I just get a blank screen when I start it up...

Found a solution! I had DirectX 9.0a installed. Updating to DirectX 9.0b seems to have fixed it.

I'd like to retract my previous statement about this being a good game. After giving this demo a good, hard look I can say that this game will definately be passed up. The lack of localized damage is criminal, the performance is piss-poor, and the fact that it just oozes 'console port' is just plain wrong. It has all been uninstalled, and I will not even try an updated demo unless it gets much better reviews.

I am not impressed. I would expect the sequel to a game to be *better* (unlike in cinema), and yet the interface (particularly the inventory) is far less intuitive than the original game and left me swearing at the game on multiple ocasions. The new HUD, though, is fine with me.

right, well, hmm, after I put it at 640x480, and edited default.ini with the keys i wanted, and got used to the fact I had to go to the controls screen and press Home to reload the default.ini keys each time I travelled somewhere or loaded a save game...after all of that..I actually enjoyed it. Like many things, I'd recommend trying it, rather than forming an opinion based on internet forums, as we all know what they're like. The lighting, from my point of view of being a 3D'er for a living, is not shite and has some nice touches, like the blue inside the bins.

It could do with some polishing though. How a demo got out where the keys/res don't save is beyond me. And then there are the AIs walking through dynamic-things [maybe not easy to fix...], and my gun going into the wall. And the fact that when you pick up a body, it feels like you're on the set of the 1987 wunderfilm Mannequin. All we need is that "Nothing's gonna stop us" tune....But, overlook this, and the game is fun. Definitely kept me awake until 554am.

in the small print:
And the cats make good little cat noises.
And one of them kept playing with the bin.
And there's a decapitated cat.
And I'll let someone else put the flame thrower on them to see if they run around.

I thought it was fun, lots of different ways to play, seems like everything was interactive, actually finished this demo, unlike first deus ex. UI is unintuitive, but I got the hang of it. Weird thing is everytime i died or moved from one location to another it totally lost all my movement configuration customization. Fortunately there's not that many keys to customize, but still, wtf?

did play like a slideshow though, dunno whats up with that, except my comp's old, but it runs ut2k3 just fine. Whatever, i wasn't impressed at first, but this demo's making me reconsider buying this. First Deus ex did nothing for me, this one's fun. Go figure, but thats my opinion.

Well, from the sound of it, you're not missing much by not playing the demo. I havn't tried it either, but I'm not in a hurry to do so.

I swear, I am about this close to just blowing $3,000 over at Alienware's site...

Bah, you don't have to do that. Just a simple Mobo/CPU upgrade would probably do the trick.. judging by your previous comments about it.

Ok guys, I got a problem and I'de much appreciate it if anyone could help me out.

Rictor, did you try re-downloading the demo? It sounds like yours is corrupt. I know you got farther the first time, but that doesn't mean it isn't corrupt.

As for the demo, I have yet to try it myself, but from everyone's replies, it doesn't sound as good as many of you expected. I'm curious to see what Creston thinks about it. ION Storm could probably fix the UI in a patch, but hopefully they they can get the performance up. It must be their problem since it runs slow on nVidia and ATi.. well, slow considering since the graphics aren't the best.

I'm sorry, but this demo was just not my cup of tea. In fact it has me really upset.

i can come to one and only one conclusion: as a demo, the deus ex 2 demo released today sucks. Nothing to it. No explanation. Plain and simple it stunk.

Poor frame-rate, lackluster eyecandy, poor overall presentation, just doesn't sit well with me.

Heck I rarely get motion sickness, but after 15~25 minutes with this game I got it.

MY system doesn't suck either. FX5900+2.1Ghz athlon ain't to shabby a rig. I hate this demo, wished I never would have played it. Bah, Bah, Bah. Ruined my gaming night. Bleh, time to law down for a bit. Booooo, Booooo, booooo

Guys, lets not try to lose all hope for 2003.
There are two more oppurtunities for a good pc game year
1) Half Life 2
2) Doom 3

and there still is that shred of hope that maybe the retail release might fix the problems - though I'm not holding my breathe

edit: and I'm guessing that the biggest reason for the slowdowns is the lighting engine? its not even that impressive, I remember Silent Hill 2 doing a VERY awesome job with lighting at no performance hit.

Hey, Warren, this is about as "streamlined" as a brick wall. I can live with the single ammo type. Hell, I'm willing to stretch my imagination for the benefit of the doubt or something. But these kinda slowdowns are BS.

Oh yeah, I haven't seen anyone around these parts mention the lack of LOCALIZED DAMAGE. That's right. No head shots. Who's gonna say it wasn't a console port, now?

2003 was the biggest let down in PC gaming in a long time. DX2 had a chance to be a huge hit, now it's just another failed wannabe.

Boy what a disapointment. I don't understand how something that looks so crappy and fuzzy could run so god damned slow.

Max Payne 2 looked so much better and ran way, way faster. I don't understand.

I also had problems with the mouse, I got one of those fancy Logitech MX500's which has been excellent for all my games but it just seems so shaky and unpredictable here.

I won't even touch the miserable UI...

This is weird, I have a P4 3.0, 1 gig of ram, 9800 pro and the game runs fast BUT the graphics look HORRIBLE. 10 feet away from me it turns into a blocky pixelated piece of crap. Stuff next to me look "okay" not that great.

When you goto picklock a door, look at the doorknob I am sorry but the doorknob looks like a blocky crap for me. I don't know what the hell happened. I put everything on high, AA and AF maxed as well. It looks NOTHING like the screenshots.

Actually the models in game look weird as well. All the textures are god damn grainy or some crap. The combat is pretty gay too, it just feels weird. Nothing like Deus Ex 1 IMO.

I had HIGH HIGH hopes for this game, I almost preordered it and now it has been ruined. Unless they patch this or something this game is off my list. =(

Ok guys, I got a problem and I'de much appreciate it if anyone could help me out.

____

The first time I tried to install, I got as far as the "Install/Unistall DX:IW or Play DX:IW" screen. I naively pressed "Play" thinking that if they gave you the option, maybe the installation was done already. So, it tells me I first need to install, and the installer quits. Ok, next try. This time, I got to like 85% of the installation and then I ran out of disk space. So I uninstall and clean out the registry and try again. But this time, when the very first extraction (the first one after clicking the exe) gets to like 9% it gives me an error:

I/O Error
This is caused by bad install media or your installation file being corrupted.

And this happens every time now. I know the installation file isn't coruppted, since I got a lot further in the install process on a previous attempt. So it can only be that a previous half-install is messing it up. But I did a custom un-install, I looked through the registry, I restarted. The whole deal. But still, it gives me the stupid error.

____

Does anyone know how to solve this? It would really help me out.

After all the stuff Chris said, I'm surprised he thought it was TOO MUCH like an FPS.

I think its NOTHING like an FPS. Its some mish-mash of various and sundry things, a difficult-to-play RPG, sure, but not and FPS.
