TRON 2.0 Patch

This downloads page on the framed TRON 2.0 Website now offers a new version 1.042 update for Monolith's first-person shooter. The patch is available as an iterative update for version 1.030, or as a full patch to update any previous version of the game. Windows XP is required. Word is: "Saved games generated from previous versions will not work after this update has been applied." The patches are mirrored on 3D Gamers and Worthplaying.

man, that's so ghetto. i wish that there were more of a push to think about the saved game format up front, so that developers could ping the version of the saved game and restore it/update it as needed instead of just straight up breaking it. tron's been out for a few months now, so i can imagine that many people will update with this patch and loose 10-20 hours worth of gameplay.

there really has to be a better way.

just a bit more time spent up front in the technical architecture part seems to me to be able to really pay off later on.

If somebody cared enough about a game to play it, be bothered by bugs, and/or be awaiting a given patch..........do developers really think the game would want his/her savegame to be completely deleted or corrupted?

/shrug

Thinking the game was good, but finding the last third repetitive and tedious,

Usually when patches break saves it's due to updated level designs... it is always possible the user saved in a location that no longer exists, or is now inside an object, or would break new/updated scripted sequences. This kind of this is really too complicated to address with save updates, so a common fix is to restore saves to the beginning of the level. The problem then, is deciding how much ammo, weapons and, in the case of Tron, player upgrades, to remove from/reward the player when the level is reset... Either way, updating saves when level designs change is not a trivial task. That said, I have no idea if this patch actually changes any levels... oh well. Just some things to consider.

honestly, though... how hard would it be to consider that up front and do an incremental save at the beginning of each level, then? essentially, have a 'start of level' save up front, then the actual place in the level afterwards (in the same file). if the savegame actually is on a level that has a change (unlikely, but possible), then revert back to the beginning of the level and /explain/ that to the user. don't break all save games just because there's a chance that it would do that, though.

good points, btw. thanks!

A game that is essentially a single player game, and a patch that breaks savegames... that's a really *bad* idea.

Y'know, it'd be one thing if it was a more or less 1-dimensional single-player game, where you simply got to a particular level, and had all of the weapons found up to that point (like Half-Life or Unreal II). But the myriad combinations of different experience points, allocations of same, and installed "programs" in Tron make people actually CARE about their savegames.

No, Monolith . . . F *YOU*

That's just not a way to treat fans of your game.

is that judging from the list of fixes they made, none of them really pertain to single player, with possibly the exception of the memory leaks between level loads. Which makes you wonder what exactly it IS that's breaking your previous save games?

I'm just suspecting lazy coding.

Then again, this game is 5+ months old, is anyone still playing the single player version? I played through it twice, and that was pretty much it, I have to admit (although those two times were a lot of fun).

They HAVE made Single Player save games available from the site.

On long as they work: No, you aren't totally screwed. And it must mean the developer understands. So no reason to go get upity... I hope the link helps.

If you want a tight game, get NOLF 1 and 2. Much better, IMO. (Although from what I hear Contract JACK is terrible, so avoid that)

Actually there was at least one change to the SP game. Many people had complained that it was not possible to get your build version to 10.0.0. Due to this complaint, they patched this in the latest update.
Apparently the saved game incomparability is not a problem if you were running 1.04, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.
