Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

As recent hints indicated (story), Gaming's Original Ladies' Man and Lovable Loser Goes to College in 'Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum Laude' is the press release announcing that Leisure Suit Larry, the venerable gaming letch, has taken his polyester togs out of storage, and is prepared to hit the scene once more. The announcement is accompanied by the first three screenshots available on the newly opened product page, along with a movie trailer in several sizes. As has been noted, the game, will not involve series originator Al Lowe. Here's a bit:
Vivendi Universal Games announced today that the next installment in the best-selling "Leisure Suit Larry"(TM) franchise, "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude" is scheduled for release on next-generation consoles and the PC in late 2004.
...
"Inspired by films like 'American Pie' and 'There's Something About Mary,' the game is packed full of outrageous humor and raucous game-play," said Philip O'Neil, SVP Sales & Marketing, Vivendi Universal Games. "We have captured the distinctive style and feel of the original series, while taking the humor and visuals to a level that hasn't been seen before. With all these ingredients combined we are sure it will please old and new fans alike."

For the thousands of you who have written and expressed support of me becoming involved with the new game, I have news: you're efforts are being heard. I have been in contact with Sierra many times over the past week and, while nothing is finalized yet, today Sierra's legal department said I could release the following (grammatically challenged) message:

"Currently, I am in the process of negotiations with Vivendi Universal Games and my involvement with the next installment of the Leisure Suit Larry. Once we have reached an agreement I will be able to comment more on my involvement."

I'll leave it to the message boards to discuss the full meaning and ramifications of this.

Hey Tom - get YOUR facts straight. I said the Larry character was the sole creation of Al Lowe - not that he wasnt influenced by previous games. He was inspired by it - it was not based on that game any more than Space Balls is based on Star Wars. Here is a quote from Al -

"Since I hadn't played the game [Softporn] in years, I said I’d have to take a copy home and play it before deciding.

Wow. Was it out of date! Its goal was to score three women during one night in Las Vegas. It had no protagonist, little or no plot, almost no text, understood almost no input. So I reported back to Ken: there’s no way I could bring this game into the 80’s unless he let me make fun of that life style. I said, "it’s so behind the times it might as well be wearing a leisure suit!" Everyone laughed. Hey, wait a minute....

Thus was born Leisure Suit Larry"

Ah, that's right. That was his name, wasn't it. Man, memories of playing that game on my old 286 pc with a 'shades of grey' monitor. I never saw it in full color. Very cool game.

Larry was a middle aged guy in a leisure suit, no he looks all hip and sh!t. I was a big fan of these games back in the day, but you can tell they're just trying to milk it.

And why is it going to be on consoles? Everyone that played it, played it on a PC. stupid

I haven't bought it yet it since it's still not out but the demo is more than enough to get an idea about how bad it will be... same for creed which is also not out yet.

This year too many bad games came out which at first seemed to be great fun but than after playing turned out to be complete failures: U2, NWO, Devastation, Breed, Chreed and Chrome just to name a few.

Blech, those screen shots are terrible, and that model looks nothing like Larry (though I'd admit Larry looked nothing like Larry from game to game). Still, the screenshots are awful.

Monkey Island owns all.

And, quick survey - name the entertaining adventure games, Sierra style, designed for consoles (as opposed to ported over). Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? That right there is a death nail. Console adventure games are much more vapid than PC ones. Typically games with "porn" elements are as well.

This game is doomed to sucking.

I have a certain fondness for Larry, but I feel no real excitement from the three screenshots and one movie that I saw. I will give the demo a whirl, that is for sure, but it definitely seems to have lost its magic.

Shrugging,
Ray

1) What does LLL stand for? It's LL or LSL or LLLLL but not LLL.

2) Go to Al Lowe's web site, and watch the video interview he links to of when he was on The Screen Savers. See what he says about the origins of Leisure Suit Larry! It's directly based on Softporn, which was published by Sierra long before Al came on board.

Ya, he was a great guy n' all, and he did a great job w/ LSL, but get your facts straight.

there is no love because Al Lowe IS Larry... he is Al's personality personified into a video game character...

Its one thing to lose a vital contributor to the series, but AL ORIGINATED the Larry series in much more of a total scope than Ken and Roberta Williams originated Kings Quest. They had plenty of fantasy literature to draw on, but Al was WAY out there on the edge.

That edge is what defines the LLL experience - and yes its full of bathroom humor... but the execution, chico... the execution never lies!!!

Plus, it was VERY much an 80s type of "sex humor"... think about it: that was only a decade after leisure suits were widely worn all over the globe... now its 30 years after!!! The relevance of the LLL phenomena is ENTIRELY in the hands of its true originator, Al Lowe. "American Pie" and "Something About Mary" HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! They might be slightly similar on a very superficial level - and if that is their basis for the game, the content will reflect it.

I thought you guys would be jumping up and down about a new Larry game. I guess I can understand cynicism, but thought there would be more happiness than this.

I will be jumping up and down once this game is out and ends up being fun but not before. This year too many bad games came out which at first seemed to be great fun but than after playing turned out to be complete failures: U2, NWO, Devastation, Breed, Chreed and Chrome just to name a few.

Gamers are much more down to earth with their expectations than just a few years ago... maybe this explains the lack of enthousiasm for MCL, especially since it's a sequel and sequels generally do have a bad reputation

Anyway, glad to here that you are in discussion with AL. Not saying that he has the best humour but his sense for it is unreplaceable for the LSL series...

Given that it's a console game, most consumers won't know Al Lowe and won't care. I'm not sure he's the only one who could ever pull of comedy in a game. Nevertheless, I agree he'd be an asset to the project. That's why we're in discussion with him right now.

Those too young to know Al (IE some console gamers) won't know who Larry is either. And those old enough to remember the games are pissed Al isn't involved (yet). By Al's account, your company (Sierra), told him to pack his bags one day out of the blue, after he worked on one of the most memorable series in PC gaming.

As for why people aren't jumping up and down about this news....... I think it's because people are generally getting wiser (or maybe just more cynical) about companies just taking an old franchise and trying to make money more off the name recognition than trying to do a good game. Frankly I'm somewhat excited about this if only because it's another new adventure game, and I love that genre......... but until I know more about what this game will be, I can't get that excited about it. It would be the same thing with a new Space Quest game.... on one level, I'd be excited just if it was new Space Quest game at all, but I'd want to have a sense it would be a good game in its own right, not just coasting on nostalgia. Frankly, even if you do get the original creators involved, it's not always a guarantee of anything.
