On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

Good point Assistant to Mr Bolton...

Supreme Commander? Am I missing something here?

Lets face it, Valve was the unfortunate victim of a crime, plain and simple. Atleast we can be reasonably sure we will see Half Life in the next 6 months (please Gabe dont make me look like an idiot on this one).

At this point can anyone believe anything that comes out of the 3DR camp? The day I believe it exists is "when its on the shelf at Best Buy".

Yeah it's funny like yesterday's posts from the Supreme Commander.

Despite Valve's fuckup with the Sept 30 release date and the stolen source code, at least they've got something concrete - something to show for their work over the past 4 or 5 years. What about 3D Realms? I don't think anyone at 3D Realms is laughing.

I think their new mantra should be:

"The release date will be sometime after the start date."

Personally, I'd ask them when they plan to begin working on it...;)

I would just like to thank everyone that has contributed to this (and previous) thread(s) on DNF release dates. I gotta tell ya between this and HL2 threads, I get a stomach ache from laughing so damned hard...

Perhaps that's the REAL reason anyone from 3DR or Valve release any info...they need a good laugh just like the rest of us

Keep up the good work!

Aye, you have to wonder which revision this will be now. I know, I know, we are all so evil for talking about the game, but one does begin to wonder about the many, numerous problems in making this game.

Oh well, I will still give whatever a whirl whenever it comes out.

I have a mild interest in it from the fabulous game that I played in the past, but that is it. I could care less about the company/team making the game now.

Hoping all works out in the end, that this is not the death of Duke,

It's been too long. The hype is dead. It's all a part of their master plan. Right now everyone is fed up and expects complete garbage.

Now they don't have ridiculous expectations to fulfill. All they have to do is put out a half decent game.

As soon as they release a new video or some screens, the hype will be up at 400% again, trust me, we've seen it before.

DNF better be pretty damn good.. BTW I dont remember where but some magazine (PCGamer?) had Duke with a beard as a "next month.."-ad.. wasnt that this month or last month or something, or do I just remember wrong..? maybe we'll see something new soon..

As for CZ .. who the hell cares?? people will buy this to get the new... gas grenades...and..eh.. ???

Call of Duty go home. Red Orchestra is just much better.

I don't understand why people get their panties in a knot over a release date. Maybe the hype has worn off for now, but once the game starts showing signs of existance a release, everyone's interest is going to peak again wondering what the hell comes out of 7 years of development.

There is no "window" to miss unless the game itself ends up being too dated in terms of technology and game play. If its a good game (or even if its not) it will sell with enough marketing. Though I'm sure the game will sell better if the people who played the original game were still alive.

Which makes me wonder how any product that is in development for that long can possibly end up being leading edge? Everything they thought was cool (and possible) 7 years ago, has probably already been done. Even if they had the foresight to write code for "tomorrow's hardware", I doubt they could have planned that far ahead. Either they are constantly revising their existing work to make it fresh for today, or they'll have to revisit it before release time to freshen it up. I just see it being an endless cycle if the development takes too long.

They must be suffering from major feature creep now... 'cause how will they justify the years of development to investors (never mind the players) if the game doesn't go beyond what other games are offering?

That other dude at 3DR who isn't George... think it may be Scott Dalton or something like that.

Scott Miller I think.

He's posted here before as has Broussard.

Guessing we won't hear from them today,

I just dug up that DNF video they showed a couple of years back and watched it again. It still looks decent but, like anything using Unreal these days (I've not seen Deus Ex2), it looks a tad cartoony.

Anyways... this made me think of something else which, in light of this latest garble, is cause for laughter. Just after that DNF video was leaked by whichever news network, that other video came out... DooM 3 at Mac Expo in Japan, I think...

That other dude at 3DR who isn't George... think it may be Scott Miller or something like that. Either way, he realised DNF looked a tad sad next to DooM3 and gave it a good go in his .plan file. I can't quote him because my memory isn't that good, but he said something very, very close to "You can't compare DNF and D3. DooM is at least 2 years away and uses hardware nobody has yet. DNF will be out in a few months."

This proves my whole Alien theory I considered earlier. Scott can't be from this planet, obviously.. but where ever it is he does come from uses a whole different calendar to us. So, maybe he's still on target if one of our years is one of his planets months?

I'm still looking forward to this game but until I can buy it and play it, I'm just going to laugh to myself and anyone else in the vicinity whenever I see anything about it. You can hardly put HL2 in the same boat. We all expected it, but they only claimed it existed earlier this year, so they can bonk about for another 5 of our years or 5 of Scott's months and still look good compared to this.

Edit: Thanks Bronco. I have no idea where I got Dalton from and now I think of it, except for an average James Bond actor, I can't place the name Dalton.

No kidding. The only time I even think about DNF is when there's a story about how the game is still vaporware. Otherwise, I don't give it a second thought because I don't believe there ever will be a DNF. If it's done by now, it never will be.

Even if it was the best game ever made-which it most certainly won't be-it still can't justify this ludicrous development cycle. Oh well, it's Broussard's money to waste.

The release date for DNF isn't "when it's done", but it's "When George Broussard no longer gets a kick out of watching news sites devote time and space to his vaporware".

Then and ONLY then we'll either see a release, or an admission that there is no game, and never has been.

I mean, seriously, why do news sites even still devote ANY attention to DNF, 3dRealms OR George Broussard??

they sure as shit can't make any profit on this after this long

Nah, they could create or commission about a million expansion packs and spin-offs, just like they did with D3D. And yes, I played BOTH Duke Nukem: Nuclear Winter AND Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach *hangs head in shame. deep deep shame*

they have started over, several times i believe. besides at the end of the day they are making the game that *they* want to play and not for us, if we like it then its a bonus for them. they sure as shit can't make any profit on this after this long (unless you count write-offs each tax year)

9 years? Dec 18, 2003, 16:09
Dec 18, 2003, 16:09

Has it been 9 years? If so lets check this out... 52 weeks a year, I'll take out 2 weeks for mandatory vacation time (Christmass vacation, etc) that's 50 x 5 = 250 work days per year. 250 x 8 = 2000 work hours x 9 = 18,000 hours in development total, which is 750 straight days worth of time the game should have, roughly speaking, been worked on. That's the equivelant of a *team* of people working on a game for 2 years of their lives straight with no sleep or breaks. What the hell takes that long to make?!??

Look at J.C. he looks ahead where he thinks technology should be at by the time he's finished and shoots for that and gets the game done. I don't know what this team is trying for but it's just sad to think anything could take this long to reach a publishable state.

Everyone can probably predict that what they've done is constantly revised or replaced existing content for their game (unless this game takes like 900 hours to complete), but all of that can be done by sticking to their existing content, releasing then move onto an expansion or sequal. So what's the problem? Is it some need to not be one-up'ed by anyone elses technology? 'We can't release now because X game looks / sounds / plays better then ours?' That's just sad. Swallow your pride and have faith in your fan base (though it's pretty much too late for that).

3DR should just give up and start over. I'm actually embarrassed for them. They are "the" laughing stock of the game industry. So sad. Wait! Why am I sad? They've had the best job security in the software industry than anyone over the past 5 years. Bastards!
