Far Cry SP Demo

The single-player demo for Far Cry is now available, released a little earlier than originally planned because it was prematurely leaked. The demo is a staggering download, available at 465 MB with the DirectX installer removed on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, Pixelrage, and Doupe.cz; while the 496 MB version with DX9 included is on 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, AusGamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, Happy Puppy (registration required), IGN, Loadedinc, and Worthplaying. Word from Ubisoft on this is: "The single-player demo offers an action-packed glimpse into the Far Cry world showcasing all the technically-advanced gameplay and jaw-dropping scenes from the full version of the game. Featuring a huge beach-laden level, the demo proudly showcases Far Cry's critically-acclaimed CryENGINE, huge game environments, deadly A.I., and the longest view-distance ever witnessed in a first-person shooter."

You're tossing rocks, not grenades. Hit "H" to cycle through grenade types (smoke, frag, rock). Rocks are for distraction.

I played around with it briefly at both easy and medium difficulty levels. The AI is good if the mercs and I are on the same level - they flank and work together. But if I am on a different level from them - for example I am above them, or they have to climb down stairs to get to me - then the mercs become a bunch of idiots that I can easily pick off one by one.

Level size is huge - I can definitely see the potential in multiplayer, especially if boats, buggys and helis can be used. Graphics are pretty.

But did not Half Life 2 promise long draw distance and large maps? Of course no one has heard a peep from Valve in months, so who knows. Wonder if they will even go to E3 ....

Overall, I will agree with what someone else said - Far Cry is good, but nothing earth-shattering. I think everyone is so starved for a good FPS right now, that anything released now that is moderately well done will seem like the second coming of Christ.

And I played the demo on a AIW 9800 Pro using the Cat 4.1s, and not a single issue. I just set the video settings to Auto and played at 1024X768X32.

Wow, sarcastic.

Anyway, I can see myself agreeing with "Mopap." I played the game on medium and, although the AI does have some different moves, it is still fairly easy to break. This was most noticeable when utilizing different levels of height (being above or below and item and the AI) or the bushes.

The game is very much one of "Headshots R' Us" if you do not just rush through it like a madman.

Wanting Serious Sam 2 already,

Motivate yourself to start in a mode other than Easy. You know this game needs to be playable for other "non-grumpy" kids as well...

They seem to have some nice floppy dead body physics too. I shot a guy in a boat, commandeered it and was driving it forward while looking backwards at the dead body behind me. Pretty nice. Couple moment in the game where physics seems to look the other way though, when dealing with enemies. Oh, and for some reason my grenades seem to be mostly duds. They clunk out there, and slink off into the great unknown rather than make any sort of spectacle of themselves.

I loaded up the game, took the boat ashore, got out, got shot. Ok. I start again, drive the boat to the wooden walkway, get out and run underneath the walkway. A guy comes down to the beach, looks at me, then turns around to face the ocean. I shoot him in the back of the head. Two guys run down under the walkway with me, kinda run around in circles, I shoot them both. I come out from under cover, onto the walkway, an enemy runs at me shooting and missing, then turns around, runs and hides behind some boxes, then comes out at me again, shooting and missing, then runs off again, hides behind more boxes. His head starts popping up and down over the top of the box pile (faster than is humanly possible), I watch this for a minute then blow his skull top off.

At this point I was stoopid enough to stick my knife into the generator (hint: don't do this).

I wasn't motivated to restart.

And could this guy move any slower this side of a master chief?

Looks nice tho.

to be honest i'm having trouble seeing what all the fuss is about aswell. granted, the cryengine is spectacular, but the game itself isn't that special imo. I've never been that bothered about driving vehicles in games and although 'cool' for a minute or 2, driving the buggy around isn't exactly loads of fun. i could get a driving game for that.
The sense of scale is unsurpassed thanks to the engine but all the game is is a big island with a few bad guys littered around it. They seems to be able to see u from a mile off so in order to be stealthy you have to crawl around at a snail's pace and, given the amount of ground u have to cover, this gets boring.
The set piece with the helicopters and marine drops is quite cool but this was done in half-life years ago and isn't exactly new.
As for the AI, it's ok most of the time but i haven't seen the enemies do stuff i haven't seen before. Sure, they flank and even approach some form of teamwork but for the most part how intelligent do the bots/enemies need to be if they're just scattered around in one huge open area?
Don't get me wrong, I like the game and will look forward to the retail release. I just can't see why everyone is raving about it so much. I've played through the scenario a few times now and think I've seen pretty much all there is to see in the demo, but apart from a nice engine it doesn't seem to be much better than games such as igi2 or codename outbreak (couple of games it reminds me of). So, as I'm clearly in the minority here, what am I missing?

Yeah, no doubt :). The makers of Far Cry should use this in thier advertisements... "133 out of 138 poeple loved Far Cry on Blues News".

Really though, I do use this forum to gage games as most people here know what they are talking about. I am totally shocked as to how postive so many people are of this game here on Blue's. Can't wait to try this demo "Arrrhhhh" (Howard Dean Scream).

I didn't see any buggy or tank, but I did see a downed zero in the jungle... that was cool.

How can you miss the buggy if you have been at the rusted tank? It should be right beside it

I've read a few other people saying they couldn't find it either even when they were standing near the tank. If they see you coming one of the NPC's will say "I'll go get some help" and will hop in the jeep and take off, that may be whats happening. If you can get to the point between the two sets of shore patrols then sneak through the brush so they aren't alerted you should be able take them out and steal the jeep.

HalfElf... I think there is a bug that on low spec it isn't visible. Or at least I read that somewhere. Try with everything on medium and see if that helps.

I like the fact you can use the binoculars to "hear" objects far away (some kind of built in sound gun?). Although they get repetitive, the dialogue between the guards is hilarious.

Anyone notice the two guards fishing and talking about what kind of bait to use? Nice touch.

Some kind of bug allowed me to keep all my weapons after playing through it once. I used the sniper rifle to shoot out the radio on the small island. That patrol boat wasn't sent out and the guys on the shore weren't alerted. Nice touch again.

Yes, I'd agree with a lot of the posts: this isn't the "second coming" game, but it does some things very very well. I'm looking forward to checking out the full version.

#129, you got latest drivers installed? Also check your video card settings when you right click desktop and go to properties, settings, advanced, all those things. Adjust your performance and quality sliders, see if that helps. I also have my refresh rate at as high as possible, I dunno if that helps performance wise though at 60hz, C&C Generals ran like arse at anything higher than 800by600, at 75hz I was able to go up to 1152 by 864 with no lag. That also depends on your monitor/video card. Cheers.
