BF1942 to Bust Punks

The Battlefield 1942 Website (thanks Frans) has word that punks beware, Even Balance's anti-cheat software is going back in time to World War II. Here's the word:
In response to the #1 request from the community, DICE & EA are proud to announce the inclusion of anti-cheat measures in the next patch for Battlefield 1942. The Battlefield team is committed to providing an exploit-free gaming environment for members of our community. Our goal is to have measures in place which address both current and future cheats. As such, after researching existing anti-cheat programs, we've determined that Punkbuster™ suits our purposes perfectly. We'll keep everyone updated as to our progress. For now, we have successfully integrated Punkbuster into the upcoming 1.6 patch and we're in the process of testing it.

Maybe now is a good time to pick up a copy of BF1942 since I have yet to play it.

Yes, you must try BF! And Desert Combat also!

If you decide you like Desert Combat, give me a hollar at www.mpclans.com and I'll make room for you in my clan.

I despise cheaters. I had to kick one of my Squad Leaders from the clan yesterday for cheating (she denied it the whole time too):(. It is almost impossible to verify cheaters on DC right now. I had to actually use a cheat to prove she was cheating...which is why I can't wait for PB to be implemented into BF. It'll be MUCH easier to prove they're cheating then!

Hey Blizzard how about yall get a clue and implement punk buster or something like it for Warcraft III and your other games. Especially for maphack, cause WHAT GOOD IS A STRAT GAME WITHOUT THE STRATEGY???? Blizzard if you get rid of maphacking I'll buy your WC3 expansion, but right now I don't even want to play WC3.

Yeah, I play Enemy Territory all the time and you don't even notice that it is there until you join a non-PB enabled server and see a "difference" in how people play.

I play DC and never had an issue hackers. Most hackers are n00bs and arent really good at large games since they can get shot at from many different directions rather easily. Plus the hacks arent even that great or useful in BF1942 from what I've seen.

I belive you are incorrectly informed here.

When punkbuster was working the amount of cheaters was very low.

The problem was, the punkbuster team was working as a 3rd party, Valve ingored em completely, so why should they have helped out someone that doesnt give a rats ass about it apparently (according to the interview with the pb team about it valve later pretty much copied their technology, this is prolly why I have as much respect for valve as an average american has for osama)

Either way, when a game fully supports pb(ie when the devs do) then it works great and fawless, I can bring examples from Raven shield where I have yet to encounter a single problem with it, or its updating.
Also you can have it on safely all the time, when you join a non pb server it will just tell you that the server doesn't use pb and let you continue anyways.
Very nice and simple to use.

And if you ask if it works, then yes it does, even private cheats(cheats used by a very small group of people) don't last very long and the team is constantly working on new methods and countering new cheats every day (hey its their job and they do it right).

So I have no problems with it, great tool and keeps the cheaters at bay.

I play both Quake 3 and RTCW:ET and I've never had a problem with punkbuster. Sometimes Quake 3 will take like 3 mintues to update it's datafile, but other than that, it's np.

Personally, I can't wait. The cheats the little weasles use are not readily noticiable, like enemies being shown on thier maps, or no fog. I've notice a couple of times someone taking way too much damage. I play daily, and you can tell.

Hrm... I've never really considered that there may be cheats in use in BF42. I'm very hesitant to accuse anyone of cheating, since I'm certainly not the greatest player in the world. My scores average middle-of-the-pack with an occasional "medal" score. I've noticed, however, that on several occasions I've shot people from ranges of less than 20 feet square in chest with a 6 to 10 round burst from a BAR or equivalent, and they just casually capped me with one round when I'm at full health and strafing. I know that the BF42 code has damage reduced to a somewhat less than realistic level for gameplay purposes, but I just can't see someone taking that much damage and then beating me when I'm full up on health. Especially when a tank just exploded right next to him and had to have given some splash damage.

Overall, I favor anti-cheat code, even if it incoveniences me slightly, as even so-called "benign" cheats could quickly sour an honest player on the entire experience. I can certainly see where even simple cheats like having enemies visible on the map would help tremendously in scoring, especially when flying aircraft or on dense urban maps like Stalingrad.

GMAN-- I play frequently too. And now that you mentioned it I was killed a couple of times by what seemed to be one shot from a medic... but I can't say he was cheating.

Yesterday I killed a dude who was prone in a building, his feet were sticking out through a wall so I shot them 'til he was dead. Was that cheating? Or exploiting?

it was a bit of a hassle because then, you had to have it running in the background before launching into a game

isn't that the way most anti-cheat programs work?

Well, I guess so, but with first versions of Punkbuster you had to run punkbuster manually, minimize it, then find and connect to your game. Now, it is just launched by the game when you connect to the game. Small difference, but it was an extra step before.

I play Wolfenstein: Enemy Terrority a LOT. Punkbuster has never been a problem for me in that game. I don't even know it's there. From what I understand people could still use a new cheat, but they will be kicked or banned by PB after a few minutes.

Some time ago Punkbuster was used (or was even initially built) for use with Counter-Strike. Considering that punkbuster is no longer used with CStrike, its fair to say that I think the cheaters won that battle. But, more to the point, it was a bit of a hassle because then, you had to have it running in the background before launching into a game. The process has been streamlined a great deal with more recent implmentations and I would agree that it now operates smoothly behind the scenes.

I've had two experiences with Punkbuster, Q3A and R6: Raven Shield. Q3A was a pain in the ass, but once it updated it was ok (the updating part just took forever). I know in Raven Shield there's a checkbox to turn Punkbuster on or off, but the program has to be restarted for it to take effect. Not really a problem since every server out there has it on.

The only reason I even played Raven Shield recently is because it came with my Audigy 2 ZS, now I've just gotta save up for those purty Logitech Z-680 speakers. Two speakers hooked up to a card like this is criminal, I know.

Maybe now is a good time to pick up a copy of BF1942 since I have yet to play it.

If it's anything like the way PB is incorporated into America's Army, you have nothing to worry about. It's integrated directly into the engine (no 3rd party program), and you just click a box on the server browsing screen to enable/disable PB.

I have had an issue in the past as well... in quake 3 and RTCW. It has been a while (a year) since I fired either one up. So maybe the bugs have been worked out? Although, I am apprehensive about Punkbuster as well.

My issue with PB comes from the fact that I had problems connecting to servers because my files differed from the servers. When I know for a fact, that didn't have any mods or cheats in my game folder. In all it made finding a game more difficult.

To be honest, I haven't noticed any cheating on the BF servers that I play on. That isn't to say it is not happening, but I don't notice it...

I hope this transition goes smooth...
