Thief: Deadly Shadows?

If the EBGames listing is correct for Thief: Deadly Shadows, then a new title for ION Storm's upcoming installment in the stealthy Thief series previously known as Thief III has been unveiled (thanks GameSpot). This change has not been confirmed, but EBGames has been correct about such revelations in the past, and the break from sequel naming conventions is consistent with ION's recent Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Thief already has pretty simplistic gameplay systems, so people who didn't like the 'dumbing down' of DX:IW (I don't agree with that opinion, but I won't argue here) shouldn't really be concerned about that. The small levels from DX:IW is the one similarity that could hurt Thief 3, but it would be very hard to simplify the gameplay any further.

Ah comon, let us bluesnews'ers be negetive about (almost) eveything.
Doesnt hurt anyone, and if we expect a shitty game and it turns at good, so much the better. Just read my sig.

And the reveiws of DX:IW are not that good. Not the for the PC version anyway. Its around 70-80%. It's gotten as low as 50% too. Not a bad game, just not the Holy Grail most of the people who speak in favor for DX:IW potrai it. Realize that us PC gamers get a new FPS game every month almost, and most of them are just mediocre budget games. Thats why we were expecting alot more when they did a sequel for one of the best FPS games yet (SS2 is still nr1).

A reviewer said it best:

"Deus Ex: Invisible War isn't the worst game I've ever played, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's simply not very good either. It absolutely defines mediocrity."

Compared to other Xbox games maybe DX:IW is a really good game. Good for you. Now let us bitch about PC games in this PC game thread.

Always expect the worst and you will never be dissapointed

I tell you what if they/he screws Thief, like they screwed DX, he better keep his funking hands off System Shock 3.
I cant believe this no water crap either, did you see the retarded water animation for faucets in IW, it looked like they used freaking SPRITES.
There was water all over Thief games, hell there was water all over DX too.
I guess the fools are gonna try to explain the no water in Thief 3 like they did in IW, Thief 3 Deadly Shadows The Ice Age.
Thats right folks sneak/break in Igloo's, instead of lock picks you now use a portable blowtorch to cut through the toughest ICE Locks, Woo Hooo Party

break from sequel naming conventions is consistent with ION's recent Deus Ex: Invisible War.

And will they be buggering up and dumbing down the gameplay for the console market consistently with DX: IW too??

I can't believe they think they're fooling anyone with this - how more obvious can they make it, giving it a cheesier stand-alone name obviously designed to sell to the console market rather than proudly continuing the tradition of a fine, well reputed PC game series. And if that doesn't bring along a whole series of glaring design / gameplay errors with it....well...

Gosh forbid this be Thief III, a continuation of a great series.

Honestly, my hopes have nearly been squandered by the problem that is Invisible War. I will wait and see, but if Thief III uses the same engine without alterations, I think it would kind of suck.

Anyway, who knows? My pre-order is already some six-plus months old and I will be buying the third part of this series; I have purchased all the other parts.

Please, please, please do not screw up Thief III....

Not able to install Armed and Dangerous due to copy protection <sigh>,

Yep, high res textures made it worth the wait. Oh and most people are just worried. The best thing about assuming the worst is the constant stream of pleasent suprises, IW wasn't actually a terible game it just compromised too much for those of us that obsessed over the first game, on its own merit it wasn't half bad patched on the pc, just another in a long line of average pc titles that have been over rated (Call of Duty, HALO, XIII,etc..).

Eh, I tread somewhat lightly on this issue, but as it stands, people, hardly anyone in here is fully qualified in their oppinions. Sure thing, of course, as everyone is certainly entitled to their oppinions, and that's not what I'm arguing against. I'm a die hard Thief fan and have been playing/building levels ever since I left Europe as a lad. I think in some cases I had a bigger love affair with the game than I did with any female companion...disregard that last statement...but : :-ahem-: :...all things compared, DX:IW is a separate game than this, it's not even being worked on by the same crew of people. Besides, I know plenty of you were certainly dissapointed by the sequel's rather poor continuation in the series, but uh...one poster did bring up a good point. If the game is so bad, then why does it continue to garner plenty of positive reviews? I mean, it's not just contained within the "ignorant xBox realm of children." If the game's so horrible, then why are these reviewers not so scathe to state this fact? Just a thought.

Aside, Thief 3 is not Deux Ex. To argue it's going to suck this early in the game is like arguing the validity of turning an apple into a orange. You can't do it, so don' try.

I've given IW a quick play on both a patched PC system and an xbox, and the truth is both versions smell of mediocrity for a whole host of reasons. Troubling thing about multi platform development, the fact that console players are strictly speaking restricted in their freedom of movement by the more cumbersome controls. I guess I'm worried about thief 3 basically being reworked as a linear obsticle avoider ala PoP:ST, (not a bad game itself just the best example of what i was trying to talk about).

TheCorrectOpinion
That's cool with me, Warren can keep his dumbed down games for dumbed down players like yourself.
We PC gamers have plenty of other Devs to fill the gap!
The only reason Games get released on the PC... well it's simple cause it's the ultimate gaming platform. Keep the low rez poorly textured, 16 player online multiplayer cap stuff for you xbox kids!

"Deus Ex: Invisible War ruled. No two ways about it. All, and I mean *all* the Xbox reviews rated it highly."

Yeah it's just because PC gamers have more refined taste!

That resumes it all! Games like super mokey balls and mario sunshine got awsome reviews to i bet lol!! GO back to playing Devil may cry or whatever it is you play on your box, I'll keep my 100+ frames per sec, 64 player online, high rez games!

No all you rainbow bright xkids can start your little flames... and go work on your next pride float!

I love it. Keep bitching PC crowd. I just love it. Maybe Warren will decide he's had enough of all the complaining and put out games for the Xbox even faster.

Deus Ex: Invisible War ruled. No two ways about it. All, and I mean *all* the Xbox reviews rated it highly.

Between the software and hardware of the PC (and the constant whining and complaining on top of it!!!!), I have no idea why any games get released on the PC.

Viva la Xbox!

I'd like to make a prediction as well: No matter how valid our concerns are about a game/company, there will always some guy who insists on dismissing them as being the product of jaded cynicism.

Ion Storm is a bunch of hacks

Yes. I mean, what was so great about DX? It had shitty graphics (even for it's time), poor weapons, terrible action side of gameplay, terrible stealth side of gameplay, the voice acting alone makes me retch in some places. So why was it successful? Simply because it had a very intriguing and engaging story, the atmosphere felt great, and it had something we hadn't really seen in other games, the multipathed way to solve missions, which can open up other levels and gives a lot replayability. The length of the game was also a huge pro.

Ion Storm is a bunch of hacks. Deus Ex is the only good game they can be credited for (except maybe Anachronox). Everything else they got is Dominion, Daikatana, and a clumsy Playstation port of Deus Ex. You notice how they don't dare try something new and instead recycle old franchises onto the console.

Well, if they manage to screw up the new Thief game then I guess we'll have to accept the fact that Ion Storm's fruit didn't fall far from the Daikatana tree. Sure they got the original Deus Ex right but that might very well have been a freak occurrence... anyway the new title doesn't exactly fill me with hope.

knowing that the same team is doing Thief

That's just it, it's not the same team. I've you've seen those ingame movies of thief 3, you'll see that their artists are about 1000x better than those used for invisible war. And Harvey Smith isn't leading the design, but then again, Smith or Spector may do something to influence the designers and add stupid ideas, like the removal of water that they have already done. I'm also worried about level size. Thief levels = massive and super cool. Invisible war levels = rediculously small and shitty.
