released, any company thinking about releasing an MMORPG is going to have to give it some real thinking on what they can't do.

#1. Release a product without massive amounts of content.
#2. Release a product that isn't thoroughly balanced.
#3. Release a product that includes the usual exp grind.

THAT'S TOO FUNNY! That Rat on the left has some friggin messed up eyeballs. I've always thought that half of the entertainment industry is on some mind altering drugs. Maybe they're promoting their new "All Grey Meat Sub".

Okay I am going to puke now and brush my teeth with Clorox and burn anything I touched since reading that post.... sick :).

On to WOW, I only played one MMORG and that was Everquest. I have bought every blizzard game but Diablo 2, and I am really tempted to buy this one. There are some really cool features like "instancing of dungeons" so each group gets their own "instance" of a dungeon, that is REALLY nice. Dungeons seem more like a tavern than an isolated, dangerouse place in most MMORPG because its so crowded. Some dungeons are for just you and your group now that is a nice feature. This game has alot of positives and I honestly think this is the perfect game for Blizzard to make. But it better get A+++++ friggin' reviews before I drop $55 on the game and then $10 - $15 on a monthly fee... I be po'.

"If there was more to do ingame, perhaps 10-20 side quests or things to do per level to break up the repitition while earning experience, that would make these types of game more enjoyable."

10-20? Try 1,400, according to the latest Gamespy preview Considering that Blizzard is looking at not only making quests the #1 place to get XP, but also providing XP for exploring new areas in addition to just killing stuff, I'm hoping the level grind will finally be defeated. Here's hoping.

As for the beta, Blizzard has said that there going to do the testing in waves. From the pool that signsup in the coming week, they'll maybe choose, I dunno, a thousand to play for a month or two, then double the number, then add some more, ETC. ETC.

As the game itself gets essentially finished, they'll need to have a SUPER large stress test to see if their servers can take the stress of a !@#$-ton of players. I dunno if the stress test will be open, by I'm guessing you'll have a decent chance of getting in. Of course, Blizzard tends to do things their own way, so I might be way off.
