If it weren't a Quake game, Quake 3 would've been just another mediocre FPS. It wasn't anywhere near as good as UT. Id has most certainly not been years ahead of the competition in all regards. Technologically, yes, but then again they have probably the best graphics engine designer ever in John Carmack. It's expected. But are the graphics really that much better? The texture-shading isn't anything spectacular, even if it is inventive. It's got the same lighting and physics effects that all the other new games have HL2, DX2, etc. The only reason why it might look better is that you have much smaller scenes in D3, not like the wide open landscapes in HL2. But I'm not on anyone's bandwagon. I think Epic's latest suck, UT2004 is what 2003 was promised to be. Valve is screwing up everything in the last three months, so who knows how great HL2 will be. DX2 doesn't look nearly as interesting as DX was, it actually looks rather bland. And D3, while I hope for it to be great, probably won't be more than around 10 hours long, and doesn't even have a great storyline to carry it. I would have been just as happy if they had only technologically updated the original Doom, so I could play Knee Deep in the Dead with DX9 graphics. I guess I'll have to wait for a mod for that one.

C'mon already will everyone jump off the "Valve bandwagon" already?!!? Honestly how can you support a developer idiotic enough to think that Steam is actually a step forward as far as getting game content out there to the masses? A developer as naive to think that it doesn't need security on one of the most anticipated titles ever! Its beyond me...Steam is a pile of Steamy crap I know Half-Life 2 will be an awesome experience but it will pare in comparison to Doom III,w/out a doubt in my mind. Id created the genre, w/out them the whole damn concept and intricacies of FPS would be lagging behind by at least a few years. Id is years ahead of the competition and Doom III will be a testament to that.

Dammit, NE1 know/guess when this game will be released? Just bought a whole new system just so I could play this and HL2, and neither is going to be released this Christmas! Ahh crap.

By the time either of these two games are released, Radeon 15000 and Geforce 8000 will be the latest cards on the market

I really don't get the point of whole D3 vs. HL2 debate. You know you can purchase BOTH these games for under $100. When everyone is talking about dropping $400-$500 for the latest hi-zoot graphics card, they suddenly can't afford to spend another $50 for a second game ?

This whole HL2 vs. D3 debate is getting old ...

You cannot make anything fool-proof. The fools are too inventive

LMAO - Nice thread...
Count me in the "Old Fart" group. Wolf 3d, Doom, Doom 2, Quake 1, 2 & 3. Some short diversions with that POS Duke Nukem and Half(asslife. No one does FPS like id. id invented FPS and multiplayer games. (anyone remember DWANGO?) I owe my entire career to the fact that I wanted a computer to play Wolf 3d. Now I make a good living with my computer skills.

I'll buy a new PC if need be just to play Doom3 when it comes out. And just like Zephalephelah, I'll wait 'til the wife and kids are asleep to play.

Also BTW, your pathetic need to brag over your equipment is a needless waste of space. Not to mention that it ain't all that good of stuff anyway you fucking bitch ass punk.

I say this because you have shown your ignorance, you have attempted to insult and failed, and you think people care if you have an "okay" system.

Go take a big gulp of Steam urine gel & STFU!

I'm 39 years of age and will play video games until the day I die (the way I drink, probably some time this weekend). Radio, Movies and Television have all been accused of corrupting youth, and been embraced by youth in turn because of this. Curiously Radio, Movies and Television actually revolve about a much older audience. Video games are around 40 years old. You might want to re-examine your opinions. Something along the lines of..."You are old, and therefore are the preferred demographic for this game because (a) you pay for it and (b) won't DOS our servers into oblivion if you lose a DM. You may suck but you paid for the development. Cheers. Big hug. ... something like that.

The last survey I looked at put the average age of a PC gamer at 29. That means I'm above average.

<edit> I can spell development but I was confused by some knee ointment...

Buying both. Obviously. Who won't be able to buy both within, say, three months of each other tops? Even if they were released on the same day. In the UK both games will likely carry a 15 age certificate. If you're 15 you've probably got some type of part time job anyway. 15 is virtually an adult anyway so even if you don't have a job you're looking for one and too busy to be playing video games.
Personally I parted company with id with Quake 3. Unreal Tournament came out slightly sooner and I bought it and never looked back. OTOH I broke up with 2 girlfriends over Doom and Quake (re-read that and had to qualify. I didn't have 2 girlfriends at once on both occasions. Anytime I had two girlfriends I wasn't playing games. Duh.) Wolfenstein was the game I introduced my nephew to video games with. "Don't hurt da doogs" he would weep. Pitiful 5 year old wimp.

You are forgetting the newer market. Gamers that played Doom 10 years ago are old farts now. New gamers that are turning 16 years old today are the new market.

We are old, get over it.

When we are 90, and a new game comes out, we'll say "Bah! I played the same game 70 years ago! This is the same thing but with more eye-candy!!!" Mean while, it is the #1 selling game on both Earth AND Mars and brought in over 100 trillion US dollars in the first week.

Get over it.. You are OLD.

Does this mean the AYB boom is officially over?

Exactly I'll buy both too.

At least there is one innovation in Doom3 that everyone will talk about. There is no USE key:
The Crosshair changes when you face and point an object that you can interact with, so you are never distracted. Just click the mouse and keep focused on the important movement keys.
I think everyone will like this new, yet simple - but someone had to think about it - new feature.

All of you that think Doom 3 is going to be a sucky rehash of a 10 year old game, you have the right NOT to buy it!

Personally I'll have both Doom 3 and HL2. I don't rely on mommy and daddy to buy my games, so I'll just get both of them.
