Unreal II XMP Demo

As promised yesterday, the demo for Unreal II XMP is now available on FilePlanet (registration required). This provides a sample of the expanded multiplayer being added to the first-person shooter sequel that will be available as a free download for Unreal II owners and in stores as part of the upcoming Unreal II Special Edition. Here's how this is described: "This demo is a single level from Unreal II XMP ('Expanded Multiplayer'). The all new XMP mode is a class-based multiplayer game where teams use vehicles, cooperation and Unreal II: The Awakening's devastating weaponry to battle it out across large-scale terrain maps. Teams fight for control of energy sources to power their war machines, deployment points to get to the front lines quickly, and ultimately, four artifacts that are required to win each match." The 149 MB download is mirrored on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, BeyondUnreal, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, Filerush, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, GameSpot DLX (registration required), GameTab, Happy Puppy (registration required), IGN, Loadedinc (registration required), and Worthplaying.

fortunately you won't have to reinstall the full game. You'll just need the CD in the tray when you install XMP and that it (unless you wanna play the SP campaign again)

Hey Hump. Is this true? Where did you get the info? That would be great. Rather not use the HD space for a SP game I'll never play again.

Damn, and I just bought it at EB for $15.

I coulda saved 5 bucks!

Sounds like you must not of enjoyed the game if your upset about $5. I wonder if you can get that 110% pricematch some stores offer if you find it cheaper elsewhere.

I dunno about the rest of the country, but here in VA the CompUSA flyer for this week shows (the original) Unreal II for $9.99!!!

For that price and a free download of XMP, I think it just may be the motivation some of you need to finally pick it up!

Hope the other 9 maps play as well as Garden.

The other maps are great, plus there already a good number of community maps ready to be released soon after the patch is officially up for downloading on the 9th (last I heard).

Creston: I've been having problems since I've installed the 3.8's and now the 3.9's as well. I found out that updating the drivers re-enables "fast writes" through the ATI control panel (in case you don't know fast writes creates problems in several games including BF 1942). It seemed to have cleared it up (that was only 2 days ago so I'm crossing my fingers)

ye if they released this with the game in the first place, I think it would have reached the same praise as rtcw did (shallow sp, great mp).

heh. "code panel OWNED" Did CliffyB work on this?

Anyways, seems like fun, maybe Ill pick up U2 if I find it on discount, I've only tried the first U2 SP demo, and that just sucked. this one doesnt.

too much lag though, even though I think I played on a "real" server( not a home connection). Ill have to try this some more later.

Call of Duty go home. Red Orchestra is just much better.

I had a lot of fun with this, although my frame rate was pretty horrible, and i wasn't really seeing where it was all going. Biggest prob of the game is the lack of "wow" special effects. Every explosion or bullet hit is so modest, especially compared to the over-the-top effects of Call of Duty.

This game is probably what Tribes should've been. Tribes was always too focused on disc-combat, which I believe most players did not find to be fun after a while (it's small fanbase not withstanding). In XMP, the discshooters are the slow moving Gunners, and can be swarmed by shotgun toting Techs.

I dunno if this will really bring U2 success. Afterall, it's pretty complex, and the combat mechanics are very "unique", which is not what most people want. Well, here's hoping mod makers can make a few tweaks to make the combat more mainstream .... i think the rest people will like just fine

In such that it feels more like an effective strategy to use when needed?

I get that feeling with almost everything. At first some things seem too weak/nerfed until you find the right uses for them. In this respect the game is very tight; which is only a good thing.

I think devs are usually way too worried about this kind of thing and tend to overpower weapons and spam up the game just for the initial 'wow' factor, but it usually ruins a game in the long run.

Although I was never a big fan of Tribes, it had quite a large fanbase in it's prime because they toned down everything to be more balanced and tactical while keeping it fast paced. You actually feel like your tactics are worth applying and aren't just a long shot as they are in dm/ctf etc.

A perfect example is the smoke grenades, they actually work in action than just idea.

Heh, a mostly positive thread on Bluesnews?

I'm still trying to find a server with decent ping. I get sub 60 in all other games. Maybe 3 megabit cable not good enough for XMP?

The jump jet I guess is good for clearing the laser fences. Or railings, like right where vehicles start to that door, instead of having to go around. There are ledges that you can only get to with the jet, like in the artifact room.

pretty impressed. Finally we get to see an engine that can do large azz terrains, with interesting design, and DETAIL. I hope all the new games comings devs take notice. Love the smoke grenade `fects. Love pretty well all the weap effects. It was the most fun I had since Trbes actually.

Am I missing something bout jumpjet operating? I was hoping for the ability to use the jump jet thing that was a tad more than the way it is in the demo. Seems almost useless. I know this ain`t Tribes, but surely the jump assist could be better done? In such that it feels more like an effective strategy to use when needed? So far? So good. ;p

"but the game is just an overly complicated version of capture the flag"

yeah, I know where you are coming from. It does seem a tad on the complicated side. CTF done right rocks tho. I remember having my buds TEACH me how to play Tribes 1 online. hehhehhhe And it at the time seemed reallllly over complicated, till ya get it second nature. Then it seemed fast azz. Took awhile for me tho.

OK, I've pretty much gotten comfortable with the game. I love blowing up tanks full of guys with that kickass rocket launcher. Sniping from the mountains is very cool. It's easy to camp inside your base with several laser fence things and turret guns setup with a heavy weapons guy to take out vehicles. Good stuff.
