Federal GTA Lawsuit

Suit seeks to ban sales of popular video game (thanks Mike Martinez): "A lawsuit by Haitian groups that asks for the top-selling video game 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City' to be removed from store shelves will be decided in federal court. " Also, Give Back Take Two (thanks Hump and Steve Nutley) has complaints from The New York Post about GTA, apparently making the case for how depicting violence in a game is worse than molestation: "This is 10,000 times worse than the worst thing anybody thinks Michael Jackson ever did to a little boy."

So basically this game is worse than all the sins of humanity combined or something? I think someone needs a reality check.

Why don't we just ban movies like Godfather because, oh, they don't respect human life. Blah blah blah. It's always something. Happy New Year.

doubt this dipshit would be saying the same nonsense had the 'little boy' had been his son.

These games aren't made for kids, thats why they have mature ratings. Society has already gone this far, going any farther by doing something like 'banning' violent games is infringing on the rights of others.

NY Post is a rag paper anyway...

If memory serves, when you're helping the exiled hispanic general escape on his yacht, you're repeatedly ordered to kill a the French, who are storming the boat. Where's the French lobby? For that matter, you kill a lot of Cubans, mafioso, gang members, etc, where are their representatives to protest? From what I've read in the "popular" media, the version of Vice City these reactionaries have played consists of hiring, then killing, hooker after hooker, then driving off to kill nothing but Haitians. Oh, and it features "highly realistic graphics," instead of cartoonish stereotypes and cars that do triple-flips and take minor bumper damage. Gotta get me that special press release copy, I can't wait to play!

A line like "Kill Haitians" has no business in a main stream video game (substitute any other ethnic group or sexual minority there and you see what I mean). If the Ku Klux Klan want to make a game, well, it's their right to put whatever they want in it, but don't expect to find it on store shelves.

But they apologized, removed the line, and that should be that. A moment of poor judgment that's now in the past. The Haitian community's only making themsleves look bad now, and probably boosting sales for GTA while they're at it.

I won't even comment on the NY Post story. Too easy. It's pretty typical of that right-wing nutjob Rupert Murdoch and his worthless rag anyway.

I want the copy where you actually get to have sex with the prostitute in the backseat of my car, because mine only has her staring out the windshield in the front seat while the car rocks back and forth

This guy is a retard. The game clearly states it's for a Mature audience, and it's noones fault but the parents of the kids who are playing the game if it ends up in a minors hands.

All this hype is only going to boost sales of the game, so bravo to dipshit Mr.Byron. And if you sell your stock in Take Two, then your an idiot because the best is yet to come from them with GTA 4 on the way, and rumours of Multiplayer will sell the game more then either of the last two.

I do agree that the game should not be ported to the gameboy, and that would be a stupid move on R*s behalf as most Gameboy owners are kids.

Ohhh man what a dumbass.
It's great to see people ragging on something pretty insignificant when there are huge problems that aren't being paid attention to. An article like this will cite 2 maybe 3 incidents where allegedly people went on a killing spree because of GTA, but fail to point out that hundreds of people who have never touched a video game have gone and killing WAAAAY more people. But obviously the game made them go crazy, it's impossible someone would just become a nut job because of their abusive parents/rough childhood/drugs NO IT'S OBVIOUSLY THE FUCKING VIDEO GAMES! And if they're so troubled by violence why aren't they going after violent movies, or books? What about how the media hypes up violence as much as they can to make a quick buck (including the New York Post)? Oh wait, those aren't just telling people their opinions back to them, GOD FORBID A NEWSPAPER DELIVER ANY NEWS!

I dunno, if I remember correctly, it was a gang war you participated in, there was nothing racist or genocidal about it.

I sent an email to the author. Went like this:

Dear Mr. Byron,

I have played and enjoyed Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I have never killed anyone, nor have I ever struck anyone in anger. People enjoy different forms of entertainment, and while video game violence may not be your bag, it certainly is enjoyed by many other adults. The fact that children can buy and be influenced by games of this type only stands as testament to the horrible parenting skills of many Americans. Instead of sensationalizing the fact that these games are made, perhaps you should draw attention to the fact that many parents irresponsibly allow their children access to this type of entertainment

Aha! That DOES put it in context. That line makes much more sense now and I withdraw my initial criticism. I wish that had been in more articles that covered this, but of course that's not how the press operates.
