Miami Vice & Knight Rider 2 Announced

Dutch publisher Davilex Games announces their plans to delve back into the pantheon of 1980s action television for a pair of new projects (thanks Frans). Davilex Games announces the development of Miami Vice is the announcement of plans for a game based on the unshaven adventures of Miami cops Crockett and Tubbs. Also, Davilex Games announces the development of Knight Rider 2 has word of plans for a sequel to their game based on the exploits of K.I.T.T. and its Member's Only-clad passenger (oh sure, he pretended to drive). The description of the Knight Rider sequel acknowledges the criticisms of the original: "Knight Rider 2 will address much of the customer feedback received on the first Knight Rider game as well as add many new features, which will improve the gameplay dramatically whilst maintaining the authentic atmosphere of the series. Knight Rider 2 will contain more action, in-game animations, special effects and dialogue than its predecessor. In addition to the gameplay elements of chase, race, explore and puzzle, Knight Rider 2 will also offer two complete new games modes: Combat and Mini Games." Here's a bit on Miami vice, to be developed by U.K.-based Atomic Planet Entertainment:
Miami Vice will be a 3rd person operated game with free roaming and numerous encounters and missions. The player can embark on dangerous raids and fast-moving gunfights in a bid to bring justice to nightclubs and warehouses of Miami. A gripping storyline featuring detective work, conspiracies and corruption will be experienced as the player strives to destroy Calderon's narcotics empire.

Crockett and Tubbs were undercover detectives in the Vice department. The cars, boats, clothes etc were part of the cover and belonged to the department not Crockett and Tubbs. They were only taking home about $300 a week circa 1985. People always seem to say "How could a normal cop afford the most expensive car on the planet?". He didn't. Never once in the show did Crockett ever go out and buy himself a Ferrari Testarossa. It retailed at $87,500 in 1986 so his wages certainly would not cover it! Everything belonged to the department. The only thing Crockett owned was the gator called Elvis and the three day designer stubble. My fav show of all time and I can't wait for the game. Bring it on!

He got the Testarossa after bitchin' to Castillo that the other car wasn't cutting it when doing million dollar drug deals in the more salubrious parts of town.. the real reason was Ferrari were about to sue the producers over the fake 365 Daytona they were using.

Oh, well... back into my time machine!

I thought that was a confiscated drug dealer car that he was using. They always used to have a 911 with cop lights on it brought around to public events that was a confiscated car.
Oh, I grew up in Dade County, BTW. One of my PE teachers did acting on the side and was in a Miami Vice episode (he got blown away after 2 minutes on screen when a house he calls on for donations to the Police Ball or whatever is a drug house), so I know of what I speak.

forget, did they ever justify how a Dade county detective was able to afford a Ferrari Testarossa (retailed for something like $100,000 in 1982) and Armani casual wear on a detectives salary?

You dare ask the question of the 80s that are best left unanswered?

How'd the General Lee survive those jumps?
How'd the Cosby's keep their house so clean even though both parents worked and you never saw a maid?
How did Crockett afford all that stuff? And why did stars want to BE on that show?
Why did Coach have to die so early during Cheers run?

You can't handle the truth!!

Oh come off it! If you're old enough, you know damn well you liked Miami Vice! Sonny Crockett ("Hey pal!") and Rico Tubbs, and Lt. Martin Castillo kicked ass! The vehicles, the women, the locations, sweet! They had classic lines on that show, sweet writing. There would've been no Vice City with Miami Vice! I don't know it if was Sonny Crockett's impression on me, but to this day I still hate wearing socks!

Brenda: How do you go from this tranquility to that violence?
Sonny Crockett: I usually take the Ferrari.

Sonny Crockett: The secret to success, whether it's women or money, is knowing when to quit. I oughta know: I'm divorced and broke.

I forget, did they ever justify how a Dade county detective was able to afford a Ferrari Testarossa (retailed for something like $100,000 in 1982) and Armani casual wear on a detectives salary?

Sonny playing fast and loose with the RICO act or....?

My main concerns are thus... will you be able to shoot or, perhaps, feed poisened meat to Crockett's pet gator and kill it..

Will they get in the same shit that they did with the tv series, and not get Ferrari's okay? Let alone, have the audacity to call a modified vette with dubbed in sound a Ferrari.

with a talented dev, it could almost be okay.. like nin said, Vice City Lite. Still, i'd rather back a dead horse as being a winner at the next steeple chase.

so now not only the entertainment mediums of TV and movies falling back to producing remakes of garbage 60's and 70's TV shows because of a fear of trying something new (or total lack of imagination....or both), now its time to start polluting gaming with this crap as well.

I knew it wasn't going to end with the Dukes of Hazzard

It's not the inspirations that's the problem. You could do a kick-ass, state-of-the-art, fully rendered kick-ass kick-ass game based on Gilligans Island. Basing the game on a known quantity gives gamers an easy way in, lets them feel like they'll be familiar with the world and its rules.

The problem is that when most gaming companies acquire rights to something, they just want to make the quickest profit possible off it. So the slap some half-ass game together, release it, and the rubes buy it up.

The problem is that most

Back on topic, when was the last time a sequel to a bad game was successful? Did that ever happen?

Battlecruiser Millenium...?

Edit: The above depends on your definitions of 'success' and 'sequel'.

Bah! When does the Baywatch game come out?

Can we please do away with the cough routine (e.g. *cough*Halo*cough*)? That hasn't been funny for about 5 years now.

I was one of the unfortunate few who actually played through all of the first Knight Rider game. There were only 12 missions, and even though I played on the hardest difficulty level, it took me about 90 minutes to beat the whole game (and I only had to redo a mission once). One thing I hafta give the game, though, is that it was quite pretty and didn't suffer from drastic frame rate drops, which is more than can be said for certain recent games *cough*Halo*cough.

This is Davilex games we're talking about here. Makers of the horrible 'European Racer' for the PSX/PC. Something which I will never forgive them for. It was the worse game EVER!
Anyway - I was not surprised KR was crap. I'm not holding my breath for KR2.
