id Software Gets Owned

id Software sends along the announcement that a couple of their employees have been granted entree into the company's small group of owners:
In further strengthening our management tem, id Software is proud to announce that Todd Hollenshead, CEO, and Tim Willits, lead designer, have been granted ownership shares in id Software, Inc. Todd and Tim join the long-standing ownership team of Adrian Carmack, John Carmack, and Kevin Cloud. Everyone at id would like to thank Todd and Tim for their years of dedication and congratulate them on their latest accomplishment.

I loved Masters Of Doom. And as you suggest that's exactly the picture the book paints of id. The idea that ownership is being expanded is momentous. Don't forget Carmack has talked of having one more engine in him after this and then possibly retiring, or going on to do different things, though it looks like he won't be getting that $10 million rocket prize.

Most serious companies have plans for management transitions so one way of looking at this is Carmack saying hey, I'm not going to be here forever start thinging about what you're going to do when I'm gone. If YOU were a CEO with no stake in the company you'd be looking somewhere else. If it's your company you have a vested interest.

All this congrats...reflects all your cool work.. yah you... STUFF doesn't really compute. This is a business decision.
