America's Army Update Tomorrow

This America's Army Game Intel (thanks Hughey) has word that the promised Windows version 2.0 update for the America's Army shooter is now scheduled for release tomorrow (the Linux version will follow at a later date). The update has info on what will be included in the new version, including new weapons, in game IRC chat, and this on the new character class: "This version introduces a new character class: Special Forces (MOS 18-series). This MOS isn't for the faint at heart, gang. To even be considered for qualification, you need to have a minimum honor of 15 and have successfully completed all Basic Training and Airborne School missions. Next, you'll need to complete the 2 SF training missions: Aircraft, Vehicle, and Weapon Identification (SF AVWID) and Escape and Evasion (SF E&E). Then, and only then, will you qualify to participate as a Special Forces Soldier in our 4 new multiplayer maps: SF Combat Search and Rescue, SF Recon, SF Hospital, and Pipeline SF."

Yeah what you just said is exactly why this game is great.

If you were (in real life) engaging enemy you wouldn't be running (or bunny-hopping) in to battle. And yeah, you get ONE LIFE. Don't get killed.

AAO = simulation. CS/COD/MOHAA = arcade.

i got tired of having to do the training missions and such, it was annoying.

I didnt need that crap for Raven Shield and I didnt need it here.

Also the game consisted mostly of people sitting behind a crate and firing from far off, and never moving. really boring.

plus when you die, you got a long boring wait before you play again.

pass

It would be nice if the Army would spend money on improved body armor for our troops instead of wasting it on a free video game...
The money for this game comes from their normal advertising budget.

Would you rather see another "Army of One" commercial, or get to play a rather good, free, video game?

I haven't played in a year or so.

Have they turned down the nade damage radius? I hope they did. Because it was a problem before. You could wipe out a teammate easy inside the buildings. Even if they were far away from the blast.

Have they added a little team indicator or anything? Like Raven Shield so you can get a rough estimate of your teams location?

One of our clan mates has turned us all on to this update so I imagine I will give this one another look. I loved it before...

If the realism is still high I will love it. Once you play a game with so much realism you can't go back to games like Quake 3 where it takes three rockets to kill.

It was even worse when the highest ranks can only be gained by the highest honor which meant retards sat in the back of the plane whilest you got them even more honor....

another class only gained by people who mostly exploit. What a shame.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I'm glad you can't turn off friendly fire. I'm biast of course, but I think any realistic shooter (especially ones with grenades) should ALWAYS have FF

Aye, this game is definitely one of the most overlooked and underhyped gems of the modern tactical shooter community. I too quit playing it due to the massive cheating, and vowed I wouldn't be back until there was some substantial new content. This looks to be it, and I'll be happy to give it another shot tomorrow.

This is my fav tactical FPS and will remain to be for one reason...sheer amount of accurate and realistic detail. This game rewards teamwork and very formulaic approaches to defending the objective or capturing it..this means no running like a madman sniping people in midair a la CS Camping is an effective and accepted strategy in this game which is pretty different from most games...relying on sound (player footsteps making different sounds for each different surface they're walkin on) to detect and hunt down your enemy is awesome! Once you get the jist of this game the FUNFACTOR multiplies by 10 at least..as it is very satisfying to down 5 enemy in one round using stealth or aggressive supression fire...oh ya nades are a bitch too! =\
Anyway my 2 cents of the game and I can't wait for further updates (karma physics

They got PunkBuster in 1.9 which helped a LOT. This is the only game that can hold my attention these days. I agree that if you haven't given this game a fair shot, you should. Looking forward to Special Forces...

I played 1.7 for a few months. but all servers were overflowing with cheaters, much worse than CS. is it still that bad?

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

I'm not exactly sure how you get honor still.
The short version: Honor is gained by gaining points (completing objectives, scoring enemy kills, surviving rounds, etc.). There's a table somewhere that lists all the Honor requirements, but at the very beginning it's something like 500 points for 1 point of Honor until 15, and then it jumps to 1000 points and so on. So it really rewards those who memorize maps and play for umpteen million hours a day. Which is the main reason I stopped playing. I always found myself on the servers full of smacktards who loved running over my grenades (well after they had been thrown mind you, a nice -140 points to ROE), so I dropped to 8 Honor, and I never got good enough to offset the penalties I was getting.

Ahhh well, I could just make a new account and start all over with 2.0.

It's a great game and I love it, I just wish I had broadband so I could actually enjoy online play. In any case, it's nice to see them supporting it so well. People call it propaganda, whatever, it kicks ass anyway.

Well, the graphical improvements from 1.7 to 1.9 were very impressive. The ones for 2.0 are going to be a big leap yet again. The #1 reason why more people don't play it though, is that you can't turn off friendly fire, no matter what. Having the honor requirement though is going to go a long way in keeping the good players coming back.

I'm not exactly sure how you get honor still. I played this game pretty hard core for 2 weeks during the summer but never got past 10 (and no i didn't TK a ton, the whole time i had like, 4 friendly fire incidents total). It got kind of frustrating being auto matically passed up for any of the weapons i wanted to use (though i got pretty fond of the standard M16 so that worked out good).

I always liked AA, but it seems like I play it a lot for a couple weeks and it gets lost in the shuffle again. The Unreal engine sucks ass but you can't beat the price tag.
