Spaceships Ahoy - X²: The Threat

The X Homepage (thanks Frans) confirms reports sent along by a couple of readers by announcing that X²: The Threat has shipped to stores, and that Egosoft's space sim sequel is now available in stores in North America and Australia. The game's European release is scheduled for February 6, 2004. The official press release offers more details:
PARKVILLE, Md. (December 1, 2003) – Enlight, a leading entertainment software developer and publisher, announced today the highly anticipated space simulation game X²: The Threat has shipped to retail stores across North America for the holidays.

Under development for two years, X²: The Threat has received numerous praise for its stunning in game graphics and open-ended gameplay. GameSpy said in their preview, "Overall, though, X2 could turn out to be one of the truly great space sims, ready to take its place among the Wing Commanders, Freelancers, and Independence Wars of the genre. The visuals alone may well carry this game to greatness."

In addition to the featuring graphics and in depth gameplay, X²: The Threat exhibits an amazingly open-ended X-universe that is twice the size featured in its predecessor, X: Beyond the Frontier. "The sheer size of the universe and the astounding number of ships to fly, solar systems to visit and commodities to buy blew me away. X2 makes you feel like you're a part of a living, breathing cosmos," said Avault's Dustin Arient in his first look at the epic space simulation.

"Fans of Elite and Privateer have long been awaiting a follow-up title and we are excited to bring them X2: The Threat," said Paul Lombardi, CEO of Enlight Interactive. "With its striking graphics, open-ended gameplay and state-of-the-art engine, X2: The Threat will appeal to both space simulation fans and mass market consumers this holiday season."

Published by Enlight Interactive in North America and Canada, X²: The Threat is available on the Windows PC and is priced at $39.99 (U.S.). For additional information visit http://www.x2-game.com/.

Here’s my take on the game.

The game feels like a mixture of Privateer (for the trading aspects) and Earth and Beyond (for the combat aspects, and without real players). I've not progressed far enough to be too critical of the game. What I've experience is fun, albeit slow.

The game is visual eye-candy, which surprised me because large developers usually do games with this level of quality. All in-game information and communication is audio with optional sub-titles. Cinematic and cut-scenes use the game’s engine, which is lovely when dealing with space, but sucked with character animation. Sound is decent and appropriate. Music had an electronic sound that sounded appropriate, though I long for a space game that has an orchestrated score (not withstanding Star War: Galaxies).

AI seems decent. Enemy Pirate’s dock with stations then left a short time later and headed for another station or jump gate. It’s refreshing to see NPCs that appear to think and act for them. Probably one my biggest gripes I have are the controls. Maybe it’s my ship, or my input device, but controls were sluggish in a firefight. I got the impression the pirate was playing me then just blasted my ass.

Does Freelancer have real-time shadows? Bump-mapping on ALL surfaces? No. X2 does.

"If it had freelancer's graphics then i'd be sold."

You can bring the resolution down a bit or turn down the texture graphics to bring the graphics down to the level of freelancer, i doubt that is what you want! I Think you meant to say if it had the same art direction as freelancer or the same style you'd be sold!

On a personal Note i do like the graphics, at least in this game some alien ship do look alien!!!!

nice review david.
i'd still like to try a demo of this first though, is there one out yet?

I just have a feeling i dont like the graphics.

If it had freelancer's graphics then i'd be sold.

Anyone actually have a copy of X2 yet? I think it comes out either today or tomorrow.

If you read the whole thread you'd know that it has been out in Australia for almost two weeks now, and I've already written up an in-depth review.

The star forge wasn't too difficutly. it was sort of funny. because half way through playing it I was like shit man I"m getting tired cause they are throwing all these guys at you and my brain needed a break. It was a really rewarding level once you got done with it. just because of the ammount of enemy's you had to face.

yeah some times it looks good. but most of the time it looks not so great. imo....

Shit, if I could get it running, I'd play the ORIGINAL Elite, wireframes and all, again, and be happier'n a pig-in-mud.

Can't figure out why everyone complains about the Star Forge being so hard though. I was finally happy that I got some decent challenge out of the game with those hordes of Dark Jedi and Elite Sith Troopers.

On an actual on topic post. I tried out X2. and to be honest. it just didn't feel right to me. I mean the way the weapons shoot, the way the ship moves. yeah some times it looks good. but most of the time it looks not so great. imo....

In a way it was a waste. but it was because half way through I had full dueling.... and only intended to use one lightsaber. but then I just had the urge to sort of use 2 and try and get it to have a better chance to hit and really good damamge. so yeah. Oh I got a really good crystal from Juhani's "old friend" on the sith academy planet. if you kill him that is... some people seem tot hink you can't get a hold of juhani if you go the dark path. but I was able to. i mean yeah. you do eventually kill her . but yeah. what a fucking awesome game. I recommend it to all.

sheesh! yes, Kotor is a great game (finished it with dark male, light male, and working on light woman) But this thread has indeed been hijacked =)

About X2, it's getting better, played it a little longer. I'm taking a pause from the story (I can find my dad later)
and getting rich. Man I'm gonna get those big capital ships soon enough and I WILL RUEL TEH UNIVERZE!!...*cough*

Ah, Doug I wish I woulda found that robe... I busted through those turrets because I was getting my ass handed to me by the waves of apprentices and didn't wanna fuck around Also why would you want to try and max out dueling feat AND double weapons? Isn't that a waste? It wasn't too hard to beat Malak with my 2 sabres. There were a couple crystals I found inside mined pillars in the temple that really strengthened them too.

Hello? Is this the FBI? Yes, I'd like to report a hijacked thread, please... Yes, a bunch of Star Wars nerds came in and hijacked our Elite geek thread. They just busted into the bus, took the keys away, and started laughing at us. Please send the Hostage Rescue Team and kill them all.

OK, THAT was classic.

Gee, someone's breaking the 11th commandment!

Actually I was going to post a comment to that effect but your sig made me feel a hal-ar-i-ous comment (the dashes mean that it wasn't, btw) was in order. I'm sure there must be a KotOR forum around somewhere. Or at least a KotOR thread here...

For whatever reason, Carth is God at distracting the enemies. His attacks rock the house compared to the lightsabers, and having two of them and using the advanced multi-shot (or whatever it is) does make the NPCs pause for that needed second before keeling over dead.

I TOLD you Carth was the shiznit! Now get the man some decent toys, ignore his whining (unless you play female, in which case you can actually make him squirm quite amusingly), and watch him clean up.

Edit : Best thread summary EVAR! Woot Ray!

Edit 2 (SPOILER!) :

Actually, the Star Forge doesn't just make robes for darksiders, it ALSO makes robes for lightsiders, which are just as good as Revan's robes, although they make you look like some rather peculiar BulletProof Monk or something.
Also, 25-29 to hit and 15-33 damage per lightsaber? Doug, go through it again, both those numbers can AT LEAST be 10 higher!
