Third-Person Thief III

The Game That Pioneered Stealth in Gaming Reemerges in Eidos and Ion Storm's Thief: Deadly Shadows is the press release announcing the addition of a third-person perspective option in the upcoming installment in the stealthy Thief series. The announcement is accompanied by a few screenshots showing off the new point of view. Here's a bit:
In Thief: Deadly Shadows, gamers will be able to play in either third person or first person perspectives, and shift seamlessly between each on the fly. The new third person perspective will further immerse players into the role of Garret [sic] -- the master Thief. Sneaking through darkly lit environments, stealing riches and ambushing unwary targets in third person presents a new, visceral gaming experience to the Thief franchise. Still, the tension fuelled gameplay in classic Thief first person view is there for returning fans of the series and newcomers alike. Ion Storm's trademark dynamic lighting and shadow technology manifests in Thief: Deadly Shadows new levels of depth and tension to the game's environments. Characters and objects cast real shadows that effect stealth gameplay, requiring the player to manipulate darkness and light to create your own shadows to hide in.

"darkly lit"

nice oxymoron. they are so stupid they can't even make proper use of the english language and judgeing from the quality of the textures in those screenshots it seems they can't make use of the unreal engine any better.

On the other hand, use of negative lighting (use a 3d package and you'll know) will inform you that is a perfectly legitemate phrase.

"darkly lit" is an appropriate phrase in a HUGE number of artistic applications.. try spreading your mind past your own little world once and a while

looks like Thief 3 feels alot of pressure from the Prince... so much that it had to CONFORM CONFORM CONFORM to what all the little kiddies want their action adventure games to look like

OK, that does it. I am not going to buy this untill the reviews all come in. I was eagerly awaiting this, but from the press release, it sounds like the 3rd person view is the default "first person view is there" that certianly sounds like it is an option to me.
I fail to see how a shift to 3rd person, where you see another body, will "further immerse players into the role of Garrett" than a 1st person perspective where you actually ARE Garrett.

Oh boy. Adding the 3rd person view is VERY obviously a console decision. This does not bode well. This game had better be every bit as good as the first two.

Darkly lit is perfectly alright.

I have little hope for this game. Of course, I found myself bored in Thief 2, so my opinion isn't all that useful.

I'd also like to point out that, outside of racing games, I don't think a single game has effectively used both perspectives. Games are tailored to one or the other.

Much like no game has effectively been both RT and TB.

While a third person viewpoint could be useful for any number of reasons, it just seems to be "Dammit, Splinter Cell is selling like teh shit, let's make our game more like Splinter Cell!" to me.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean bad things.

The bad things come when you look at those screenshots. The same bland low-res texture crap we found in Ex Deus : IW and apparently the color BROWN is deemed "shit hot" by Ion Storm these days?

My hopes and expectations continue to sink lower. Which is probably good, because if they sink just a little lower still, nothing Ion Storm does can depress me any more.

Edit : I don't think a single game has effectively used both perspectives

Hmmm, I thought the Jedi Knight series did quite alright with it, to be honest.

Morrowind handled both perspectives pretty well.

I really think this could be a bad thing though. If this ends up the way I think it might then Ion Storm will have lost ALL my respect. I don't like to see my favourite sequels screwed up. Deus Ex 2 anyone?

i see a lot of people here saying "After DX:IW, i'm not going to trust anything from these guys!" i was upset with deus ex as well, but i think the thief series is a lot less complex than DX hence there's less room to fuck up. granted, those screens don't look so hot so if one of your big complaints about DX was the graphics, then maybe there's still cause for alarm. however, most people seem to think the "dumbing down" of the game was it's biggest offense and i don't think there's a lot dumbing down needed for this game even when porting it over to our "lesser" console brethren.

just something to think about... and argue about

I can't say I was too impressed with those screenshots, they don't look so cool - all washed out and don't seem to have any definition.

So I threw them into PSP, turned the gamma down to 0.80, and voila, it looks cool and scary and haunting and dramatic and Thief-ey! They still need more contrast though... the flames are nice, but more pure white might help balance out the darkness (what little is left, it seems).

Adding the 3rd person view is VERY obviously a console decision.

That, and the name. Notice they call it Thief: Deadly Shadows, and not Thief 3. Just like they called it Deus Ex: Invisible War, and not Deus Ex 2. Don't want the console cronies getting all confused.

The game is so obviously being made for xbox.

It's unfortunate that this game was developed for a console crowd, its true fans all use pc's.
