Users cling to old Microsoft operating systems (thanks Mike Martinez) is one of those weird coincidence articles, as it comes on the day I am finally going to bite the bullet and install WinXP on my gaming system, which has been steadfastly running Win98 since, well, 1998. I've always been happy with '98 as my gaming OS, and appreciate its lower overhead and continued ability to boot into DOS mode, but it's come to a point where that system needs an OS reinstall, and it just doesn't seem to make sense to do another '98 reinstall, especially with hardware and software support dwindling further every day.

Make sure you head over to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm to disable some of the bloat that comes with XP.

VERY good advice, using Viper's guide I went from having around 90MB free memory on bootup to about 140MB free upon bootup. Viper's guide is definately the best, but a few others that are pretty good:

Just out of curiosity does anybody know a way in XP to manage the cache size? Like the vcache section in win.ini under 98. The above mentioned 140MB free is on a system with 256MB RAM and most of what's still eaten up by XP is the cache.

If you have room for another hard drive you can always do what I did and buy the OEM version of XP and put it on a new hard drive.

So you have XP on one drive, and 98 on the other? How do you have the XP drive formatted, is it FAT32 or NTFS? How does that work, since 98 can't access NTFS drives?

The only down side to using the OEM version of XP is that you don't get any support from Microsoft - they expect you to call the maker of your computer.

You mean people actually try to get support from Microsoft at all?
