Far Cry SP Demo

The single-player demo for Far Cry is now available, released a little earlier than originally planned because it was prematurely leaked. The demo is a staggering download, available at 465 MB with the DirectX installer removed on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, Pixelrage, and Doupe.cz; while the 496 MB version with DX9 included is on 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, AusGamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, Happy Puppy (registration required), IGN, Loadedinc, and Worthplaying. Word from Ubisoft on this is: "The single-player demo offers an action-packed glimpse into the Far Cry world showcasing all the technically-advanced gameplay and jaw-dropping scenes from the full version of the game. Featuring a huge beach-laden level, the demo proudly showcases Far Cry's critically-acclaimed CryENGINE, huge game environments, deadly A.I., and the longest view-distance ever witnessed in a first-person shooter."

Catalyst 3.9 and up? Jan 21, 2004, 19:32
Jan 21, 2004, 19:32

I don't know what the deal is about FC requiring Catalyst 3.9 drivers or higher, I'm using the 3.7's on a 9800 Pro under win98 and the game looks fine.
I haven't noticed any artifacts whatsoever so far and I'm quite a way in (the siege at the top of the mountain).

Perhaps the MP beta code is different than the demo code, as it is NOT true that the demo works fine with Catalyst 3.9 or up, only with 3.9. Screenshots of the problem are in this thread

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_farcry_general&id=zzfoa

Does anyone have settings that overcome this problem with post-3.9 drivers?

... I thought the demo was excellent. Kinda made me think of Operation Flashpoint (interactivity) meets Halo (A.I.) meets No one Lives Forever (Merc banter) meets Half-Life (over all coolness factor). Bravo! I say! Bravo!

I think UbiSoft may have *yet another* winner on their hands. Talk about making the rest of the industry look like punks...

Strange bug? Jan 21, 2004, 19:03
Jan 21, 2004, 19:03

*** Spoiler Warning ***

This is odd, and could possibly be the developers intention, though I hope not.

I played the demo a second time around, this time avoiding the direct path (from where you start the demo) and circling around to the small bay to the right. I go up the path, intending to sneak up on all the mercenaries from behind to take them out by suprise. When I show up, they're all dead, lying there on the ground. While the guards on the first little island thingy are perfectly fine and oblivious to the mass suicide their buddies had just committed (almost in front of their eyes).

Strange, huh?

So, is this a bug?

oh, and its repeatable...

It autosaves at set points.

I got shadow artifacts with the 4.01's, which I don't get with the multi beta. I got rid of them by turning lighting to low.

"May be you should upgrade to the 4.1."

Apparently the same problem occurs with 4.1. The game REQUIRES 3.9, no more and no less.

I can attest to that, I'm getting some mean artifacting and corruption with the new 4.1's. Rolling back now...

...for those getting general slowdowns, set the "texture filter" quality to "low". It swaps Trilinear to Bilinear. There seems to be very little difference in visuals as long as everything else is set on high. Performance seems much better.

With levels this big, not being able to save anywhere is a huge turn-off.

I played Chrome pretty far in before I got bored with it. I see myself getting bored with this too, especially if I spend a lot of time planning an assault and then make a dumb mistake.

No save is a deal-breaker for me. You'd think anyone who's played an fps knows this. It usually means the devs are trying to artificially make the game longer...

looking through one of the config files shows that..er... you can bring down the console using the famous console key, then type in \r_displayinfo 1 and get to see your exciting fps.

4.1 running the MP beta fine for me. Followng the threads on the beta forum, some people have problems with them, but apparently most dont. Ditto for 3.10, and the Omega/DNA/whatever variations. The game requires 3.9, and up.

alt.binaries.games
alt.binaries.cdimage
etc.. you get the idea. It's not hard to find.

Actually from what I can tell neither of the newsgroups you listed has the demo. I have blazing fast news access, and would love to find a group to get it that way.

Anyone have confirmation of a newsgroup having the file ?

Thanks, Brian

Mine is not chopping. I run at all highest or all lowest settings. There is no difference in performance. Other than lower settings takes away terrain detail stuff. Highest settings actaully runs best for me. 1024x768x32. My findings start in the options menus areas. If I move my mouse cursor around, it literally chokes at intervals. The game does this as well. Like it is having trouble loading at a certain point, then bam the load occurs, and all is smooth. It keeps doing this tho. Damn odd. As the beta leak performed way better on all highest settings.
Funny how if I turn the details lower, I don`t get any performance enhancement.

Runs great (albeit at 800x600). Looks great, demo was pretty fun, but I think that the multiplayer will be very interesting, especially how wide open the level was.

For those getting choppy performance and for these getting smooth performance - what resolution are you running the game?

Ok heres a quick run. I already said how great this game rocks in a post a lot below.
Goods: Very large enviroment, you feel free. Graphics take advantage of next gen hardware which means it looks great on my Geforce 4, though will look and run better on a Geforce FX or better Radeon. The land is really detailed with grass, tress, shrubs, rocks, and lots of foilage to take cover behind. All of this together gives you one hell of an impressive looking game that will get anyone's attention that walks by your monitor. The draw distance is incredible. I was at the top of the mountain and able to look down and it's breathtaking. You can see so much it felt like your really high up there. Character models are all very slick and nice. I believe the word we use for that is bump mapping. Very impressive stuff that you can't put down considering the size of the enviroment. It definitely gets the job done without sacrificing much in FPS.
The Ai is very realistic though we still haven't gotten to near human like Ai. They will run for cover and call for backup though some are still dumb bricks. They will just stand and fire at you in the open or whatnot. Though the Ai has more goods than cons since you usually see more impressive things done in this demo than entire other games. One of the most noteable was my friend had a bunch of guys alerted in the beginning area which had drawn a soldier on a patrol boat to make it's way towards the area although he had already moved up through the level. It was pretty real watching the enemy go to that location even though he had already left it. He then sniped the guy in the head causing him to fall off the boat and into the water.
The physics are incredible. Aside from barrels and crates able to fall over and roll, the bodies are pretty realistic when they die. Most games with ragdoll affects are pretty lame and you might actually prefer animated deaths that would be cooler than the ragdoll effect. Luckily this game has some very realistic deaths even with the physics. I shot a guy in this underground tunneling area and he fell back only to sit down perfectly. Was pretty funny seeing a bullet hole right in his forehead while he layed with his head hunched over sitting down.
Cons: Somewhat choppy performance, have a nice rig, that's all I can say. I know it's because of my video card which I will upgrade as soon as HL2 or D3 hits though not until then. Ai has some quirks though not so bad. Overall it's great.
Definite Buy.
