GTA4 Not Heading to Sin City

An update on Multi Theft Auto has news they received from Rockstar debunking the recent suggestion that the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto life-of-crime series would be GTA4: Sin City (story). They are reporting that the sub-title is incorrect, as is the projected 5 November 2004 release date, though they admit the release date is "close." All this supports theories that Amazon.co.uk's GTA4 listing was actually inspired by the April Fools' joke on Shacknews (story).

MMO sounds feasible.

To balance all the thieves, they could let players decide to be cops

Here's hoping the new game comes with an original soundtrack, ala GTA3 - the 80's soundtrack to VC was good and all, but it lacked a little something compared to GTA3.

Massively multiplayer? Uh, why?

In Pc Zone UK they had an interview with the Rockstar peeps, and when asked about multiplayer they said in the distant future they were looking at the possibility of an MMO so you never know.

According to my understanding, the "next" GTA game would be the third and final game using (a version of) the GTA3 engine, while "GTA 4", the true sequel to GTA3, would come at a later date and represent as drastic a difference from GTA3 as GTA3 had to GTA. (Supposedly.)

So it could actually be "GTA: Sin City" and Rockstar's statement that the proposed title was incorrect would still be valid.
I'm guessing GTA: San Andreas, though, for no other reason than a general feeling.

i think you have to be an 80's fan to like Vice city more (which I am and therefore did)

plus the storyline is alot cooler when your character talks back - and has the voice of goodfella Ray Liotta

Its GTA4 because it will be the 4th GTA engine. Vice City was the exact same game engine (with some updates I assume, though I've never played it) but with simply a new map. While GTA4 should be a completly new or majorly overhauled engine producing a very new experience compared to the previous. Just hope they don't pull what they did in GTA2 where 2 had prettier graphics but because of its complexity just simply wasn't as much fun as the original.

I wonder why it's being called GTA4 at all. Wasn't Vice City a sequel? Or was it a prequel?

I agree with the above poster though. I felt the GTA3 city just plain felt better than Vice City's.

GTA MMO please?

Massively multiplayer? Uh, why?

I find that particularly odd: everyone in the whole city is a criminal running around stealing cars?

I contest that while not every game needs multiplayer, CERTAINLY not every game needs to be 'massively multiplayer'.

Shit, if they could get 5 people to play multiplayer wise, borrowing some of the style from the first two games, THAT would be fun.

While I agree that having different locales would be cool -- too large a scale starts to diminish, for me, the more close knit, detailed setting in trade for a larger, less complex one.

I found the levels, architecture, and overall 'quaintness' of certain areas in GTA3 to be more appealing than in Vice City: the beach area with the cliffs, the used car lot/trainyard with the tunnel, the radio station, the diner down the hill, the docks, the dam, the parks, under the bridges ... there was something more varied and felt more "inside the city/alone as a criminal" in GTA 3 than in VC; I'm not sure how to explain it.

I definately have a hard time seeing GTA: the theme, the immersion, and the wild atmosphere of raising hell as a lone psycho on the street -- being duplicated with 10,000 other people online at the same time. Not to mention that the last thing GTA needs, in my opinion, are restrictions based on experience or otherwise.

If all one could do was drive around "more" of the area types of GTA3; and just have a frag count and play deathmatch/raise hell without any objective with even 4 or 5 other folks online....that would be mind bogglingly (endlessly) fun, IMO.

So is Sin City referring to the Frank Miller comics or Las Vegas?

it would just impart a larger sense of scale if they modeled an entire state instead of just a city...

So you would desire a larger sense of scale rather than one quality city? I dunno about you, but in VC taking two minutes to drive somewhere was quite alright, imagine driving for 30 minutes in GTA: Sense of Scale to get to the next available mission.
