Sin But Once

A post on the Shacknews Forums by Ritual's Tom "ParadoX" Mustaine outlines their failed attempt to generate interest in a sequel to Sin, their Quake II-engine shooter, bearing out the Latin proverb: "Indulgent gods, grant me to sin once with impunity. That is sufficient. Let a second offence bear its punishment." (thanks World of Quotes). Here's the deal:
We were working Sin2, but there was no publisher interest in today’s game market. Even have a really slick demo in a next generation technology (beyond Quake3.)

Maybe it can happen in a few years when the next round of "resurrect old game franchises" mentality resurfaces.

Until that day....

SiNs multiplayer still stands as the best and second longest running game I've ever played, even more than DOOM since I couldn't afford DWANGO and long distance phone calls to play all the time.

UT was the longest running game I've played and I keep thinking, with all this focus on realism (since I've moved on to MOHAA (team deathmatch)but not willingly), something has been lost along the way.

I don't know what it is but it's gone.

On a side note I need to vent (some more) : Screw this 'todays market' bullshit. Who the hell has the right to tell me what type of game I want. Its a damn shame that games like SiN can't compete with today's scripted shooters and realist online play. I like unrealistic online play and I liked SiN's DM and CTF modes. I liked all of that. But today its all about realism....

Screw realism.

I'm not saying old skool players like myself are better than today's players cuz I'm not. I'm just saying I don't necessarily want what 'today's market' dictates. And I don't like being told what I want. And I wish the game makers would take a chance on making games that deviate from today's trends and push toward sthe style of play that captured a good majority of today's players.

And I don't think I'm alone.

Glad you got it working. I'd love to see a SiN revival.
There are two servers that I know of.
SinPod
65.168.21.251:22450
And my Temp Server Warrior's SiN World.
65.29.218.52:22450

Hope that helps.

'd play some sin if my cd wasnt a 3.5 hour drive away and i didn't have finals

I have finals too, which is why I decided to take the plunge and give SiN another try. Ran into some problems though:

1st problem:

Installer won't install, halts with message "DirectX 6 is for Windows 95" Apparently Windows XP doesn't count as 95 or greater. Had to copy the contents of the CD onto my hard drive manually.

-----------

2nd problem:

Go to get the patch from Ritual's site, the version I have on my CD is v1.03, but there are no patches from v1.03 to any other version (even though there are versions to patch to v1.03)

-----------

3rd problem:

So I then guess, well, there is a v1.01 to 1.11 patch, I'll take a chance with this. Problem is all the links are bad links to 3ddownloads.com. Finally managed to hunt up a valid link on 3DGamers.com (what a great site :)) And on there they noted that the 1.01 to 1.11 patch is also for v1.03 users as well.

-----------

4th problem (and I still haven't even tried running the game yet):

Actually there were no more problems, finally got the game working. wOOt!

Now if only they'd cancel final exams......

It's definately a shame ..... I really enjoyed SiN ... in fact I had more fun playing it(once it was patched) than I did HL ... I wouldn't necessarily say it was a better game ... but it was more MY type of game

Like #38 said earlier ... it had many innovations that have become standard in FPS's today ... and Spry(Behind Zee Bookcase) is still the most fun I have ever had playing Deathmatch

I certainly hope that someday Ritual gets "do-over" and that SiN2 is the commercial success that SiN wasn't.

Many games (not all) live or die by what the online community does do, or decides not to do with it. HL is the most played game on the Internet, but if you go gamespy.com/stats and look at the stats and drill down on the stats link, Almost all HLr's are playing CS or DoD. The MOD community made HL into the spectacle it is now.

SiN did not have anything like that for a following. Whether it was because of the bugs, publisher, timing, or whatever, it didn't have the online following.

The game stood out enough to garner praise, the online reviews and PC Game Mag reviews mostly rated it high for so many things.

There are occasions where games are critically acclaimed but do poorly on the store shelves, and then there are games like matrix that receive BAD reviews but sell mass quantities. Some of it is no doubt a bit of a gamble.

The length of the comments here and on other news sites shows there there is some interest. I'd like to see SiN2 happen, but I'm sure others could care less.

The game WAS a huge influence on my ONLINE Experience, it made me a Internet 3D shooter junky. I got a new PC with that game in mind, I got high speed Internet access because of that game. I'd like to see a balls to the wall, no holds bar SiN2 come out and let the chips fall where they may. I think the chances are good as long as the developers are innovative and creative like they were with the original.

