Out of the Blue

Hey, those year-end polls and awards are popping up all over the place. I don't get the chance to play through everything that comes out by a long shot, and so my own opinions on these things cannot be considered comprehensive, but out of everything I got to play this year, I'd have to give my Game of the Year nod to Call of Duty. Hats off to Infinity Ward for creating a single-player shooter that overcomes all of the most common complaints about the genre by providing storytelling, teamwork, and gobs of that elusive fun factor.

While doffing hats, congratulations to forum regular Drew and Dr. Wendy, Blue's News unofficial veterinarian, upon their nuptials, not to mention their marriage (badoom-bah!).

Thats funny, im moving to the US in about 6 months and im going to be glad to be away from europe. As always the gras looks greener from the other side, but if you do move here be prepared to experiance the absolute crap that some nations here dump on the others *cough* france *cough* germany *cough*. Although france is by far the worse culprit. nothing like sticking to EU rules and freedoms whilst at the same time maintaing illegal import bans and bullying the smaller countries around.

Hey, I was born right across the Channel, in Scotland. I've lived in several places around Europe, drifting from Glasgow to England, eventually to Germany, then to Belgium. Got tired of the trade grips the EU had with Japan and my inability to acquire a decent job through my educational background, came to the US, and was practically handed one. It's not a bad country to live in, despite questionable politics from up top, but hey, what country doesn't have it? Kind of funny to hear the Americans complain about their own problems when they'll almost encounter the same thing in various forms wherever they wish to go. But hey, all the same, welcome to the U.S.

The power cable is just a pass through, it should not have to be on the same one a hard drive is. In fact, most people would suggest using a spare/free one not on a hard drive if possible

Yeah, I'd put the card on one plug and the drive on another...did Bunko mention what his PS was, BTW? I don't remember...

I'll be very interested to see what the problem was, once you (Bunko) figure it out...

Hidden&Dangerous 2 get's my vote. Very detailed and accurate weapons, and alot of them. Very nice missions with many ways to solve them, stealth and open out assault solutions to most missions. Graphics are good and the multiplayer with it's custom inventory loaduts and presets was great too. Sadly this game never got the hype CoD had.

Just my 2 reichsmark.

Interesting. Maybe Ill try that if it gets cheaper soon. I havent had the chance to play through CoD SP, but I wasnt all that excited about it. multiplayer was kinda fun on lan when we used the "CKR for CoD BETA" www.autokick.com to turn off crosshair, but that made the MG sucky, so.. well fun for a while..

Red Orchestra is the MP game I prefer. much better than CoD MP.

Call of Duty go home. Red Orchestra is just much better.

Hmmmmm...

When you install an 9800 Pro, does the extra power connector HAVE TO be plugged into a hard drive or can you only connect it to the card and the PSU?

This new computer is making me rip my hair out. It's fucking ridiculous. NOTHING has worked. I'm going to try swapping in my Geforce3 probably sometime this weekend to see how things go.

I got hold of a PS2 recently. I used to be a huge PC-games-only-for-me-snob. I haven't powered up my big box since.

I'd like to find a decent tv-out device so I can bring my gaming rig out into the living room.

I'm very seriously considering a move to Europe sometime in the next several years (need to finish my JD first) as the overall culture is just so much healthier mentally and physically. It's just too damn depressing here.

But anyways its a free (western) world and your welcome to come on over and experiance it yourself, although i wouldsuggest you dont give up your US passport to fast,..

and I guess most people not so educated in World War II are quiet happy with a product like CoD, while others (myself included) get bored after the first 5 minutes.

You got bored with the game because you are so educated about WWII? Bahahahaha!

EDIT: Didn't see your post, Enahs. I'll try emailing those goofs at ATI tomorrow. Too late right now. I don't think they'll help me out too much, though because my card is an OEM

Errg... edit won't work right now.

Anyways.

I agree with whomever posted CoD borrowing heaviliy from Enemy at the Gates, it also took alot from Band of Brothers.

Yeah, some of these events did happen, however with a little research there could have been plenty of scenario's that wouldn't have involved exactly the same troops involved in those shows/movies. But why bother? People watch these movies and then get exactly what they saw in them, and I guess most people not so educated in World War II are quiet happy with a product like CoD, while others (myself included) get bored after the first 5 minutes. Thankfully CoD takes only about 5 hours to finish on Hard in the first run.

About the weapons:

Yeah, they are weapons that were in use, however I simply can't consider them well modelled. They follow a pretty basic Rock-Paper-Scissors theme. And they couldn't even take the time to include the proper pistol for the germans or russians.

Sure, the Luger P09 is very popular, but it was quickly replaces by the Walther P38 9mm pistol, at least MoH got that one right.

Oh well, I'm preaching against a storm here, people for some unexplainable reason like CoD and it'll probably end up Game of the Year in many places, even though it dosen't deserve that title at all.

They might have gotten a little more mention, players, and copies sold...if they would have freaking released a demo!
It just is stupid to not release a demo now’a days, no way around it. A lot of people just will not buy it unless they can try it first. I for one have not played it

Call of Duty for Game of the Year?

Oh no. I mean seriously. I was ver ydisappointed by this game. The Singlerplayer was hardly a challenge, and the multiplayer mode is nothing but Quake3 style bunnyhopping contests with wanna-be World War II weapons.

PCI mode? WTF is that anyway? Mine's stuck in it too, across 2 OS reinstalls, and a couple years of use.

It means you did not install the mother board drivers (which really can help out performance wise in lots of things).
And even if you did, a lot of the time the AGP driver and MB driver are separate, as well as the IDE driver. You might got a nice fast Hard Drive, but with the proper MB/IDE driver installed, it just is not running at full speed. Just like video card might not be running at full speed if it is in PCI.
But I should mention that AGP PCI speed difference(in how it is referring to it, not the actually slots them selfs) is theoretical, as it only tends to help with "speed" if your video card does not have much memory.

Bunko
http://apps.ati.com/cservice/webform.asp
Hit that, go through the crap and send them off an e-mail telling them the trouble you are having, everything you have done, etc. They might then either be able to tell you what exactly is wrong and how to fix it, or look up the serial and see if those batches are known for trouble, etc. Maybe even replace it...*cough* But at least they do not charge any money to submit an e-mail/web form, so it is worth a try. Which I will say they resolved an issue for me via e-mail/web form help! Try it!

Hey guess what? I just realized that my Geforce3 in my old computer has been in PCI mode for 3 freaking years. AAAAAAAAAGHHH.

My computer still will not resolve itself. I can get it to say that I have AGP enabled but it doesn't appear to work at all. And the stupid control center STILL doesn't work. BSOD every time.
