Star Wars Battlefront Unveiled

Star Wars Battlefront confirmed on GameSpot (thanks Frans) has confirmation of plans for Battlefield 1942-style first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe called Star Wars Battlefront. They have no details on the game, which they say will be officially announced early next year, though they refute rumors that this would be a PS2-only offering, saying the game will be released for the PC, the PS2, and the Xbox.

As for lucas? He should have been assasinated as soon as he even suggested Ewoks.

For the record, I have a poll up on my website asking who should direct the next SW film if someone were to assasinate Lucas. At the moment Mel Brooks is ahead of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielburg.

Battlefront has the potential to be the game which restores our faith in LucasArts. It also has the potential to suck big time.

Wasn't there a game called Republic Commando in the works? Your chance to be a clone ARC trooper... it's been quite a while since that was announced. I remember a movie clip that looked pretty good. For PC and console IIRC. Wonder if it's the same game or a different one...

I'd rather see some new properties created. I really can do without Grim Fandango 2 at this point. It's like someone going back and doing a sequel to Citizen Kane or Casablanca. Plus, Escape from Monkey Island was half-assed compared to it's brethren and Full Throttle 2 looked to disappoint.

As far as the Star Wars stuff is concerned, as long as it ends up being top-notch stuff (which doesn't seem too likely) I don't mind. Curious as to how this'll turn out since I've been dreaming about this since forever.

...I guess I'll wait for their Star Wars adventure game now.

With the exception of George Lucas(before the tragic loosing of his chin/neck in a chin accedent)
I whish all these people had died at birth before they had a chance to get to a microphone. Its like a who's who of sucks ass. As for lucas? He should have been assasinated as soon as he even suggested Ewoks.

Grim Fandango? Well, Full Throttle 2... but oh wait, I guess that's a BAD IDEA... let's cancel it.

Ahhh. Grim Fandango was a wonderfully creative game. Haven't seen anything like that in a long time.

my big question is why is everyone so suprised? lucas arts has been doing this for years. why make a new grim fandango when you can start your game with scrolling credits.

it's kind of sad, because it almost makes me hate the entire franchise even though i love those original 3 three movies. george lucas gets grouped with michael jackson, rod stewart, paul mcartney, elton john, billy joel as a celebrtiy i wish had died tragically at his prime so that we could remember their work for what it was and not what it has become.

God knows there aren't enough "me, too" products on the market with SW licensing.

IMHO, Star Wars licensing has been in "version of" syndrome all along. X-Wing and its bretheren were their version of dogfigting flight sims, Dark Forces was their version of a FPS, Rebellion was their version of Master of Orion, Rebel Assault was their version of a rail shooter, Force Commander was their version of a 3D RTS, Galactic Battlegrounds was their version of a 2D RTS, etc. To me, the Star Wars license has never been original, they've always taken existing formulas and dropped in their properties.

But yeah, lately they have been more guilty of the "drop in and go" syndrome. Like when they did Demolition, which was Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense with SW characters, which wasn't a very good game to begin with. Galactic Battlegrounds might as well have been an Age of Empires mod, but it worked anyway. If they do Battlefield 1942 with Star Wars characters, it could work. After all, a bunch of amateurs did Battlefield 1942 with US/Iraqi conflict characters and it worked.

Besides - think of blowing away the Jar Jar bots over and over.

If its coming out on the PS2 then thats a bad sign... XBOX would be a different story. Porting a game from the PS2 is like dressing a retard in a tux.

Hmm, it sounds like this mod: http://www.galactic-conquest.net/ ... Could be good. GC mod isn't great because it is new.

Hhahaha notice the name "Battlefront" hahaha this sooo smells like a ripp off, except that it's going to lbow cause consoles are involved and just cant see them pushing real battles anywhere like Battlefield 1942 does.

Btw there's a free mod for BF1942 called Galactic Conquest, so why bother with this anyway?>

That's it, LucasArts - prostitute out the SW franchise even more. God knows there aren't enough "me, too" products on the market with SW licensing.

*sigh*
*rant mode ON*

I remember the good ol' days, when LucasArts actually made ORIGINAL titles (they started with a bang, way back in the mid 80's). Games like Kronis Rift, Rescue on Fractalus, the X-Wing and TIE-Fighter series of games, all of their graphical adventure games - all of which were top-shelf material; and all of which pushed technology, story-telling, and gaming in new ways.

Over the years, I've applauded them branching out into new areas - and certainly they didn't invent the flight-sim genre with X-Wing; or the FPS genre with the original "Dark Forces" game... But at least back then they'd incorporate new features, or have great stories, or SOME unique characteristic. The studio USED to be a siren-signal for creative designers and storytellers. The only game that has pushed a genre or been a blockbuster in recent years, IMHO, is KOTOR. Raven has done its solid (if predictable) job on all of the Jedi Knight titles - but at their heart they're still just FPS's with a few fancy sword-moves.

At the risk of being an ass (and despite the fact that I still love the original SW movies), I really wish that most of the SW-themed games would stop selling. That way, perhaps LucasArts will re-adjust BACK to being a creative powerhouse. Of course, that's probably just wishful thinking at this point...

Not sure how this is going to shape up.
