Out of the Blue

Last year I recall a couple of occasions where rain storms failed to put a dent in the snow piles, but yesterday was the opposite... one good day of rain eliminated about every flake that had previously accumulated.

Thanks to those with advice on hosting a network game behind NAT... I haven't gotten to try this out yet, but it's reassuring to know that there's a method to properly tunnel through to my machine.

That New Zealand accidental prohibition story of the day from yesterday was actually from a couple of years ago, so please just consider that the nostalgia link of the day.

That is why I am really hoping Johny Carmack gets his rocket ship built, so I can be long off this planet by then!

You know what's cooler than cars? WALKING PLACES. I'm not going to buy a car until I absolutely have to.

No, my car is cooler then walking. But until my knee injury if I had anywhere to go under 5 miles I would ride a bicycle (weather permitting) . I have started being able to do that again, for things less then 2 miles (gotta get back, so that is 4 miles). But it is starting to get too cold and icy around here.

But also my place of work is a 45 minute drive (and I driver really fast) away from my place of school, walking that everyday would suck!

But walking is good, I will agree with you! I walk to the grocery store whenever I need to go (My knee has been good enough to do that for a while now). It is only a mile at MOST round trip, but it is a great feeling. Walking is good, but my car is better then walking

Can someone please explain to me what the fuck "ricing out" your car means?

http://www.mostly-muscle-cars.com/images/toyota.jpg
http://www.celicas.co.uk/Fast-and-Furious-Supra-Car-Pictures-2.jpg
http://www.spsdtn.com/fast%20&%20furious%20RX-7.jpg

Spend so much money on all kinds of "cool" looking exterior things, rims, spoilers, skirts, hoods, trunks, bumpers, EVERYTHING. Smack some bright ass paint, and all kinds of logos and decals. Add some florescent lighting.

Then spend money tuning up your base model import cars engine. Basically replace everything on the engine and the trany, suspension, etc. That way your $10,000 car with $20,000 worth of parts can still not go as fast as an American muscle car. Not to mention the fact that you could by an old muscle car, and spend less money fixing the engine and such. AND IT WOULD NOT LOOK SO DAMN STUPID WITH ALL THAT CRAP ON IT.

That is ricing, also so the movie "The Fast And The Furious" and "Too Fast Too Furious", as well as watch some rap videos. I shall also mention those pictures are toned down version of what you can see on the street, and believe me I do see it. I can appreciate the work they put it, but they look STUPID as hell.

And every other time I pull up in my "ride" to a local pizza place I love, which also happens to be where the local ricers around here like to hang out. Still every time I pull up, my car is a hell of a lot more impressive then the crap they got, it also cost less, but looks like it cost 100X more. I happen to driver a Shelby Cobra 427 KIT CAR. I did not build it, but I had to do quite a bit of work on it, and a friend who owns a body shop fixed up the skin....it is SCWEEET! And yet, it can go a hell of a lot faster then most riced crap (which I have not tried to make it go fast, just work). It looks so much damn better, and I spent so little on it....It just brings me joy to purposely park next to those damn riced out crap cars and make them look like horse poo (even more then they already do).

And they really do rev up the little 2 liter riced out engine like it will intimidate me, and I just turn mine on in idle and it sounds like a freaking beast. Ohh yeah, I should also mention that I tuned and tweaked the engine for gas mileage and not speed! I got over 30MPG in the city, and I would bet with all the crap rice performance tweaks they get less then 20. AHAHAHAHAHAHA I just can not stop laughing. I am glad they got something to put work into, but god it is stupid…ahh well!

Can someone please explain to me what the fuck "ricing out" your car means?

As far as I can tell - and this is coming from an old fart who's never seen The Fast and the Furious - "ricing out" a car means taking an ordinary Japanese car (usually) and modifying it in some of the following ways:

  • Sticking whats looks to be a coffee can on the end of the tailpipe so it sounds like a chainsaw. This part probably mystifies me as much as anything.
  • Wheels that cost almost as much as the car. Sometimes they seem to be 18" in diameter with 21" diameter tires.
  • Lots of "ground effects" like fender flares and spoilers. Last year I saw a Civic with a rear spoiler installed backwards. If it ever actually got going fast enough the back end would have lifted off the ground. Thank god it really "looked phat and shit".
  • They're sometimes lowered enough so that a good speedbump will take out their new front air dam.
  • Neon lights under and in the car.
  • If they still have any money and are serious about it they now put twin turbos on the engine and install a nitrous system to blow the whole thing up.

Please move along people. Nothing to see here.

