Saying if all goes well the patch will be released within a week, along with this clarification: "Please keep in mind that development on this patch was locked on November 25th and it was sent for testing. The reason I asked is mainly because I'm one of the people that has 3 different systems running nvidia, 2 of which are still using ti4600s from back when they were the best. Think I just might take a chance and go ATI the next time around.

Game runs smooth as silk on my GeForce4 Ti4600

using the latest drivers prior to the whole Forceware debacle.

my only complaint is the incessant clicking noise when you're in your inventory or the character sheet..etc and I don't really care for the camera controls..but thats minor in my opinion.

Personally, I think Creston's system is just broken. Or Creston is. ;P

I find your lack of faith... disturbing.

Are drivers still a significant problem in new cards?

Yes, but they are a problem whether you get Nvidia OR Ati, so why settle for second best? (Nvidia)

Some people have never had problems with Nvidia, some have never had problems with Ati. I never had problems with my Catalyst 3.6, but when games started requiring higher, it's been a bit of a struggle. However, these 3.9 hotfix drivers that I've installed seem fine.

But similarly, I've had shit with the Detonator series ever after the 27.42.

So, in my opinion, it's shit either way, and if you're going to get shit, you might as well get the raw performance AND better image quality from Ati.

My 9800 PRO rocks.

Patch 1.01 should fix a lot of undisclosed bugs as well. I had the horrible lag/warping problem that was not specifically addressed in the patch but the Beta 1.01 took care of every problem I had with the game.

I'm can barely restrain myself from playing til 2 a.m. on workdays (when I get up at 5 a.m.!). A wonderful game (although with some slight dumbing down due to the Xbox).

Games that I have played on my 9700 Pro and/or 9800 xt without problem: Call of Duty, Gothic II, Half-Life, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Academy, Max Payne 2, Rainbow Six 3, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Wars Knights, Unreal II and Invisible War. Those are just the more recent games, too...

Ray, what do you do for a living that allows you to play so many games? I am jealous.

I can't figure out why people are still considering an nVidia purchase given the current state of things. Aside from brand-loyalty, at least.

Without attempting to start a flame-war (and yet still proceeding to comment on this as if I think that's possible), the way I see it is that (in personal order of importance):

-The ATI hardware properly meets the DX9 specs.
-The ATI hardware performs far better under DX9, see above.
-The ATI hardware is cheaper.
-The ATI hardware has quieter fans.
-The ATI hardware has superior IQ under anti-aliasing.

This 9700Pro is the first non-Mac ATI product I've owned (purchased way back when it was still the lastest and greatest), and it hasn't given me one second of trouble. Drivers have always behaved themselves, etc.

Performance is still outstanding, and I'll be upgrading just about every other part of my system before this thing starts to bottleneck it. This from a card that pre-dates the FX5900 by a good long time.. amazing.

All I want out of a vid-card upgrade is good value for my dollar, so nVidia is always welcome to release something similarly impressive. But they just haven't done that recently, and the bar for me has been set very high indeed by my experience with the 9700Pro.

And KOTOR has me talking to people at work like I'm some sort of Jedi or something. Good thing they decided I was crazy a long time ago.. it is a game of the purest genious. No stability problems here, but I've only just left Taris.

Performance wise, the 5900 is an all around joke. Go play some DX9-class games and watch a 9700 beat the card, much less a 9800 series card.

On the Catalyst issue, I still run the 3.7 on my 9700 Pro and have no problems on my Windows 2000 Pro machine.

As for KotOR, I didn't have any problems at all while playing through. Maybe I just got lucky

New Catalysts are supposed to be out right about now. Wait for rewievs (firing squad, etc. ).

Btw. I bought 9700pro a year ago and until 3.8 i haven't had a single problem, can't say the same thing for all nVidia cards i had before, starting with original GeForce256 - it always took nV about half a year to make drivers that actually worked without crushing my system consistently.

Little off topic, but I'm in the market for a new video card soon, and I've seen several people comment on crappy catalyst drivers and am a little cautious on making the switch to ATI. Are drivers still a significant problem in new cards?

same question actually.
Im thinking of buying either a Geforce 5900 or a Radeon 9800XT.
Are drivers still a big problem for ATI? It's a shame if you can only play a game after new drivers come out.

KotOR was pretty damn fun. Disappointed by the relative linearity, the combat and the endings but the rest of the game made up for it. Bioware's definately on the right track with title's like KotOR, gives me new hope for HotU.

Well, I've just reinstalled some new 3.9 Catalysts (that don't fuck with my browser), so hopefully that fixes it. (I had to install the 3.9 for IW...)

I did notice that KotOR, for some reason, causes massive fragmentation on one of my partitions, to the extent that it took defrag an HOUR to get it all sorted (on a 10 gig partition...). I had been losing performance in the game quite a bit, and after that defrag it did clear up tremendously, so that's quite strange.

Oh well, it's one game where I can overlook the few problems and focus on what's good.

KotOR!!
