Out of the Blue

Thanks to all who offered suggestions on my video card crashing yesterday. Thanks zaq for the advice to try scaling back to 4X AGP, which has cleared up the problem. Sometime today I will also try the fix found on: Call of Duty system hangs or VPU recover error messages playing game, an ATI troubleshooting page, sent along by Jody, as it was CoD that I was using for a good amount of this troubleshooting, so that may supply a fix that's less of a work-around.

Huzzah and kudos once again to Frans for getting the forums and other scripted elements updated yesterday. There should be very few remaining areas of the site with the old format remaining at this point. The issue of how the font sizes scale as you bump them up in your browser's settings still remains to be addressed, but the dust from this whole project is otherwise pretty well settling.

Yeah i switched AA to 6x(which is supposed to be same as the "old" 8x and it's much smoother.
Confusing shit if u know what's going on and good luck to those who are still thinking the sliders mean the same thing. They should at least try to be consistent damn it! Isn't there supposed to be a standard for these things?

What was previously 6x is now 12x, and what was 8x is now 8xS (but both retain their origional names of 6x and 8x).

That's f$%*ed up...so it fixed the problem?

To quote Edge from nV News forum:
It's not because you changed your CPU, it's because you updated your Nvidia drivers. In the latest drivers, they've mixed up their Anti-aliasing modes a bit. What was previously 6x is now 12x, and what was 8x is now 8xS (but both retain their origional names of 6x and 8x). 8xS is a more graphicly demanding mode then regular 8x is, so you'll notice more framerate droppage with it. If you want similar quality to what you had before with the old 8x mode, use 6x AA, as it will offer much better performance then what you're getting now. However, I'd suggest using 4xS mode. I think it's the best performence/quality mode there is, and should run plenty smooth if the game still manages to stay in the 20s with 8xS.

Edit: Just remembered that 4xS may not be availible under the control panel for GeforceFX cards. However, you can use a program like Rivatuner to access all the availible AA modes (including the OLD 6x and 8x settings), as well as other cool tweaks.

Thanks for the reply nin,yes the frame limiter is on,and that's what worries me. Boy oh boy i hope nothing is seriously wrong with my system.

When you uninstalled and reinstalled VC, did you make sure the folder it was installed to was totally empty before the reinstall? Maybe an ini file got left from the first install, and that's where the problem is?

You could do a start, run, and dxdiag. Check each page and make sure it says "no problems" at the bottom.

As indiv pointed out the other day, make sure the card is running in agp mode. I missed this one completely. (If you're running XP) Right click on your desktop and select "properties". Then click the "settings" tab, and "advanced" at the bottom. One of the tabs that pops up should name your video card (mine has the nvidia logo and then says "Geforce4 Ti 4600"). When you click on that tab, you get the nvidia box, plus a pop-out to the left. On that main page, under the setting "bus", it should say either AGP 4x or AGP 8x. Mine was f$%*ed and said pci, and as indiv pointed out, that's bad.

Let me know how it goes...kinda curious...

I need some help for i am truly stymied by this weird behavior. GTA:VC hates Intel cpus?

You have the frame limiter on? I heard when it's on, you're locked at 30 fps, but with it off, the framerate can be very erratic (sometimes very high, and sometimes going quite low).

I just recently changed my cpu from an AMD Xp 1900+ to a P4 2.4c O/C to 3.0 running on dual channel DDR,and using a FX 5900. I thought of playing Vice City again and fired it up with 8xAA/8xAF using the latest 53.03 dets thinking that if i had previously played it with the same video card on a 1900+ with the same AA/AF settings & running it as smoothly as a baby's bottom, then logically it shouldn't be a ploblem with a P4 3.0.

Boy was i in for a shock for the frame rates often dip below 20s especially if there was tire smoke or fog and even on good clear weather the gameplay was jerky.

I've tried reinstalling video drivers, the game itself and nada no dice. Other much more graphically intensive games like DX2:IW/COD/KOTOR etc are prefectly fine.
I need some help for i am truly stymied by this weird behavior. GTA:VC hates Intel cpus?

Thanks!

No way! my 500 was a ton of fun. I remember cooking at least 4 rectifiers though until I discovered Maplin in the early 80's and built my own.

The brakes were shabby and the front wheel was way to small but the engine was a sound beast and the handling was pretty good. Did a ton-20 too which was great with no windshield and left most cars for dead back then. I still have fond memories of leaving a brand new ford escort xr3i for dead from a standing start.

aaaahhhh the memories.

Edit aha, I had a 500-4 though not a twin so maybe teh twins were shite.

How is that breaking the rules? He's supposed to have the strength of a spider. So if all his muscles are "spider muscles" I'm sure he could hold up much more than just a cable car. Am I missing something?

Also, does anyone know how to get rid of flash overlay ads? CNN and many of the other major news sites are using them now, and CNN removed their close button. Rather than having to install another browser, I'd like something like the google toolbar to use in IE.

How about, Blued Screwed and Tattooed. Ok, probably too long.

Or how about Blue Balled. I hate when that happens.

Speaking of Spiderman ***SPOILER WARNING*** (like anyone reading these forums hasn't seen it) did it bother anyone else when Spidy suddenly had the strength to hold up a cable car with one arm? I know it's a comic book movie but certain rules should still apply in the reality created by the the movie. I'm not a comic book guy so I have to ask, how strong is he supposed to be?

If it was the 21st you would still have plenty of time. How many people do you have to shop for? I shop for one person, my wife takes care of the rest.

I guess I just cant see why ANYONE would use IE, I use it very rarely with that avant-browser plugin, but thats still not quite as good as Firebird IMO. Firebird fits like a glove, since you can modify EVERYthing in it real easy.

BTW: whats up with that IOTD: EA ad ? Did they accidently print the incomplete scource instead of the Background picture and/or text??

Call of Duty go home. Red Orchestra is just much better.
