T3: War of the Machines MP Beta Demo

The Atari Australia & New Zealand Website (thanks HomeLAN Fed) announces the release of a demo for Terminator 3: War of the Machines, the upcoming shooter based on the science fiction movie (it has since been announced by Atari that this is a beta demo, not representative of the final product - story). Here's the deal: "This epic cinematic conflict, recreated from the phenomenal Terminator® films, places first-person shooter fans at the very center of the uprising. Throughout high-powered multiplayer and single-player missions, combatants fight in apocalyptic landscapes — a decimated downtown Los Angeles, a battered ocean harbor, devastated highways — struggling for survival. Only the strongest will avert catastrophe and save human existence." From Frans: "This is a multiplayer demo that includes a pair of maps called 'Lab-Present' and 'Downtown' playable in the Team Deathmatch, Mission and Termination modes." The 172 MB download is mirrored on 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, Filerush, FileShack (registration required), and Worthplaying.

"BladeRunner had MP? WTF are you talking about n00b"

wtf don`t ya ask before insulting, ya fuck? Bladerunner wasd supposed to be a 1st person pov game, and came out as a freaking point n click 3rd pov game. To me, that IS fucking up a great movie franchise, ya nOOb. rofl

And IMHO, the best done AvP by far, was done by Rebellion for the Jaguar system. A console game that blew minds for its time, and on a cartridge no less, that was more game than both PC versions put together. Both AvPs for PC blew monkies. And... I have been around the community long enough to know wtf I am talking bout in regards to AvP. For kiddies, its an ok game.... but what the AvP community has been asking for, for years BEFORE the PC versions, has always been a simulation of the movie experience, not "quake does Aliens".

Here is to hoping Dave Stalker gives it another go, and actually listens to the communities wants and hopes for AvP 3.

As for this Terminator PC game demo??? With the vid card power we have at the moment, and our cpus pushing 3 gigs, DDR ram up the wazzzoo, and the list goes on, this demo is an insult to those who have been waiting for the game. The visuals for 1 blow. Can you say D A T E D ?

It is because of sheep gamers that devs can get away with delivering this crap. Gamers lower their standards and buy this shit, devs lower their standards in turn and deliver this crap. Personally, I expect better for my dough.

Does anyone know how far from finished this is ?

Seems pretty obvious how far from finished it is. The question is whether they will finish it before they release it

I've played it a bit more now. You are right. Not nearly as serial-goal progression based or as construction based as Wolf-ET. The class system isn't nearly as developed either. I thought that the techs were really needed for something. It is hard to tell from these 2 maps though. If they put in more serious depth in their objectives and iron out some of the kinks I'll buy this though.

My last post was a quick response to all the negative stuff. This game isn't quite as bad as many of the posts make it out to be in my opinion. Especially for a beta.

A few new observations for the beta if any developers are reading this are that the text is hard to read, occasional lag or freezing, and getting stuck firing the wall mounted machine guns every once in a while. It would also be nice to be able to more reliably enter the gunner rather than driver position on an empty vehicle. The downtown map is great but the spawn point for humans needs to be moved a bit from objective that the terminators need to occupy. As it is it sort of forces spawn camping.

Does anyone know how far from finished this is ?

Oh yea! Has anyone played the oldschool 3d shooter Skynet?! That was like one of the first fully 3d FPS' along w/Quake...anyway I have grand memories of playing Skynet as a terminator on the Net..I wish they brought back some of the ideas from that game to this one

Mission mode is more related to BF1942's objective mode than ETs..in ET you build posts/turrets/bridges/etc..and the class and experience/skill system makes ET a pretty varied and deep Campaign mode. T3 is pretty basic as and the premise is kinda "been there, done that". From what I've played of T3 (on servers that don't SUCK!) is fairly enjoyable,as sparse as it is

I have to differ here. There are many kinks to work out but mission mode for this reminds me a little of Wolf ET. Not as good but still quite promising.
My main gripe is that you tend to die after taking a single hit(vs ai bots but not players). Against players it sometimes seems you have to empty quite a bit of ammo.
They borrowed the multiperson vehicle (including gunnery positions) reasonably well from Halo. I also get a kick out of playing terminators. The human tech is sort of a combination of the Wolf ET medic, engineer, and ammo dispensing lt.

They really need some sort of in game readme to tell you what to do though. Even spawning takes a bit of work to figure out (you need to click on a valid spawn point in the profile screen). They also need to fix the repeating keys while typing.
The infiltrator terminators disguised as humans are annoying. They tend to instantly kill anyone who looks at them long enough to tell that they aren't human.

I've only tried the future bombed out downtown map but I think that the look and feel is right on the money.

Event Horizon had to be one of the worst pieces of dreck I've ever had the misfortune to see. It tried to be both horror and sci-fi and it failed miserably at both. The gates of hell are opened from a scientists' faster-than-light-drive...

I just played it and it is far from finished but it does have good potential. It feels like its using the BF1942 engine which can be an excellent thing if you look at DC.

The atmosphere in this T3 game is on the money.

I grew up playing games on a trs-80 with binary graphics

So they were either on or off?

Yes, that's what binary means. Were you trying to be clever?

another great movie franchise that could have been an awesome mp experience, kicked to the curb by yet another Dev who knows not the coolness they are sure to fuck over. It happened to BladeRunner, AvP.... JD by the looks and sounds of it.... The Thing... the list goes on. Even IF the supposed demo was an early test.... they are still gonna blow it

BladeRunner had MP? WTF are you talking about n00b? It was an adventure game and well done at that for its time. AVP are good games for their licenses as well. Your standards must be too high.

Has anybody here seen the first film recently or are they just going on long term memory? Seriously, watch it again! Its like watching a cheesy 80s sci-fi flick if you've never seen it before. All that pop music, big hair, & gargoyle glasses. Brings back memories...

T2 is an epic but T3 is more along the lines of the original film.

Just got T3 in mail today, LoL. Don't know how it is yet though I doubt it or anything left to come out this year (RotK) will be able to beat Kill Bill. That was the wildest and most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. Cheers!

T3 was good. Kill Bill was better (if you like that style of film). Lost in translation is BY FAR the best movie I have seen this year. If Murray doesnt get an oscar nod than the universe will collapse on itself
