Far Cry SP Demo

The single-player demo for Far Cry is now available, released a little earlier than originally planned because it was prematurely leaked. The demo is a staggering download, available at 465 MB with the DirectX installer removed on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, Pixelrage, and Doupe.cz; while the 496 MB version with DX9 included is on 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, AusGamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, Happy Puppy (registration required), IGN, Loadedinc, and Worthplaying. Word from Ubisoft on this is: "The single-player demo offers an action-packed glimpse into the Far Cry world showcasing all the technically-advanced gameplay and jaw-dropping scenes from the full version of the game. Featuring a huge beach-laden level, the demo proudly showcases Far Cry's critically-acclaimed CryENGINE, huge game environments, deadly A.I., and the longest view-distance ever witnessed in a first-person shooter."

For those having problems downloading, I just went to the GamersHell site linked above and started downloading from external mirror #2. Using Download Accelerator, I was getting 370 kbps on my cable modem.

Skip that BitTorrent crap and just download directly

The buggy's on the beach about half a klik to the left (from the starting point) of the dock you face when you start. Take one of the gun-equipped zodiac rafts over there, shoot the half-dozen or so soldiers on the beach, and claim your new automobile. It's no Warthog, and it kinda sucks to drive it through dense forest, but it's a reward nonetheless.

I started off inthe raft and went way around to the right side of the beach and went up through the hills to where the Jap wreck is then went down to the "main" beach, and everyone was dead at the boat dock, the 1 or 2 guys to the right and the ones nearest to the starting point on the map were fine, but those guys did infact all keel over and died, and not very long either cause the corpses were still around by the time I got to taking their dropped weapons.

I still cannot find the buggy, anyone mind telling me exactly where it is?

Pretty good game. Dolbey 5.1 is SWEET. Jungle is very luscious.. I was getting lost and falling off cliffs coz I I couldn't see the edge.

The video settings don't seem to pay attention when I turn AA on.. so it was looking pretty jaggy.

On medium it was a bit difficult for me.. since I wanted to explore it first I did Easy. I'll rerun it in medium after Easy, of course.

Very nice looking game. Nice ambience.. weaps could sound beefier but I'm just nit picking.. physics are nice.. water rocks.

I was wondering why the guys were yelling off to the side and not in front of me, when I realized I had moved my center speaker off to the side coz the damn cat kept knocking it off.. so once that was properly placed it was all good.

There is no mutliplayer demo available. Im on the multiplayer testing team and right now its not really fit for public release but even in its current state the multiplayer is very fun and addicting, haven't had this much fun wiht your standard 3D shooter like quake or unreal (bf1942 is more of a MMOFPS) in multiplayer in awhile.

Downloaded the SP demo (where can I get my hands on the MP demo?), and just played it on my AIW 9800 Pro running Cat 4.1 without any problems. I did not do any tweaking to the settings - just left it at auto. The only changes I made was to the controls and switched the audio from default stereo to surround sound.

Game does look very good, and I am amazed the long view distance does not hurt performance (though I am running a powerful rig).

And #89 - I tried to go to the back side of the island, where that rusted plane wreck and pigs are, and believe me the soldiers/mercs there had NOT committed mass suicide. Must have been a glitch in your matrix, hehe

(fingers crossed) Patiently waiting for the DOA-Beach Volleyball mod to show up for this game(/fingers crossed)

I like this game quite a bit, except for when it took me five deaths to realize the explosions on top near the satellite dish were from ship-fired rockets. They're quite hard to see. Do they home in on you? They seem to attack more like mortars. Or maybe I'm missing something. Negatives:

1. Where are my feet and body? Really, it adds so much to immersion. I mean, it's absurd to be driving a boat or firing a gatling gun without seeming to use any limbs. Iron Storm sucked, but you had a realistic view as if you were actually in the head of a human, and not a floating camera with arms. I sincerely hope Doom 3 and/or HL2 implement this (not getting my hopes up)

2. Why does yet another game not support the extra side mouse buttons (I have a Logitech MX700, a quite common mouse used by gamers, with two extra thumb buttons). They'd be great to assign to tighter aiming and throwing a grenade. Other Ubi games (Splinter Cell) support it just fine.

3. Why do the grenades kinda just seem to shoot out of my penis? Master Chief uses his arms to throw one, and he did that two years ago.

Bitches aside, a very promising game, good to find a demo that actually pleases.

Development: I changed the settings in the ATI driver panel from "balanced" to "performance" and that solved the glitches. Note that neither AA nor AF was on at the initial setting.

Just came out of my first go at the demo and I'm highly impressed. It plays smooth as silk with all settings maxed out, and it looks like a great game to boot. Enemy AI is decent, graphics are beautiful, weapons are beefy, vehicles are fun, and controls are pretty smooth. It's just a shame I couldn't take a spin in the land-raider vehicle - it got blown up in a firefight with the local goons. Got to the top of the hill and am trying to figure out a good way to survive the counter-assault by the bad guys without being pummelled or shredded by a multitude of rocket-launchers and gatling guns.

But overall, I'm looking forward to the full release if the rest of the game is as good as this.

Pig is to the right just after you get into the jungle, on the way to old WW2 plane. I knifed it The Osprey you can take down with one shot from rocket launcher, not sure about blackhawks. This game is gorgeous!!! Anyone notice how the waves break on the beach?? Looks so very real.

Xero,

I managed to take one of them down with the rocket launcher (it will land and offload a couple of mercs at you), but not both.
It took me a good 3 rockets the last time I tried, but it could possibly done with less if aimed at a more vulnerable part of the helicopter.
Not sure about that, though.

Hurdy Gurdy, I couldn't get what you said to happen, probably not doing it right. Where's the boar and pig located? Is there any way to shoot down the choppers at the end? I hit one 2 times and it didn't have any damage signs.
With my rig, putting it at the low for texture filtering did the trick. Now it's running very nice at...800by600. I also put shadows at low since I never even realize them.

I too am quite impressed with this demo. Seeing screens and movies made it look good, but you never really know until you play it. The AI is quite good with flanking and hiding. One thing that I really liked is that if you're hidden behind a bush or something, you're actually hidden. Too many games allow the enemy to see you in situations like that. Performance was really great as well. I have not had the stuttering/lagging like others have mentioned, and my system isn't all that great. I'll definitely be picking this one up.

Yep, that's the problem I fixed by turning lighting down to low under advanced video options. Still looks amazing.
