Gold - OMF: Battlegrounds

One Must Fall Battlegrounds has gone GOLD is the press release announcing that Diversions Entertainment's sequel to the rock-'em sock-'em robots action of One Must Fall 2097 is now complete. The vague word on availability is mid-December, and they outline an incentive they are offering for those who pre-order the game online. Here's a bit of the description of gameplay from the announcement: "One Must Fall: Battlegrounds is a pioneer of the fighting genre, offering an on-line, 3D, multiplayer fighting experience for the PC. Battlegrounds represents a serious change in the philosophy of fighting games. Instead of 2 players facing off in a small space, Battlegrounds features up to sixteen simultaneous players in huge arenas, fighting in team battles or all-out brawls! The goal is to free you, the player, from the restrictions of the past. One Must Fall allows you to fight the way you've always wanted to. Just like your favorite martial-arts movies, you can go toe-to-toe with several opponents, use nearby objects as weapons, and integrate terrain and hazards into your fighting strategy, all while piloting a giant robot."

Will there be a playable demo? I agree the first game was cool, especially multiplayer online (dial-up).

It is just about forever, I know the engine was rewritten at least once, though I believe it was more as the game concept evolved. I've been a limited tester for as long as it's been going, and this game is alot of fun. They've ironed out so many bugs thanks to the LT that I'm amazed more developers don't do the same.

I'll finally be able to use Katana...woohoo!

I went out and got a job because of all the good games that are coming out. Damnit all, I was getting used to being a lazy college student. Oh well, at least I won't have to spend any of my money on DX:IW.

Yes there will be a demo, the game has been in development for 3 years with about 2 or 3 years of engine development before that.

The engine has in fact been rebuilt twice, once from 2D to open GL and once from open GL to Direct3D.

Indeed. I hope this will be as fun as the first one and as fun as that Sega coinop robot arena fighting game which name escapes me at the moment.

I swear that the way that they arrived at OMF 2097 was that at the beginning of development, they simply added 100 years to the current year.

Virtual On? yea that was fun too.

I tested this game a few months back and it was pretty fun the computer controlled bots actually put up a decent fight but I would have liked them to have been more agresive (could have been changed)

I'll be keeping an eye on this one

Protoz, it has been changed. The last few builds I played with had a much better AI, at least in my opinion. They seek out fights instead of heading for pick-ups, which was a problem in earlier builds. They also combo more, which is great (when your not on the recieving end).

This is upsetting though. Once I get the game I'm probably going to destroy a few keyboards-I tend to hit the keys harder when I'm mad.

This game has improved a lot since what most people tried when the first release of the LT (limited test) came out. Gameplay has been improved so standing around results in getting punished (I love thee, retribution) as well as just an increased sense of haste. I've been with this game since its beginning stages (when Jaguar and Force were the ONLY HARs in the game) and have watched it become something I had not expected. As well people didn't give it a fair chance because they're so accustomed to PC games being of the FPS genre they've forgotten how to use keyboard controls (although gamepads are supported as well).

Some of you may be interested to know that the original OMF:2097 has been made freeware. http://www.omf.com/faq/misc.html links to a couple mirrors. Good to play while we wait, neh?
