FireStarter Gold - WinXP/2K Only

GSC Game World sends news that FireStarter, their upcoming first-person shooter, is gold, though no release date for the game is specified. Here's the word, which also explains that the game will only work on two flavors of Windows:
We are glad to inform all the fans of tooth-grinding shooters that our arcade FPS FireStarter has gone gold. The game can be expected to hit the stores very soon. Due to technical peculiarities, the game does not run under OS Windows 95, 98 and ME, while supported only by Windows 2000 and XP.

"Tooth-grinding shooters?" Um, that's not terribly appealing. Makes me think of root canals or cavities or something.

"Tooth-griding" is an improvement on some of the phrases they threw out such as "bed-wetting" shooters, "eye-blinding" shooters, and "impotence-inducing" shooters.

The in-game video I saw a few months ago was horribly ugly. I guess that's why the 'official' trailer they released two days ago had all the gameplay portions stylized with extra filters (solarized, negative, etc.). I guess they just couldn't get this game to look the way they wanted. Or else the publisher forced them to ship it early.
I still want to play it, though.

Demo time.

A bit odd that they couldn't get it to run under win9x. Ah well, if it gives the game an enormous performance boost, I guess I'm alright with it

I've emailed these guys, posted on their forum (I'm about the only regular "community" they have) but they don't seem to give a crap about fostering any type of community around this game. I love fast mindless shooters and this looks right up my alley but I swear they hardly even promote this thing. I like concept art and the person they used for FS is probably one of the best I've seen ( http://www.firestarter-game.com/index.php?t=gallery&s=art&id=4395 ) , so I asked if he had a site where he perhaps sold his works or just had them up for viewing. I don't know what I said that was wrong but I got a very curt reply as if I insulted them and they haven' responded to one of my posts since.

Strange people those GSC...

Wow, looks a lot like Quake 3. I'll bet they put a lot of effort into this too.

Nah, I think they're using the stolen Half-Life 2 source code for their engine.

wow, if that isn't right out of the judge dredd movie.. right down to the exposed spine and dial in the forehead.

after looking at the screenshots on their website, I can see why they obscured all the in-game footage in the trailer.

actually it isn't as simplistic as it looks. They have a rather deep experience system (or so says the description) that lets you customize your character as you move forward in the game. Certain weapons and upgrades become available depending on how you allot your exp. points.

Anyhow, the price is right....$20 at EB

I think the artists name is Anatoly Podorvany.

I haven't been able to find a website, but he has participated in some IGN interviews

Games arent only about graphics. Im not saying this game is any good, cus I have no clue. But the graphics are stylized (not old). Gameplay could kick ass, and thats what matters.

No, the graphics aren't stylized. They're just bad.
It looks like Requiem meets Chasm (you might have to look those two up ;)).
Seriously, anyone who is considering this game should wait for a demo first or at least try to find that slightly older gameplay video.

I've been following the dev of this one for a while, and I'm hopeful its a fairly mindless slaughterfest. It looks a bit Quake 2 in design, but with more of an arcade-style 'kill anything that moves' goal.
I would also like a demo though. If they've made a game that is a lot of fun (albeit with adequate gfx) then it'll have succeeded where many games have failed of late imo.