Edit : I always like how it's considered REALLY bad to watch Foxnews, since they're so conservative and obviously Republican, and yet at the same time it's perfectly fine to link CNN, ABC, NBC and for fuck's sake, THE BCC AND THE GUARDIAN!!!!, heralding them as fine examples of independent journalism. Because, you know, as long as they spout the Democratic side of the story, it's all fine and dandy.

Here's what I've found in about three years of following the american newssites daily. They ALL suck. They're ALL biased, they all have an agenda, and none of them is telling you the whole truth, or the whole story, without any kind of slant in it.
For awhile a friend and I (me, myself, usself?) started to follow news outside of the sphere of the US and Europe (since European newspapers / news sites are even worse), such as Australian and Japanese sites, to see what they had to say about matters, but then you find that you're missing out on quite a bit of what is considered "important" here. For example, the whole Iraq issue, when it was still building up, wasn't important enough in Japan to take up space for Sumo Wrestling results.

I finally started reading Reuters, and haven't really looked back. Reuters provides news to the other news sites (and news channels and newspapers), not to the public, and thus they are marvelously devoid of most types of bias.

In the end, however, I just decided that following the news did nothing but make me depressed, and so I just stopped. I haven't got a fucking clue what's going on in the world right now, and I've never felt better.

Was shocked to see a news link to Fox News, Wrongs Wrights, given the history of this network, its hard to believe anything that comes out of thier mouths or minds. I dont recall news links to the Fox page, if Blue is dong that I can only be thankful I have missed to ones in the past.

One thing that I've found common across the political spectrum is that everyone enjoys indulging in group think.
I say, challenge yourself and read/listen/watch the media on the other side of the political spectrum. Broaden your mind and don't just get sucked into your political party's propaganda. It will help you to realize that everyone is just another flawed human being with good intentions. Of course, media designed to inflame the other side, like Rush Limbaugh and Maureen Dowd, I'd recommend avoiding for everyone, no matter your leaning.

With that said, I admit I don't read/watch Fox News. But propaganda and media spin are powerful tools, and I do make efforts to expose myself to other media sources (mainly op-eds in major newspapers across the political spectrum). Don't let yourself get controlled. So try to expose yourself to all the perspectives. Free your mind.

Here's another kicker, is there really no fully anti-war candidate? Here's a topic brought up by the Senator from my state. Anyone have anymore details about this?

From the WashingtonPost (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A60314-2003Dec12.html) : "Two days ago, Sen. John Kerry accused Dean of flip-flopping on his signature issue: Opposition to the war in Iraq. The criticism forced Dean to concede that he sponsored a resolution that would have allowed Bush to wage war without approval of Congress.

"The resolution failed in deference to the one that passed, and that Dean has criticized his rivals for supporting."

When the bank teller told me she had a twelve year old son, I told her that she "looked awfully young" for someone with a 12 year old. It was an intended compliment, but, as you may be able to discern from this example, it's probably prudent to avoid negative adverbial modifiers in a compliment. A positive modifier, such as 'pleasantly', or even a neutral modifier, such as 'surprisingly' in this compliment, for example, would have reduced the possibility for confusion.

Heh, see, just don't talk shit about good music and we'll all be fine

(rant mode on)

The way I see it is, I don't know very much about math and chemistry. So for example, I wouldn't come into your room, interrupt your chemistry homework, and start trying to give you all my opinions on chemistry and tell you what the right answers are. But people feel the need to do that with music.

I respect people's personal taste, but not everyone is equally informed and not everyone's opinion on every subject has equal weight, but with many things artistic, people act like this is so.

I don't know much about painting. I can look at a good painting and appreciate it, feel moved by it, think it's beautiful. But I wouldn't be able to give much constructive criticism on it or share my ideas about painting technique, you know? I can enjoy one painting more than another, but I wouldn't be likely to start talking about which painting is better than another and which ones suck and such.

On the other hand, I'm not color blind, which is what it's like when these tonedeaf bastards start rambling about what music sucks.

And some people just have crappy taste. That's fine with me, just leave me and my music alone god dammit, it's not as though these people understand any better after I've explained it to them, so just don't bother me.

(rant mode off)

Whew. This has been annoying me lately, if you can't tell.

So, what is your first language?

Hey Bronco, you've been missing for a bit, haven't you?

I'm Dutch by nationality, I only moved to the United States about a year and a half ago. So my first language is Dutch, but I'm also fluent in English and German, and I can even speak a modicum of French. It's a Dutch thing. We live in a piss-ant country, so unless we speak a lot of languages, nobody's going to notice us
