Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 Announced

The Official Soldiers: Heroes Of World War II product page is online, revealing Codemasters' plan to publish a third-person tactical action game set in the second world war "that plays out like a blockbuster war movie." The game carries a Summer 2004 release date, and their downloads section offers screenshots and a few different versions of a teaser movie from the game, also available as a streaming clip on the front page. Here's a bit more that they sent along about this:

It’s all out action warfare – we’re proud to announce Codemasters has secured the rights to “Soldiers – Heroes of World War II”, a stunning 3rd person tactical action game with explosive gameplay and equally dramatic 3D visuals.

Created by Ukrainian company Best Way, under the development title of “OutFront”, Soldiers is another great game from 1C Company who we’re already working with on Perimeter and Wartime Command.

Soldiers is based around the exploits of World War II controlling specialized units from Allied, German and Russian campaigns.

You take control of a small group of soldiers primarily engaged against overwhelming odds requiring stealth, guile, speed and aggression. Mission objectives include blowing railway tracks, kidnapping enemy officers, destroying convoys. Oh and much of this activity will take place behind enemy lines.

I don't care how many WWII games come out, because it's the best time period to create a balanced game in (besides a fictional futuristic setting). WWII was nothing less than epic, and if I were to make a game, I'd probably set it during WWII too. But what I really want is a *good* MMOFPS WWII game, that isn't shitty a la WWII Online. After I see that, then maybe I'll agree that the genre is worn out.
