Conan Demo

By Crom! A demo version of Conan: the Dark Axe is now available, offering the chance to get your axe into gear and check out Cauldron's upcoming third-person action/adventure based on Robert E. Howard's fictional barbarian. The demo is a 130 MB download, available on 3D Gamers, ActionTrip, Adrenaline Vault, FileFront, Filerush, Gamer's Hell, Tiscali Games, and Worthplaying. Tiscali Games has picked up some details on the content:
David Durcak from Cauldron replied to our question about contents of the Conan demo, that it should be considered as beta-demo only (control system is not finished yet etc.). It contains 2 levels set to Kordava city at night and to one of the towers. This beta-demo will run only on graphics cards with Pixel shader 1.1 support (final version of game set for February will however work also on GeForce 4 MX or GeForce 2).

I'd sure hope the 9700pro has the proper support, or they are looking at a very small user base.

Crom doesn't care about your 9700pro and pixel shaders 1.1. He will favor no one mortal's setup over the other's in game combat.....up on his mountain and stuff.

Works fine with a 9700 pro here. Will be trying with a Ti4600 when I get home.

Runs on my 9700pro, wish it didn't cause it is totally abysmal. People say don't judge a game on its demo, but I don't think anything can save this unless they overhaul the entire thing.

Well I've only played for a couple of minutes so far - will play it properly when I get home from work - but I wasn't disappointed because it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting (and by that I don't mean it's bad, not by any means). Of course everyone will whinge about it's console-centric design, but apart from that it seemed OK.

Then again I am an abosulte sucker for third person fantasy hack 'n' slash stuff. This is no Severance\Blade of Darkness, but what is?

Still, the jury is out until I play it more extensively tonight.

Severance\Blade of Darkness and Enclave were GREAT games, so I'm downloading this with very low expectations.

Always expect the worst and you will never be dissapointed

Wasn't expecting much and didn't get much. I'll probably rent it on console.

You know selling dlc before you patch the client doesn't impress upon me the need to support your shit. -massdev

Wasn't one of the writers for Conan really just a nom de plume of Robert Jordan?

Well that game sucked. Pretty boring. Fighting is simple and dull. Conan runs like a dork, and the control scheme which you can't change is pretty lame. I couldn't even figure out how to use that FIST icon that appeared. That meant I couldn't go any further, thus, uninstall happened next. I wouldn't recommend.

Fighting is actually not that simple. Just by experimenting with different combinations of buttons and keys (a controls screen, or even just a readme would have been nice Cauldron!) I found all sorts of combat moves, and after a little practice combat becomes really enyoyable, stringing together attacks and handling multiple opponents with really satisfying moves etc. You can do all sorts of stuff.

OK his running animation is horrible, the camera and movement controls really need work, and it's not going to win any awards for the engine (though it's pretty enough), plus they really messed up by not providing a readme, tutorial or any control options, but actually there's a potentially really good game here.

To anyone who enjoys this sort of hack 'n' slash game, or is a fan of Conan, you will definitely find some things to enjoy here, and at the very least some potential - let's just pray they sort out the camera and add some strafing or something in the final game.

Yah, his running looks like he has diarrea and cant find a PortoPotty.
Im guessing you cant change your controls cause its console based

Keep in mind the blurb does say its a beta-demo. If this were a normal demo, yeah, I'd agree the game sucked, mostly from the controls (or lack thereof). Still, if they polish it a fair amount it could be a decent game, certainly better than a lot of the drivel thats been released within the last year (barring CoD and a few others).

As the 'subject' says; the game didn't work on my Radeon 9800 XT! When I click "New Game" the game crashes back to windows with some error message about the Conan.exe :S

I don't expect much of it either, not 1 game has defeated the divine combat system of Severance: Blade of Darkness!

or maybe it was called Golden Axe back in '89.
