I don't disagree about the usability, but it shouldn't have to look like shit in order to have that. It looked like you were playing with an internal alpha version of the UI.
I can't really be a HW2 noob any more. I stopped playing. I thoroughly enjoyed and played the original through, but when I used my marine frigates against enemy carriers, and the takeover simply failed without saying anything after they'd sat next to them for ages and the takeover bar had reached full, I stopped playing in disgust.
I'm sure someone somewhere came up with a commandment for game design that said something like "Thou shalt not give something a game mechanic, then stop it from working without explanation to the player simply for thou convenience."
There's even plenty of good ideas in the game, like the subsystems, but it doesn't hang together as a fun game for me. It's also caught between a rock and a hard place, because Generals: Zero Hour is incredibly good fun and has more personality, and Total War is more cerebral.
