No DX: Invisible War SDK

A post to The ION Storm Forums indicates that there is not going to be a release of a Deus Ex: Invisible War SDK for mod authors (thanks DeusExZone) when the upcoming FPS/RPG sequel is released. Here's the deal:
there are currently no plans to release the SDK. it would take a long time to get them in a stable, usable state for release, and right now we're already switching the company's focus to shipping thief 3.

Its not the lenght of the game that counts, its the depth.

This isn't the type of game that lends itself to modding, so this is no real loss.

Rather than fracture the modding community over numerous different platforms, we'll hopefully just have them concentrated for Doom, Half Life and Unreal. It'll give us a higher quality mods to choose from.

Deus Ex had a SDK and while I am not knocking the mods that did came out for it. There just wasn't that many.

I think Deus Ex 2 will be the same. If it has no multiplayer ( like the first was to start with ) then there's not alot of motivation to make much for it.

People would be better off cloning the better gameplay aspects from Deus EX:IW and putting it into Ut2k3 or Half-life.

Well, everyone knows that mods don't make a game more attractive to gamers. That's just a known fact. Good job ION Storm!

Little touchy today aren't we Rajajuju? If you thought DX was "a short, VERY short game", I'm curious to hear what you thought of, say, Max Payne.

No big deal for Deus Ex 2 Oct 27, 2003, 15:47

Like someone said earlier, there were only a tiny handful of mods for Deus Ex the first and most of them weren't any good anyway.

BUT if this will be the case with Thief 3 there will be blood in the streets. That game has a HUGE SP mod community and not releasing an SDK will be a betrayal of the worst kind. Hell, if Looking Glass released Dromed and ShockEd, neither of which can be considered stable by any stretch of the imagination, I'm sure modders would find a way to work with the Thief 3. In fact they only released ShockEd a little while ago and they said something liek "Here it is. It's not useable but if you can make it work it's yours." And guess what? That's just what they did!

On edit: Can't pass this opportunity to comment again on just who their target audience seems to be once more. Who is it that can't play mods again? Which platforms? Somebody remind me.

not 12 hours a day, jack-ass... maybe I finished it in 5 or so days, but it was still a short, VERY short game - it took less than a week and thats too short.. and I was working alot of overtime hours during that month, so fuck your all day theory

15 hours is still substantially longer than any recent shooter. You really must have just rushed through the game if it took you 15 the first time through. I believe the time stamp for my last save was around 30 hours. In subsequent replays I have finished in under twenty but even still. Anyway the point is that DX was hardly a short game, maybe in comparison to Morrowind but in comparison to any other game it was of above average length.

yeh, I never replayed it - and the fact it was designed to be replayable may account for the shortness of 1 time through

it was a cool game, but I dont think all this fanboy worship is necessarily justified for me

I was hoping that they'd release an SDK because the first one was great fun to create mods for, but alas...

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22
Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?

I heard DX2 will be shorter than the original... how is that any good?? I finished the first one in like 3 days
3 days is 72 hours. Seems about right.

short, VERY short game
Deus Ex was the perfect length. Not too long, not too short. Plus, I've played through quite a few times, and each time I find something new. The only other game that I can think of that has this perfect length and great replayability are Fallout 1 and 2.

Speaking of Fallout, I want Fallout 3!

Fantastic.
Now maybe the DX1 mod authors will have one less excuse to actually finish making a decent DX1 mod.

I beat Deus Ex in 25-30 hours(thats alot longer then most FPS), trying to get everything in the game, I've replayed it twice and found new stuff I didn't see before.

DX2's length is hard to determine, according to one of the developers, DX2 will have much more content, DX1 had 10,000 lines of text, DX2 has 30,000+. So it may be possible to beat it quicker then DX, but it has more packed in.

if this one is shorter I guarantee you will hear about it in the reviews

Gog,

I don't think Helmet was over-praising DX or Specter, only questioning the validity of Rajajuju's statement that he finished DX in 3 days. DX was a particularly long game and I myself thought Rajajuju's estimate odd. It seems fair to me to ask Rajajuju if his experience with DX was affected by the speed with which he finished the game.

Hey Helmet, how about you hop off of Specter's dick and then give an unbiased opinion. Who the hell made you their PR man? The fact that you have all their previews and Q/A sessions memorized doesn't count for shit, Von Helmet the DX PR man, pphtt...

That's just a general summary of what I've read that they've said. Why not believe it? They are a house that can actually deliver that kind of thing. DX surprised a lot of people so I for one am prepared to believe they can do it again.

Anyway, its a shame they aren't going to be releasing a SDK, mods and such have always been an integral part to any recent classic.

DX was a "recent classic" and I doubt you can name one mod for that game off the top of your head. I can think of one.

Would you be arguing with me if I was Ray Marden? I hear he's kinda looking forward to this game too...

If you finished the first one in three days you must have been playing for about 12 hours a day. In that case, get a life, mmmkay? Either that or you seriously rushed it and missed out on all the cool stuff.

This one will be shorter, but broader. Less linear. More to do.

A shame, a huge - huge shame. The Unreal engine has extensive mod possibilities to it. This is a huge disappointment that there won't even be a level editor. It's still on my probably buy list, but it's really a loss for the title.

XIII might turn into a better package than DX2. Dang, didn't see that coming.
