FPS Games & Minors

Bay Area Lawmaker Wants to Keep Minors from Buying Violent Video Games (thanks HomeLAN Fed) has word of an effort in the Bay Area to curtail minors' access to violent video games that would classify all first-person shooters as adult only by their very nature. Here's a bit:
Assemblyman Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) plans to introduce legislation this week that would keep minors from purchasing first shooter videogames, where players need to kill in order to advance.

“These first person shooter videogames really teach kids how to stalk and how to maim and torture and kill people,” Yee said. “That’s not what we should be doing for our kids.”

Yee is also a child psychologist, and he said, it is time to “draw the line.”

The bill would penalize retailers and other stores that sell the games to anyone under the age of 17. A second bill would require video game retailers to separate children's games from adult games.

I'm all for this if it would cut down on the 12yr olds in CS - except it's not enforceable, and parents don't care anyway.

The article doesn't mention the ill-informed wankers political leaning (not that I really care what party they belong to, all these pricks are the same) Besides my post was sarcastic, not factual. Maybe you should run for office, you certainly seem qualified on the wanker quota.

A) I recalled his campaign ad's mentioning his political affiliation. Seeing your comment I did a google search to double check: http://www.smartvoter.org/2002/11/05/ca/state/vote/yee_l/
Low and Behold, Democrat and his political philosophy is more liberal than your average Dem at that.

Blaming it on video games proves that humans are taking a step back in evolution.

Oh wait, we accomplished that when we allowed people to sue over coffee that was...*gasp*....hot.

BLOODY HELL! I hate when people try and do this. I understand why they do this but their reasoning is incredibly stupid.

Videogames do not teach people to do anything. What they may (maybe) do is desensitize people to violence. But desensitization to violence is caused by many things other than videogames. Movies, TV, music, books and our culture in general desensitize. Plus, humans are twisted animals. Even if they take away everything that has violence in it, humans will still be violent. Nature itself makes us violent. Violent urges are probably still left over from our days as hunter-gatherers. There's no way to solve the problem.

These neurotic assclowns say that videogames teach people how to kill. Hell, I can think of dozens of ways of killing people with various household objects and I guarantee I didn't learn how to by playing videogames.

People just try to blame violence on just one thing. Videogames. Violent movies. Maryiln Manson. There is no one party to blame for ANYTHING. There is no magic bullet, no specific culprit. It's a conspiracy of factors, working hand-in-hand.

And since when do people magically become able to withstand gore and violence when they turn 17? I'm quite sure Mr. Yee has seen some R-rated violent movies in his day. He's probably even played a videogame. Did these movies turn him into a human killing machine? No. It's not going to be any different with kids.

GOD, I am so sick of these retards living in glass houses throwing stones. If you have a healthy relationship with your childeren they will be just fine. Stop pointing fingers and look in the mirror.

Its more about how kids/people process information. Its certianly possible without any supervision to process morality, a kid could think its ok to act out violently when not threatened.
This argument has been used with books, moives, music and now games, yet all of these are refelections of our socities of humanity.
Of course a kid could, just like a kid only exposed to religious zealots would think its ok to kill Medical Dr.'s here in the US, or Israeli's if they Muslems, its all around us, of course only in the extreme fringes. So it is possible.
The most important aspect is education from a social/moral (that doesnt mean religion) context.
If in our society, parnets are too overwhelmed trying to survive then its up to the government to fund educational awarness for kids.
I could see it for kids under 12, but it get touchy after that 17 is almost old enough to be sent to war to kill people for REAL.
Thou it is incressingly tougher, exponentialy the longer socieity waits to teach these things like morals.
Of course many parnets say they dont want thier kids learning morals form the goverment (ie schools) but it is becoming extremely obvious that many (certianly not all) parents arent/cant/wont teach there kids. Even if its only 25% that translates to huge numbers.

yeah but those problems are going to be a lot harder to fix than simply just making gaming the scapegoat *again* besides its popular to blame games for societys woes and sure wont hurt him come election time

Just this past couple years, a group of teenagers, who were all big fans of GTA, went on a large spree where they murdered 5 people, held up dozens of people at gun point, and so forth.

If we were to dig a little deeper, I think we'd find that those kids had MUCH bigger real life problems than a fondness for GTA.

Oh, and from the article you linked to:

"Baehr also reminded parents that there are plenty of other videogames, including Christian ones, for children and teenagers that have little or no violence and that certainly don't have any sexual content or nudity in them."

Gotta love how these Christian groups always seem to think that sexual content or nudity are much worse than violence. And yet they have the nerve to lecture others about priorities.

"God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men!"

Anyway, its quite beyond me why the hell the US hasn't already enforced this law already. Other countries have had this kind of legislation for years.

That's not really true. Why do little kids do things like talk to the TV then?
What the hell kind of kid talks to the TV? I don't know a kid on earth that talks to the TV.
I know ADULTS that talk to the TV, however (when watching football).

Some types of violent crime has apparently diminished while other forms of it are on the rise (murder down, assault and rapes up).
According to who? All sociological studies I've ever seen, state that crime among minors has gone down since the 80's.

Violent media desensitizes people to violence. They're much more inclined to use violence to resolve conflict than not.
False. How someone reacts to violence does not determine if someone will commit violence. There are no social or personal consequences to not caring about violence. However, everyone knows the real consequences to violence. They do not get programmed to ignore these obvious consequences through media brainwashing. Such a notion is absurd: if it were true, we'd be a NATION of killer zombies.

We've already heard from the peanut gallery, so let's go to the pro's. Here's a link to an APA article.
The APA deals with controlled lab research, not the real world. You need to look at the real statistics.

step 1) do not allow retailers to sell games that have a rating higher than the age of the buyer. (its supposed to be like this already, but it still happens.)
The problem is that this is illegal and discriminatory. They don't even do this with movies.

step 2) if a parent is buying the game for the kid, TELL THEM ABOUT THE RATING!
That won't work either. The parents are too stupid and apathetic to care about what the rating means. Hence why the kids end up going on killing sprees, with or without video games.

Is this the part where everyone freaks out about how an 8 year old should be able to buy Soldier of Fortune 2 without anyone else knowing or caring?
What I'd like to know is where the 8 year old got the money to buy SoF2. Last I checked, 8 year olds don't have jobs.
