Out of the Blue

Wristwatch phone turns your finger into an earpiece (thanks Mike Martinez) is my favorite techie story in a while, as all I can picture now is a guy walking down the street with his finger stuck in his ear while shouting 'Speak up, I can't hear you!!!" Also from the world of science is NightSky: Friday Coming Nov. 8 Second Total Lunar Eclipse of 2003, with word of a second chance for those of us rained out earlier this year. Unfortunately, the forecast is for wet weather around these parts again, but there's still hope, as the weatherman is off base far more often than once in a blue moon, much less a red one. Hey, I wonder why Mitsubishi didn't call the convertible version of their sporty car a Solar Eclipse? And the coupe with a moon roof could be the Lunar Eclipse! Oh well, if it rains maybe I'll find a dealership and ask them these burning questions.

I've seen him twice live. First time was before he went so political. He was a 10 then. Second time was about an 8, still really good but a little too much political commentary for my taste.

He wasn't overly political this time. It was more an issue of him wanting all dumb people in the world to die. I guess someone on the front row was either shouting tips or making requests, and George put a stop to that REAL quick. (Something like, "Hey buddy! You're names not on the sign out front.")

Just as a heads up, I have migrated exclusively to Mozilla Firebird on every machine I use -- and thats more than a few. Not only is it the best browser I have ever touched, it completely eliminates the noisy ads you all are complaining about. I highly suggest you all give it a try.

I found a little utility called 'NoFlash' that gives you a tray icon that you can click on to enable/disable flash in IE. Wooo!

I was OK with the ads and never felt the need to block them but I have to agree with others that the noisy ones need to go. It's a bit jarring while reading the site to be suddenly assaulted with loud gunfire from an obnoxious Flash ad. It was this that prompted me to begin blocking all ads. I don't fault Blue for needing to generate revenue but there are alternatives, many of which have already been brought up here. Note to advertisers: obnoxious, overly-intrusive ads usually have the opposite intended effect. In other words, I won't be buying your product.

I hate moaning Blue but the noisy ads are starting to grate on my nerves. The true crime one has shot at me more times than i'd care to mention.

I know I could run software to stop popups in general, but I really don't mind quiet popups as it's how people make their money off sites.

So I went to that Game Live event.

http://www.gameliveevents.com/pages/761922/index.htm

WHAT UTTER CRAP.

Most the games had been out at least a month. They had freaking DELTA FORCE: BHD FOR @#$*(& SAKE. They only had 8 PCs running Americas Army, DF:BHD and the others werent stable enough to even mention what was running...because it wasnt. Half the console games where EA sports games, I didnt bother with the consoles because I dont own one of those nasty things.

That marketing company sucks some ass.

I got "The XIII Soundtrack". The music is just game music, nothing more. Its well composed and produced but Im all about listening to live music. They have two movies and screenshots of it but not the fucking demo. That probaly says something about the game right there.

They also had discs of Americas Army. Its not 2.0 so I got a new coaster...to throw in the recycling bin.

And last, I got TWO week trials of Dark Age of Camelot, not for the game which I cant stand but for the neat, useful plastic CD cases it comes in. Nice circular clear plastic case.

I ended up going to the arcade to make the trip there worth while.

What happened to those? Games used to be so openly social, now everyone hides behind a console and an IP address.

:\

Also, I had a hottie waitress when I had lunch though, but then those are everywhere here in San Diego.

A while back, someone turned me onto a toolbar for IE that would allow me to enable/disable flash at will. I have since forgotten what it was called. Anyone care to refresh my memory?

I doubt this is what you were talking about but I've just discovered Avant Browser and I'm loving it! It has built-in pop-up blocking as well as the ability to block/allow Flash animations with the press of a button on the toolbar. It also features tabbed browsing utilizing MDI, integrated Google searching, true fullscreen mode, excellent window management, etc. I strongly encourage anyone considering an IE alternative (actually I believe it works in conjunction with IE) to check it out at http://www.avantbrowser.com/

Blue, good to know the emode thing was unintentional. It seemed a bit odd.

Lately I have had two pop-ups appear simultaneously when I first hit the site. It had only been one before (as I would expect). I'll disable the pop-up stopper and ID the ads for the next time I visit.

I am also getting pop-ups each time I click an internal link (such as to view this discussion) but I am assuming that is intentional.

As I said, I'm not complaining or threatening to "boycott" or some such nonsense. I enjoy the site but the ad overload is getting to be a bit much, hence my finally breaking down and using a pop-up stopper. It's fine now, but blocking the ads really defeats the purpose, doesn't it? If the ads were less intrusive, I might actually look at them instead of instinctively trying to shut them down.

Has anyone else noticed the picture that is often shown on the web of the latest matrix that has Neo and Agent Smith about to punch each other. I believe the NYTimes has it on the front of their website right now (it might change per load, but its in the rotation). Anyways, I can't help but notice the way the water is flying off of Neo's fist toward Agent Smith. That would indicate that he is slowing his arm down to pull his punch. Of course we don't expect them to really hit each other, but film makers should remember that if they have a fight scene in the rain, don't catch a pulled punch in motion for an advertising picture. If you want that scene, have the actors pose in position.

Hrmm, it looks like that Game Live tour is coming to the mall right by my house later this season. So is there anything besides the marketing of new games done at this place? Any competitions, etc.? Or is it just, "come check out this just released/soon to be released game" ?
