On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

You mean Daikatana was actually released? Man, where was I? Oh, that's right, I was too busy being Romero's bitch to notice...

Sometime in early '98 one of the employees, since departed, brought a pachinko machine into the offices of 3DRealms and there's been a highly competitive series of round robin tournaments waging ever since. They would code, they just don't have the time.

DNF late 2004 or 2005, 1997 and beyond...LOL.

Somebody put George Brousard in a spider hole and fill it with quick dry cement. Maybe then the game may actually come out.
And just which engine will it be using in 2005....HL2 or Quake 4 engine. This is the longest running joke in game development history.

This was the kind of thing that destroyed Daikatana. Nearly finished development with the Quake engine, then saw Quake 2 and scrapped it and started all over again. I wonder if they were tempted to do it again when Quake 3 came out?

I'm one of those people who could care less about graphics and engines. Just make the gameplay great and most people will overlook any dated graphics. Developers need to make peace with themselves at the start of their projects, decide on the engine and the quality of graphics and live with it.

Who woulda thunk it that 3DR and Valve would become huge industry jokes even though they've published a couple of the greatest PC titles ever (Half-life and Duke 3D). It's mind-boggling how DNF can be "pushed back" to 2005. I think that it's just 3DR's joke...naming a game "Forever" and then never releasing it. Boy, aren't all those fanboys gonna be pissed. And as for CZ, something funny is definitely going on there, but who really cares anyway, seeing as the game will be considered mediocre at best. Valve has sure dug a nice hole, with the HL2 hoopla, and now the bizarre CZ stuff.

.... Too bad it's still just an extremely modified HL1 engine (which itself is an extremely modified Q1 engine).

Certainly, I'm impressed that they've done so much work and added so much to it, but really, when they say it's a "new" engine that's just marketing (and a lie).

As for DNF, I think I remember hearing it being developed on various versions of the Quake or Unreal engine at different points in time. Maybe they have gone and actually developed a new engine from scratch (or went back to the BUILD engine and VOXEL's ahahahahahahah....). Guess we'll just have to wait and hope they don't go out of business before they have something new to show. ;(

I like how 3DR stole the "when it's done" line from id Software... Kinda like how they stole all Duke's one-liners from Army of Darkness and They Live.

These guys are a joke. The last game they made was for DOS. They haven't even released a game since the proliferation of 3d acceleration cards... That speaks volumes.

Hehehe yup Blue is on a roll lately. Yesterday the UC newsbit brought in none other than Derek Smart "PhD" for a bit of flamage. Doesn't get any better than that.

Valve has spent the better part of their time (since the release of Half-Life) developing a pretty sweet looking game engine. Now if Valve was able to develope a brand-spanking new game engine, and build a game with it, doesn't it make sense that 3DRealms is probably doing the same now too?

I mean, seven years to make a game is pretty extreme. In that time they were going to use an in-house engine (Prey, I believe), then Quake (for speeds sake, if I remember), then Quake 2 (for better functionality or something), then Unreal (for the vast open areas), then UT (for functionality again), I think they have finally gone full circle and realized that their best bet was to develop an engine on their own... probably Prey 2 or something...

again, just speculating for the fun of it!

Seriously, what is Valve's deal? Don't wanna make a concrete release date, fine, that's industry standard. But what could they possibly gain from remaining so silent about it? A simple "sorry, we goofed, give us (3,6,...) more months" would probably make all forgiven. Instead, they feed suspicion with this nonsense. Sure, Duke Nuken Whatever's obscenely late (this could be a game NINE YEARS in the making), but at least 3DRealms stuck a firm "when it's done" years ago, and assured us the media blackout was purposeful. With its dev cycle, it better look like FF:Spirits Within and play like nothing we've ever experienced, but that's another rant.

DNF? 2005? why bother?

Exactly. There's no way in hell it can live up to the hype...seriously, just can it and move on.

As far as CS, something funny's going on there...

You'd think by now the publishers wouldn't even mention release dates for DNF, it's such a joke in the gaming community. DNF has had more dates than Paris Hilton.

In their defense, an analyst pinned them down on the conference call and specifically asked about the status of DNF. It happens every quarter. And every quarter, it's my favorite question of the call.
