On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

I'm not going to read through all the messages but i attended the Condition Zero launch event in San Fransisco and the Vivendi people told me ship date for CS:CZ was "Q1 2004"

The game is finished though (playing it right now), so i guess since they missed the holiday rush, they can as well release it in another few months.

Dagok you just helped me illustrate something else about 3dR that I disliked.

They tried (and successfully did to most people) to take credit for Max Payne. They published it and came up with the name. Remedy coded the engine and built the game. 3DR had nothing to do with the actual game being made.

Think before *you* speak...

Those fucking goofs at 3D realms should just shut the fuck down and apologize to the community for their stupidity. They have claimed that this vaporware shit was going to come out pretty much every year since 1998. Remember when this was meant to be a Quake2 killer?

STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, GET OUT OF THAT BED AND GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR, GET OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE: GET DOWN ON THE CEMENT, I DONT CARE IF YOU'RE NUDE, GET DOWN ON THE CEMENT, I DON'T CARE IF ITS FREEZING! WHERES THE DRUGS, WE KNOW YOU GOT THE DRU

Sweet lord almighty, I thought for sure this game was vaperware for sure! This game should be the best FPS game ever once it's released (2010 is still my prediction, and that was 3 years ago, so I could still be right!). I can picture it now, real live 3d strippers! I hope the game just makes it out.. Take your time guys, because by the time we are bored with Half Life3 it will hopefully be finished

When the Duke 3d came out, I was in my 30s, single, just learning about ethernet cards and cheap hubs and 10baseT wiring. Wow, that was a long time ago, in a city far far away (350 miles). Now I'm married, over 40, (still in decent physical shape, though), have an 8 year old child who beats me in Motocross Madness 2, I'm the Network Admin for a large company. And DNF is STILL in development! ha. At least I still play computer games. I wonder if I'll still be alive when it is released.

Do some research before you speak. Max Payne 1 and 2 was done by Remedy, not 3dRealms - 3DR probably had some contributions, but not many.

[Exactly. There's no way in hell it can live up to the hype...seriously, just can it and move on.

It's been too long. The hype is dead. It's all a part of their master plan. Right now everyone is fed up and expects complete garbage.

Now they don't have ridiculous expectations to fulfill. All they have to do is put out a half decent game. Everyone will pity them for all the crap they've taken over the years.

It's Duke, and it's a first person shooter. Is there really anything earth shattering to expect?

Um Max 1 and 2 were done by Remedy not 3d Realms, although 3d realms did have some small hand in the games.

Only reason I could think of for the game to take so long for release is they are updating to the most current version of the Unreal Engine, and if you look at UT 2004's release date it sounds like this is the version they are using by the late 04-05 "semi official, call it what you will" release timeframe.

The last game they made was for DOS. They haven't even released a game since the proliferation of 3d acceleration cards.

What do you call Max Payne and Max Payne 2? Think before you speak.

Seriously, the game is never coming out, ever. It's all a big joke. Whenever there is a conference call, and a publisher asks 3D Realms about Duke Nukem Fornever, all the guys say "we're working on it, maybe in about a year" then they hit the mute button and run around the conference table giggling and pushing each other into the bushes.

My guess is that sometime this next year, after the game engine has been shaken out, they'll move over to the HL2 game engine.

I remember a couple of years ago they said Duke's multiplay would be a "TF style" game... Seems they can't think of *anything* original...

Hell, I don't know anything about making games, but I could design DNF from scratch in that time by myself, and that includes the time it takes to learn coding, animation, modelling, and graphic design AND put them to use to create a finished product

I said it before, bears repeating now. I think a mod team could make a Duke sequel (barring obvious copyright issues) and have it out before DNF, and it might possibly be a better game. Use UT2k3 and it will probably look better.

At this point, DNF would have to be nothing less than epic in scale to live up to expectations.

Maybe a year after it's released, after the bulk of the sales, when they've moved on to something new. A nice, honest, frank postmortem on Gamasutra would be a fascinating read.

------------
quote: "I really think they want to make the best damn Duke Nukem game ever, whatever the cost. "
------------

Anything less at this point would be unacceptable. There is absolutely, positively no excuse for taking 6-8 years to develop a game. In that time you could develop at least three brand-new game engines (as Id has). Hell, I don't know anything about making games, but I could design DNF from scratch in that time by myself, and that includes the time it takes to learn coding, animation, modelling, and graphic design AND put them to use to create a finished product. Duke3D was one of my favorite games ever, in fact one of the only games I ever designed maps for, but sadly I've come to accept that 3DRealms is a ship lost at sea, and DNF is their anchor. The only thing worse than never seeing a sequel to DNF is waiting for years and then getting a mediocre sequel.

"When it's done" is what they say, but what it really means is "We honestly don't know when the fuck it will be done". Piss-poor management and planning ahoy!

King of Wired's Vaporware list Dec 18, 2003, 13:51
Dec 18, 2003, 13:51

Looks like DNF will make the top of Wired's vaporware list yet again this year. Or, more likely, they will get tired of even discussing it. It does make me wonder though, just WHAT could be taking so fricking long to finish this game? There have been several generations of revolutionary games released since this game was announced in '96. What will it take for DNF to justify this obscene amount of development? Here's my $0.02:

* Complete realistic physics and interaction with all objects (this is everything, down to the last ejected bullet casing).
* No "levels", just one massive interactive world (seamless level loading will work if and only if you can travel to any place anytime you wish).
* 100+ hours of gameplay. 15 hours of gameplay will not cut it.
* Near photo quality textures, etc. (Doom 3 caliber graphics or better)
* Revolutionary gameplay. There simply HAS to be more to this game than blowing shit up with some new weapon. Likewise, DNF must be much more than a straight forward FPS. I want to use the environment to kill (ie push walls or book cases over - see interactive environment above).
* Deformable terrain and buildings. Not like Red Faction, complete and utter capability to destroy the ground and buildings and to have the environment react accordingly.
* Not a great story, but a LANDMARK story. I want to laugh, I want to cry.
* Duke humor for ADULTS. This had better not be some kiddie game.
* Kick ass multiplayer. No deathmatch only. How about coop?
* and what else, oh yeah, how about no freaking BUGS!? If you can't get it right in 9 years, you are never going to get it right.

I can't imagine working on this title and still being enthusiastic about it. Surely everyone at 3DR is just as sick of DNF as the rest of the world.
