Anything less at this point would be unacceptable. There is absolutely, positively no excuse for taking 6-8 years to develop a game. In that time you could develop at least three brand-new game engines (as Id has). Hell, I don't know anything about making games, but I could design DNF from scratch in that time by myself, and that includes the time it takes to learn coding, animation, modelling, and graphic design AND put them to use to create a finished product. Duke3D was one of my favorite games ever, in fact one of the only games I ever designed maps for, but sadly I've come to accept that 3DRealms is a ship lost at sea, and DNF is their anchor. The only thing worse than never seeing a sequel to DNF is waiting for years and then getting a mediocre sequel.
"When it's done" is what they say, but what it really means is "We honestly don't know when the fuck it will be done". Piss-poor management and planning ahoy!
