Ships Ahoy - T3: War of the Machines

Atari Ships "Terminator 3: War of the Machines" (thanks Frans) is the press release announcing that Judgment Day is nigh, and that this Terminator first-person shooter is now appearing in stores, presumably naked and looking for sunglasses. Here's a bit:
Atari shipped "Terminator®3: War of the Machines(TM)" today to retail stores for the personal computer, a single-player and online multiplayer first-person shooter set in the ravaged battlefields of the Tech Com-versus-SkyNet conflict. Developed by Hungary-based Clever's Games, "Terminator 3: War of the Machines" allows up to 32 players to face off online as either technologically-advanced SkyNet Terminators or battle-hardened Tech Com Special Forces in an epic multi-player struggle for supremacy.

Hmm.. I'll hold off on judgment till I can probably play it though I heard the demo wasn't that hot. Regardless it grabs my interest since it's Terminator but also because of the multiplayer where you can play as a Terminator machine which is intriguing.

Maybe I can try the demo tonight.

For the n00bs that dont know. The demo was an unofficial release as it still had technical issues. If they cleared it up then the game can have good potential.

To be disappointed, if you're a Terminator fan anyways.

There's no single-player game here, it's the same 12 maps used in multi-play (bots vs you + bots), you can do the same thing in the lan setup option only there you have a few extra controls.

Only 12 maps, 3 game modes Termination = BF1942 capture and hold,Team deathmatch, Mission = same as Termination except one team defends other team captures. Some of the maps are worthless as they're not big enough for 4 people let alone 32.

All the content is T3 based, some maps force you to only choose between a T1 or a FK for Terminators.

If you're top dog on the human side you can respawn as Arnold, including poorly implemented voice-overs and everything.

Some keys are hard coded and you can't re-bind them.

The player movement is too slow, Terminators don't have a jump option (I know they did this to make it look cool or something but you can get stuck on the maps)

Overall, if it were a free mod for Half life I'd say good job for a first try, not at all worth $39.99.

It's out already in England. Everyone there who has played it is saying that it obviously wasn't done yet and they shipped it anyway. There are countless bugs in it and the AI and single player are a joke. Hit detection doesn't work half of the time and you can empty your whole ammo supply into someone without killing them. They also need better cheat protection.

It's too bad because this could have been a very fun game. It sounds like Atari has pretty much thrown all integrity straight out the window and are shipping defective unfinished products. I won't be buying any titles from them in the future. I won't even get started on their moronic decision to rename Driver 3 as driv3r. I was looking forward to that as well but not anymore.

I really, REALLY wish they'd do a remake of the orignal Bethesda Terminator game for the PC that came out in 1991. That game was badass, full replica of metro LA, with Morrowind-like openness and you could be either Kyle Reese or the Terminator. Now that technology has caught up it would make a hell of a game. Especially if there was multiplayer! It would be awesome if one person could be the Terminator and he had to hunt down and eliminate Sarah Connor, who is being protected by another player playing as Reese. Sometimes I think game comnpanies completely miss some of the best ideas out there. Shadowrun in a MMO would be another...

Most of SP scrapped for future game? Dec 3, 2003, 13:49

I'm wondering if the reason much of the SP game and cutscenes were scrapped is because of a combination of not being ready and them saving it for their next Terminator title, Redemption.

Looking through the reviews for T3 Rise Of The Machines, their other T3 title for the consoles, I couldn't find even one review which didn't say that it was absolute garbage and that it didn't look ready yet. If I were the rights holder to Terminator, I'd sue Atari for making the franchise look so bad.

No doubt the people who own the Terminator franchise got their money up front, including Arnold.

Interestingly enough they left some of the voice-overs Arnold did for the singleplayer portion in the game.cod file that was originally going to be used in the game, they match up exactly to the video clips I’ve seen for “Redemption”

What’s confusing is I believe Redemption is being produced by another game developer, and only for consoles no less.

Hard to sell future rights Dec 3, 2003, 14:10

With these titles being this pathetic, the right owners to Terminator may have a hard time getting much money by selling the rights to produce games in the future. I know that I won't be buying any games from this franchise in the future. I just hope someone tries to nail them on the false advertising details now that they have yanked the cutscenes.

After hearing more reports from England, it sounds like the full version has all of the same bugs as the demo plus several new ones including lots of lockups. They also forgot that they released in England several days earlier than in the U.S. so nobody could do multiplayer until a day or two ago.

When people look at the dates on the extracted files from the demo .cod file the dates on most files are fairly new. In addition, from what I hear, they may not have beta tested this at all ( other than the "leaked beta").

From the screenshots that I've seen of the maps and from playing the Downtown map, they do look nice though. It looks like there was some decent talent at work but Atari jumped the gun.

The game plays like a really, really bad BF1942 mod, but built on weaker graphics technology.
