On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

Considering that Doom 3, Half-Life 2, STALKER: Oblivion Lost, Far Cry, and other "next gen" titles will all be out before the end of next year, it'll be interesting to see how Duke Nukem Forever holds up in comparison. That old E3 promo video, while great at the time, is looking rather dated now - so one wonders if they had to go back and upgrade/overhaul the whole game over again just to keep it up-to-date with contemporary game tech.

You'd think by now the publishers wouldn't even mention release dates for DNF, it's such a joke in the gaming community. DNF has had more dates than Paris Hilton.

DNW... who really cares about this now apart from the dev team ? The prior DN games were some of my all time faves and was anticipating this a couple of years ago, but no longer have any feelings for the release of Whenever anymore.

CS: Zero is a joke. 2004 release, wasn't this Gold back in November ? LMFTO (although thinking about it, that would give it a 6 month Xbox exclusive, so maybe that's the cause of the release)

Wasn't CZ just reviewed in PC Gamer or CGW last month? Or on Gamespot?

One of those, not just the Euro review from a while ago. I could have sworn I saw one in print. 74% or some such.

I don't think old Duke has much to worry about... at least not in regards to competing with other games.
The only thing Duke has to battle at the moment is time... the world may only last another few billion years and it will all have been a wasted effort on 3D Realms part if they don't finish it before then. Who knows, maybe it won't be the planet self destructing, but aliens taking over. Either of these scenarios is, in my opinion, more viable than Duke having to worry about the DooM Marine or Gordon Freeman kicking the shit out of him in public because of them all being relatively current.

My money says Duke will be out for X-Box 2.... or 3, 4..

How does a game that's been declared Gold twice in the past 3 months get delayed for another 3 months? And there's already a review of it in PC Gamer... As for 3dRealms.. delayed ANOTHER year? Just ridiculous. I'm all for delaying a game for quality, but just what hell are they doing?

Arg. waiting is the hardest part

Despite 3D Realms MONUMENTAL screwups (I wonder what engine they're using today?) I'm still looking forward to DNF. A Lot. Look, this game has generated mountains of bad PR, tarnished their name, made them the laughing stock of the gaming industry ... yet still they haven't just pushed the thing out the door to be done with it. I really think they want to make the best damn Duke Nukem game ever, whatever the cost.

We bitch when companies push unfinished games on us, then we bitch when they take their time to make a good game. Yeah, maybe this is a pretty extreme example of the latter, but when everything's said and done it's the quality of the game in my eager hands that counts the most.

Strangly, it's always kind of a pick me up to hear about DNF release dates. Imagine someone from 3DRealms (who else but..) saying in 1996: "Well, now that Duke3D is such a success, fans can expect to see the sequel at around.. oh, I don't know, 2005-ish."

LOL

Also, check the sig and know.. I've updated my site

In their defense, an analyst pinned them down on the conference call and specifically asked about the status of DNF. It happens every quarter. And every quarter, it's my favorite question of the call.

Exactly. There's no way in hell it can live up to the hype...seriously, just can it and move on.

As far as CS, something funny's going on there...

Seriously, what is Valve's deal? Don't wanna make a concrete release date, fine, that's industry standard. But what could they possibly gain from remaining so silent about it? A simple "sorry, we goofed, give us (3,6,...) more months" would probably make all forgiven. Instead, they feed suspicion with this nonsense. Sure, Duke Nuken Whatever's obscenely late (this could be a game NINE YEARS in the making), but at least 3DRealms stuck a firm "when it's done" years ago, and assured us the media blackout was purposeful. With its dev cycle, it better look like FF:Spirits Within and play like nothing we've ever experienced, but that's another rant.
