Far Cry SP Demo

The single-player demo for Far Cry is now available, released a little earlier than originally planned because it was prematurely leaked. The demo is a staggering download, available at 465 MB with the DirectX installer removed on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, Pixelrage, and Doupe.cz; while the 496 MB version with DX9 included is on 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, AusGamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, Happy Puppy (registration required), IGN, Loadedinc, and Worthplaying. Word from Ubisoft on this is: "The single-player demo offers an action-packed glimpse into the Far Cry world showcasing all the technically-advanced gameplay and jaw-dropping scenes from the full version of the game. Featuring a huge beach-laden level, the demo proudly showcases Far Cry's critically-acclaimed CryENGINE, huge game environments, deadly A.I., and the longest view-distance ever witnessed in a first-person shooter."

Unreal was great for it's time. I thought graphically it left Quake 2 in the dust IMO.

That's not true. The average human eye can detect around 80fps and I'm sure with enough time playing games most can see 100.

All those studies that say 25-30fps have been proven wrong. If it were that low, then no one would ever need 400fps in Q3 rather than 30. The difference between 30 and 100 is MUCH more noticable than 100 and 400 though.

I was definitely suprised by how well it ran on my computer. On Very High @ 10x7 it ran well enough to look and move around fluidly (no AA/AF) but got a bit choppy when firing. With 4xAA/8xAF and Very High it was around 3-5 FPS but when I went down to 8x6 everything got playable again and it was almost as beautiful. Right now I'm using 10x7 with no AA/AF and High settings and the game runs very smoothly.

My biggest concern with the game is simply that from looking at screenshots, it appears that the story is going to develop into another monster conspiracy type, that has gotten so popular in the last couple of years.

Yes you can.

People have been able to detect 100+ FPS on numerous occasions.

Granted, this does vary from person to person, but it is very valid and possible.

Thinking an image does not look completely firm until it is 90FPS+,

Yeah, I was a wee bit disappointed with the frame rate, but I am running it with everything I can jack up, jacked up. I guess I should have specified, I am getting those rates in the taxing areas of the game (i.e. the jungle at the foot of the stairs).

On average I'm saying I get 60-90 throughout the game.

As for where I got the name, it's Latin

I'm getting 30-50 fps consistently (and never below 25 fps).

Not to be rude Vox (and how the hell did you ever come up with that name? ), but on your rig, NOTHING should come below 100fps. FFS, it's almost the pinnacle of evolution you have there, 30-50fps ain't all that shit hot if you ask me.

Edit : Name some other games that made you want to stop and gawk at the scenery.

Unreal the first time I played it on my Voodoo2. Dammit, but there has never been a prettier waterfall. Also, X-wing Alliance. I just HAD to fly around that Super Star Destroyer a couple of times, to see if it was really 9km long (it is, btw). Vampire the Masquerade, the monastery was beautiful too, very atmospherically lit.

Undoubtedly there are tons more games in which I stopped to gawk, but I'm like a tourist when I play games, I have to crawl everywhere, jump everywhere, and just stand around thinking shit looks pretty.

The opening level of FAKK 2 comes to mind.

The first time I loaded up Quake 1, 2, and 3 (especially 3).

Tribes 1 (mainly at how much distance there was).

Tribes 2 (snow storms, yeah)

IGI (how far away are those mountains?)

Yours?

" IS it really worth me rolling back to the Cat 3.10 or 3.9? "

Well... if your going to roll back... I'd say do 3.9's, cuz I've heard 3.9's have no issues, and 3.10's have some problems.

As I said below... I can run with 3.10's on medium settings, with no problems. Higher settings lock up on me.

Is it worth it? Hell yes. This game rocks!

I tried to play this thing but my screen went orange and then i got a vpu recover message. IS it really worth me rolling back to the Cat 3.10 or 3.9?

My intel 2.53@ 2.75 with 512mb of pc 800 rdram and 9700pro@ 344/324 does not seem to like this game!
Maybe if i try with default graphic settings but then again it probably wont look to good. I'll probably wait for them to release something a little bit more stable unless someone tells me its really worth the time & effort!

I wonder how they let that bug slip through?

Wow, that really worked. I also set my res down to 800by600 and my god, it ran like Half Life 1. Heres another thing I encountered on my zillionth time playing it through. With the patrol boat, if you drive it onto the land with bushes infront of you, the gun turret gets messed up and you can fire straight in the sky vertically. It's pretty funny cause it's like the turret detaches from the boat to aim vertically. I also never noticed I guess since I had something set as medium though you can see through the sniper scope without actually zooming in. That's amazing. So hot.

Athlon XP 2600+ (266Mhz TB Core, 2.133 GHz)
1 GB of Kingston HyperX PC3200 DDR400 @ CL 2.0
ATi 9800 Pro 128MB
Catalyst 3.10's

1024x768 - Medium Settings - No AA - Game runs smooth as hell, no problems. (Autodetect, and Water set itself to Very High)

1024x768 - High Settings - No AA - Game locks up within 2 seconds.

1024x768 - Very High Settings - No AA - Game locks up within a few minutes. Still plays smooth (Before it locks up).

Very High has extra grass, some clearer textures, some better effects, better LOD transistions, and more shadows.

The Water Mod Roxx0rz!

http://www.antoncohen.com/farcry/mods.html

I get slight stutter, but it's still playable. (Until it locks up on "Very High" Settings).

I figure between when the game is actually released, and maybe newer ATi Drivers, the lock-ups will go away. (I hope).

All I can say is that the game is awesome so far.

The buggy is bugged in low spec. For some reason it doesn't appear. Not sure what setting it is, but one of them has to be set to medium.

After I beat the demo, I loaded the checkpoint behind the sniper on the top, went back down the mountain the other way I went up. Got in the boat that was there cruised around to where the demo started, then went to the half-track beach and noticed that the big rocket\mortar boat got triggered and there he was just blasting away. I tried to get on his boat and couldn't, even though there looked like a ramp on back. I then got a running start with my boat and drove up on his, got out (he ignores you the whole time), and he isn't scale with the rest of the world, it was so funny he is this little mini bad guy. I killed him and took control of the mortar but couldn’t change the elevation just swivel with it, lobbing mortars a couple of feet away, then blew myself up with it.

O, yeah I loved playing a 2 yr old console game that made my $3,500, top of the line, I-don't-have-a-girlfriend PC almost melt.
