Dogpile on GTA

Lieberman Denounces 'Grand Theft Auto' Video Game (thanks HomeLAN Fed) offers quotes from the presidential hopeful decrying the violence in GTA (presumably meaning the most recent sequel) as "horrendous," referring to the bad example it sets for the "next generation," in apparent disregard for the game's Mature 17+ rating.

I was playing VC last week and after seeing an ambulance tend to a downed victim, the paramedics got back in the rescue and as the rescue sped off it ran over 2 pedestrians. Funny how other pedestrians don't take notice of the piles of money left behind by such incidents.

"The stuff we see on the news- on an almost daily basis- is far more disturbing (even though they don't show gore- not that I'd want them to) than some cartoonish video game."

Exactly, I remember watching General Swartzcough (-sp) do his updates about Operation: Desert Storm back in the 90's and him and the 'news press' would chuckle as they watched guided missiles blow up caravans of Iraqi soldiers in Transport trucks. They would show the missle falling then he (the general) would say "Boom!" as it landed and everyone would laugh and cheer as it happened, and this is to real life people, not a video game. Yes, they were the 'enemy' during this conflict but they were all basically forced to fight or they (their families) would be punished. So they gov't shouldn't even be going here as they depict violence so readily (and happily) in real life.

Lieberman really needs to use the restroom...

coz he's so full of shit.
Liebermann has been on the anti-violent videogame bandwagon (and censorship in general) since it begun. This is really nothing new from what he's been saying for the last ~10 years about video games, music, movies, and television.

Don't play them.

Yes I agree they shouldn't be sold to minors, but minors will find a way to get them anyway, just as middle-school kids find a way to buy cigarettes.

How many R-rated movies depict violence? There's not much being said about them in the media or by politicians.

If you want to shield everyone from graphic depictions of violence then we should ban the news. The stuff we see on the news- on an almost daily basis- is far more disturbing (even though they don't show gore- not that I'd want them to) than some cartoonish video game.

well more importantly - he's not going to win. Even if the Democrats take back the White House, he's not going to be the guy. I's going to be Dean, Edwards or Kerry. Ergo, he's just another stuffed shirt trying to get some attention.

Plus, remember Lieberman is the guy who headed up those senate hearings in the early 1990's. However, we had Tipper Gore's husband in the White House for eight years and music censorship didn't become a huge deal, so I don't care what Lieberman says right now - it won't make a difference.

It is hilarious, though, that GTA3/GTA:VC were released years ago, but they don't make a big stink until an election year. Remember that.

Fact is this is the only way he will get any votes... He has no support on any other issue.

from this side of the pond I thought that Clinton was a joke 'it all depends on what the definition of is is', and he seems to have been followed by a bigger joke from the other side of the political spectrum. I guess my question is if no-one takes them seriously who elects them to positions of real power?

Well said, Anvil. I'd be even more forceful in my reply, but I turned 30 today, and I must now go yell at kids from my porch rocking chair and tell them I'm keeping their football, consarnit.

He said "The player is rewarded for attacking a woman, pushing her to the ground, kicking her repeatedly and then ultimately killing her, shooting her over and over again."

Where's the reward for that in GTA/VC? I never got that one. I feel cheated that I never found that reward in the game. Other than a slight chuckle at hearing people bitch about getting dragged out of their cars I don't recall any big reward for shooting pedestrians.
