On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

Oh, you forgot the other 'mere' additions.. ah...like maybe an order of magnitude higher the poly counts, completely new LOD system, new netcode, new facial animation system, 200 ver PS 2.0 shaders (more advanced than both STALKER and Doom3), specular illumination and HDR effects, bump mapping (DOT3), the new spacial audio system... Yeah sure apart from JUST those meaningless little things, it is exactly like HL1.
It seems you're the one that's the fanboy here. I already mentioned shaders and all that other stuff is merely built on top of their existing code base. They never "rewrote the engine from scratch". That's the lie that they're perpetuating. They just piled more features onto the SAME ENGINE.

All the features you name as evidence for it being a "new engine" can easily be added to ANY decent 3D game engine. In fact many of them are components of open source projects for Quake1 or Quake2.

I never said they were nobody. I said the title wasn't going to sell well. They went with the bargain bin of game engines to save on costs.

By the way, I wouldn't rag on Valve so much if they would tell the fucking truth for once in their lives about anything.

In automobile racing, DNF means Did Not Finish.

Sigh, this might become a more apt description.

I still keep wishing for the game to come out - it has a loyal following. I just hope the developers there are not getting too discouraged with the long long development time. Having just completed an 18 month, poorly managed, hell project, 'i feel their pain'.

For a minute there I thought you might actually offer an intelligent argument about the evolutionary nature of the engine. Alas it was not to be. But still I must thank you for perfectly defining the expression fashionable fanboy bias.

Oh, in what way is Source not a new engine?

It's just the HL1 engine, with the opengl renderer removed or disabled, shaders, displacement meshes (terrain) added to their bsp version, and the Havok physics engine. Other than game-specific stuff, that's about it.

Why do you think only one company so far has liscensed it, and for a sleeper title at that? Because Valve shows it to these companies, and they laugh them out of the building and then pick up the phone and call Id or Epic. They don't publicly humiliate Valve because, first and foremost, it'd be horribly bad ettiquitte and make their own company look like jackasses in front of the entire industry, and secondly if you look at this stuff you have to sign non-disclosure agreements.

I wouldn't put Valve in anywhere near the same company as 3DRealms.

Valve certainly botched their Steam release, but at least we know they are regularly working to improve it. I'll be very surprised if it doesn't have offline play and p2p when HL2 comes out. Also WON still exists atm so there really is no problem there.

As for CZ - Value kept outsourcing the game to various companies and rejecting the mediocre results, so I can't fault them for the crap made by third parties. Who cares about old generation CS these days anyway?

In contrast to Valve, 3DRealms haven't produced a modern 3d game at all, let alone a GoTY. Duke3d was great gameplay for its time, but there can only be so much love for a 2d cliche peroxide misogynist. :p I'll admit to being impressed by the E3 video, but having to sell IP and whore mother out to maintain wages for a 7 year development cycle on a game - most of which has been wasted updating art assets and piss-farting around with engine swaps. Hard to respect that without tangible evidence of progress.

Oh, in what way is Source not a new engine?

"There is a Scott Dalton, who works at Legend Entertainment (Unreal 2). "

Thanks Lunchpail. Now I know where I got the name from.

What are Legend doing now? I've not been taking much notice since finally getting into U2.
They evidently have talent. They evidently know how to use the Unreal Tech. They know how to make good stuff (Wheel of Time). And, obviously, they know how to complete a friggin game... Maybe 3DR should toss Duke their way and we'll get to play it before the fourth and fifth comings of Christ.

I'm bored... no games that grab me lately. I'm this close to buying another X-Box so I can perve on digital bimbettes bashing each other silly with DOA. Indeed it's a sad state of affairs:(

I suppose I should apologise to Mr. Dalton for mixing him up with Mr. Miller. I like my comfort in having no idea what's involved in making computer games... it makes it so much easier to throw mud at companies like 3DR who can't, for want of a better term "get it up"

I have no idea where I got Dalton from and now I think of it, except for an average James Bond actor, I can't place the name Dalton.

There is a Scott Dalton, who works at Legend Entertainment (Unreal 2).