There is definitely a reason the big boys (id software) say things like 'when it's done'. So I'll have to wait, but I think the wait would be worth it, and I bet many of you would agree with me after the final product came out. The Ritual guys have talent!

I might actually agree with that. I think people remember it fondly due to the SP experience...

I think people are giving Sin a little too much credit. This is one of my favorite PC games of all time but the single player really did lack in alot of areas. All bugs aside the animation wasn't very great, some of the levels didn't flow so great, and some of them were just plain boring and/or frustrating. However I never played single fps anyway I loved this game for the excellent mutiplayer level design. I played this night after night until my eyes would give out. However I don't think I ever even got half way through the single player. I have a computer sciene final tomorrow wtf am I doing posting on this site. I am gonna go read about treeMaps, treeSets, HuffMan Trees, HashTables, Red/Black trees, DequeueLists, and a great mutitude of sorting algorithms.

SiN would go up to 1600 x 1200 in OpenGL (beautiful btw). But, Wages of SiN (WoS) would not go up that high within the in-game settings/menus.

WoS can go up to that resolution if you edit the config file. Set your SiN video resolution to 1600 x 1200. Then, check the video setting number in the SiN config file (it's a number like 1 - 8). Match that number in the WoS config file for the video setting and it will set the resolution to 1600 x 1200 for WoS (even thou in the in-game "settings" it does not say the actual resolution = 1600 x 1200).

Sin DM/CTF was the last time since Q1CTF that multiplayer gaming really was a balls-to-the-wall rush. The locational damage allowed pretty much any weapon to be balanced and the runes were second to none (except for maybe the Creeper mod for Q1). That map where you were rat-sized in the library was intense as hell, and there was nothing better than chasing down a flag carrier with the deathquad and returning it for a cap just when the rune claimed your last health points. For those lucky enough to play the CTF mod for the expansion pack, CTF on the back of speed bikes took it to another level too.

I'll admit- the SP game got somewhat tedious, but it did mix in the occasional stealth mission and the sniper rifle implementation was top-notch. I don't think HL stole its thunder as much as Unreal though...if I remember correctly, Unreal came out within 1-2 months of the SiN demo and looked prettier, so people ran to that instead. I have yet to finish Unreal (and it took me 5 years to finish HL), but SiN stuck with me for quite a while.

I just played in on my WinXP AMD 1800+ with a Geforce 4200 64MB 8x Card. I had go into the properties in the icon and put it in win2k compatibility mode, then change the default video settings after that, it worked fine. REMEMBER, XP wasn't even thought of when this game came out.

Well, I turned all the video options WAY up and had a blast.

Got a server up at 65.29.218.52:22450 Warrior's SiN World if you feel nostalgic!?!

What some ppl fail to realize is that it was NOT Ritual that made the decision to ship SiN to store shelves with the bugs. It was ACTIVISON.

Uhm, does anyone actually believe otherwise?

I'll make you a guarantee. If you haven't played it. Find it in a bargain bin. Patch it to 1.11 (See www.Ritualistic.com) Although not as graphically up to date as todays games-you'll have a BLAST at singleplyer still today.

Hmm, well maybe I'll try it again, but the last system I tried the game on was a P233 (or was it my Cel 600?), Voodoo3, SBLive XGamer, with the 1.11 patch, and the game still didn't play right (if I remember correctly, the sound was screwed). My best friend tried the game not too long ago (like within the last year) on an even better system and had similar problems. So I don't think we can quite say that the patch fixed everything.

As for all the people who are talking about how the demo should be released to generate publicity, how about this for an idea (even though it'll never happen): Why not release the full version original game as freeware? After the recent successes of this with the original Grand Theft Auto & more recently Hidden & Dangerous, I think this'd be a great way to generate some great publicity for the boys @ Ritual.

Of course, if I'm not alone in not ever being able to get this game to run, this plan just might backfire....

SiN and Wages of SiN were in my category of best games ever made

..I totally agree. SiN's gameplay was creative, interactive and , most important - FUN. (The underwater level did kinda drive me crazy, tho)
Anyway, I remember the graphics at the time were pretty cool & colorful, if not cartoony. I was absorbed enough to play it through (2) times. It was one of the few FPS games I've played thru more than once...

I liked the feel of the weapons, the gore factor, and the secrets, among many other aspects.
