Ships Ahoy III - Chrome

As the Joker said in Batman: "Ship 'em out a whole new door!" That's right, more shipping news comes way of this press release, that announces the North American availability of Chrome, Techland's science fiction-themed first-person shooter. Here's a bit:
“Chrome is a thinking man’s shooter,” says Steve Milburn, Director of Marketing at Strategy First. “In the same vein of games like System Shock and Deus Ex, players must choose their weapons and ammo carefully, use implants to improve their performance and know when to come in with guns blazing or sneak in undetected. It can mean the difference between life and death!”
In still further shipping news: "Got Game Entertainment today announced that 'Conspiracies', a game of murder, mystery, and adventure for the PC began shipping to retail this week. Uniquely packaged with both the DVD version and CD version in one box, 'Conspiracies' is already garnering excellent reviews, international awards, and it arrives in stores just in time for holiday shopping."

I guess I got them turned around then (CD speed vs DVD speed), never really paid any attention to it. Thanks for the explanation Eric.

I still think it's weird to package both of them together, however.

I figured that was what you were talking about. The max read speed on DVD drives currently has a lower number than the max read on CDROMS (x16 to CDs x52), but that number is deceptive. The definition of single speed isn't the same for a DVD as it is for a CD. Single speed DVD drives read data at 1,350KBs, while single speed CD drives only read at 150KBs. Doing the math, our x16 speed DVD drive has a max read speed of 21,600KBx, while our x52 speed CDROM has a max read speed of only 7,800KBs. So, our "slow" DVD drive can potentially read data at nearly 3 times the rate of our "fast" CD drive. While both drives spin the disk at the same speed (spin it any faster and your CDs have a habit of exploding), the DVD reads faster because the density of information on the disk is higher. So more data is seen by the laser for every rotation than on the CDROM. Of course, read speed is really beside the point since the game probably doesn't even use the disk for anything but copy protection after it's installed.

Good God, how dare he compare it with System Shock and Deus EX.

Well, comparing it to Daikatana or Battlecruiser Millenium would not be a very smart marketing move... I mean, this is Steve Milburn, Director of Marketing at Strategy First! He's a member of MENSA, holds 5 PhD's and can speak 49 languages! You need a high IQ and keen powers of observation to create clever catch phrases and press releases!

lmao!
Nice piece of history too

Quite the claim indeed. But then I gots ta thinkin', how do I feel when I've worked long and hard on a project that I'm proud of. I feel pretty good about my work. Maybe that's what's going on here?

....then I thought; nah.......

I passed on Halo PC. Tried it on my cousins Xbox last Christmas, it was ok. I'll probably pass on this, unless a demo changes my mind. But then, I d/l less demos these days because they're so big, and compared to a few years ago, so short. How ironic is that?

Still, there are some very promising titles in the works, so all is not lost

I thought DVD players read slower than CD-ROMs did, something like 32x as opposed to 52x? Not sure about the numbers, but I'm pretty sure that DVDs just read slower?

unless the game comes on only one CD to begin with, in which case you'd be stupid to get the slower DVD version

Why would the DVD version be any slower than the CD one?

I've already wasted enough bytes on Chrome, but that "unique packaging" thing baffles me. I can see absolutely NO benefit in having both the DVD and CD version in one box.

If you have a DVD, you'd get a DVD version if it was available (unless the game comes on only one CD to begin with, in which case you'd be stupid to get the slower DVD version), and if you don't have a DVD, you'd get the CD version.

Two boxes would be fine, just stamp DVD version on one et voila.

Because, in order to stop people from buying one copy of the game, and getting to play it on two computers, you KNOW they've gone into Satan's arsehole and Beyond to get the most inane protection scheme imaginable to man.

I just don't get it...

well when they are compairing it to dues ex and system shock in their marketing I think its safe to compair it to those titles. It's leaps and bounds below them on virutally every concevable scale. Bargin bin title. Yes. Next deus ex? No.

Its not a bad game, its only crime is that it isn't a great game. these fanboy snobs just can't seem to look past their wet dreams of HL2 to see it.

no game is fucking perfect so give it a rest.

this is a solid bargain bin purchase in a year

I kinda liked the demo. It is no System Shock or Deus Ex but it was pretty cool. Reminds of a little of the marine campaign in Alien vs. Preditor w/ a little more upgrades. Nice graphics, ok sound, ok gameply. Something different, I do want to try the full game.
