New ATI CATALYST Drivers

The ATI Drivers & Software Page (thanks Ant) now offers downloads of new version 3.9 CATALYST reference drivers for ATI accelerators. The release notes have the details on what's new or changed.

It kind of makes sense. In a cruel sort of pessimistic way. Obviously this guy has never tried really hard to optimize code himself. Given a certain amount of time and resources, you do the best you can. Given additional time and/or resources, it is possible to make improvements. I certainly wouldn't view it as "performance being robbed from you before the drivers come out" unless the drivers when you get the card are substandard compared to their peers... or if the company uses the drivers to deliberately hold back on performance, which is unlikely given the current state of competition.

Gamers need to learn to give these driver writers a little bit of a break. It's got to be one of the most difficult programming tasks there is, in a constantly changing environment, and the measurement of their success is heavily dependent upon decisions made by programmers at other companies (the game developers.) I'm not saying the drivers don't have to be good, they do, but expecting perfection on day 1 (in terms of performance) is unreasonable. If anything, they should be compromising for stability and compatibility at first, and then carefully working on performance optimizations.
