Thief: Deadly Shadows?

If the EBGames listing is correct for Thief: Deadly Shadows, then a new title for ION Storm's upcoming installment in the stealthy Thief series previously known as Thief III has been unveiled (thanks GameSpot). This change has not been confirmed, but EBGames has been correct about such revelations in the past, and the break from sequel naming conventions is consistent with ION's recent Deus Ex: Invisible War.

My main concern is that they will choose to abandon the hard-core crowd (us) in favor of making it more "accessible". My first concern with Invisible War came when, in a video interview, Spector said they planned on make the the game less "polysyllabic"...

Hmm, while the trailer definately won't be the "Best Thief Cutscene Evar!!!11!1!!!" I did think it captured the Thief vibe and atmosphere perfectly.

Thief already had very streamlined gameplay so I don't see how Ion Storm could possibly be accused of dumbing down the game unless of course they equip Garret with a Rocket Launcher. My only concern is that the levels will be too small, imagine a level like "Break from Cragscleft" broken down into DXIW sized chunks. Ehrk.

I'm a huge fan of this series. I have been waiting for Thief 3 with an unhealthy amount of anticipation. However, did anyone else see the Thief 3 trailer that came with DX2? (was probably released online as well). Though it showed nothing to do with gameplay, it really got me down. It looked like someone analyzed all the aspects of a past Thief cutscene and then tried to recreate it, that's pretty much it.
Showing a cutscene that looks like a someone tried thier best to copy a previous work, rather than create the authentic product, only causes me to worry for the game itself.

I am really hoping that they don't screw up Thief: What ever it's called. But I have a funny feeling it's going to be so badly botched as DX:IW that I'll fall to the ground and weep over the pixels on my monitor that were forced to render a piece of junk.

Time will tell...but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm a die-hard fan of Thief but my best friend is obsessed with it, T2:tMA is his favorite game of all time. It breaks my heart to see him after he played DX2, knowing that the same team is doing Thief.

However, it is really hard to screw up a Thief game, unless you decide that the sneaking is overrated and thieves need more sniper rifles and BFG9000's.

I'm not so excited about this anymore. They managed to botch the Deus Ex sequel so thoroughly that, considering Thief: Whatever it's Called will be using (pretty much) the same engine, I'm not excited at all.
